What is Worth Choosing
For the discerning New York diner, 爱家茶餐厅 Hometown Cafe is worth choosing primarily for its unparalleled variety of Hong Kong-style comfort food and its excellent location. In a city where specialty dining is the norm, finding a single restaurant that offers Clay Pot Rice, Beef Chow Fun, Baked Sole Fillet, and a Ham Macaroni Soup combo all under one roof is a significant draw. The extensive menu is not just a feature; it is the reason to visit. Whether you are in the mood for a traditional noodle soup, a filling rice plate, or a uniquely Hong Kong-style baked dish, the cafe has an option ready.
Furthermore, the value proposition—where one customer noted the "price and portion are good"—makes it an attractive option for regular dining in a high-cost area like New York City. While some specific dishes have received constructive criticism, particularly concerning preparation consistency in new oil usage and execution of certain fried items, the overall sentiment encourages return visits, with one diner stating, "I might come back to try something else." This suggests a promising foundation and an expectation of improvement, which is common for new or newly managed restaurants. The positive remarks about the service from staff like Giu also reinforce the potential for a genuinely friendly and welcoming local experience.
Choosing Hometown Cafe is a choice for accessible, high-variety, and culturally specific comfort food in the heart of Brooklyn. It stands as a vital local resource for those who cherish the distinct flavors and unique menu items of a true Cha Chaan Teng. New Yorkers looking for a reliable, well-priced spot with an enormous selection of familiar and adventurous Cantonese and Hong Kong-style dishes should put 爱家茶餐厅 Hometown Cafe on their must-try list.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Trying something new in the neighborhood who took over the old spot, kept the same design and tables and chairs, chairs are anti-ergonomic, very uncomfortable to sit on.The server is friendly but not attentive, brought a half cup of cup, though a bigger cup than usual, after delivering the food to the table, never come by to check on us or refill water that I placed on the edge, the chart and walk around but did not notice that. Most importantly, food. The price and portion are good, BUT, the fried calamari was fried in old oil because the batter is very dark, and super over cooked. Calamari itself was fresh but very hard and chewy. The tentacles were aide “air-dried” texture, what a waste. Sweet and sour pork rice dish was a disaster, very thick breading and super fatty, it was not edible. They do not look or taste fresh, as if they came in those precooked package and basically just heated them up, avoid this dish at all cost. The whole sweet and sour pork were left on the plate. The rice was very dry and hard too which was very disappointing. The black pepper steak entree was ok, but very oily, see picture with the oil on the plate. Usually restaurants will fry the steak and veggies first prior to stir fried the food, they didn’t do a good job draining the oil so it felt very heavy, I had to elevate one side of the plate to get as much oil off the food as possible.Overall, I might come back to try something else that can be prepared light, but not anytime soon. I do hope they will improve and prosper, need to work on areas that they can def improve.
July 08 · Wien LooThe first impression here was good, it's a nice comfortable spot. Food is not bad, they are still adjusting, server lady Giu was very nice and great service. She was very helpful. Enjoy the seating, the middle row of the seating makes it a bit cramped, but still well set up. Very clean location, definitely recommend a try for this place. Decent pricing.
July 15 · Eric ChanFood was average, but our wait time took quite awhile about 20 mins for our first dish which is the French toast to come out, which I think is quite long considering there was only one other table. In terms of how it tastes, i don’t think it was that good, other stores around the area make it better. The chicken corn soup barely had any chicken and corn and has close to zero flavor. We also ordered French toast The noodles and rice dishes were average, nothing bad.
July 27 · Sabrina ZhangThe food was overall not too salty and portion sizes are good! We ate a few dishes including the wonton noodle, shrimp with eggs, clay pot rice with spare ribs, and a veggie. All was pretty good and tasted home cooked.
June 19 · Christine 1The food here was delicious! We got the Wet-Fried Beef Ho Fun, Green Bean Minced Meat Stir-Fry, and the Claypot Rice w/ Pork Spareribs.Portion sizes were very generous, at a very affordable price!Food was delicious, especially the claypot rice! Honestly think it was as good as King’s Kitchen! Our server was also very friendly and attentive. Overall, no complaints, definitely think this new spot is worth giving it a shot!
