Choosing Joe's Ginger is about embracing the authentic, no-frills experience of a classic Chinatown restaurant. The main reason to come here is undoubtedly the **soup dumplings**. While some reviews may vary on other dishes, the praise for the soup dumplings is consistent and widespread. They are a local specialty and a perfect example of what the restaurant does best. Their affordability is also a major draw; as a customer noted, a delicious meal can be had for a very reasonable price, which is a significant advantage in an expensive city like New York.
The extensive and diverse menu is another reason to choose Joe's Ginger. Beyond the dumplings, you can explore traditional dishes that might not be available at more Americanized Chinese restaurants. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty beef dish, some comforting congee, or a refreshing cold appetizer, the menu has something to satisfy your craving. The fast and efficient service, while possibly perceived as "distant," is a hallmark of many authentic establishments and is simply about getting your food to you quickly so you can enjoy it. This focus on efficiency makes it a perfect spot for a quick bite or a speedy dinner.
While some recent reviews have expressed concerns about changes in food quality and price, the long-standing reputation and a loyal customer base who continue to praise the delicious food speak volumes. The restaurant's ability to cater to a variety of crowds, from groups to solo diners, and to offer convenient services like delivery and takeout makes it a flexible and reliable choice. For a true taste of Chinatown and a chance to try some of the most talked-about soup dumplings in the city, Joe's Ginger remains a must-visit spot.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’m not sure why everyone gives this place such a bad rating. The food is great. The soup dumplings are truly delicious. It is NOT expensive compared to other restaurants, but might be considered pricey for Chinatown. But I don’t think $5-$12 for a meal is pricey. I don’t find the service to be rude. It’s very distant, which is customary in most places outside of the states. They don’t coddle you, they just take your order and bring you food. Nothing wrong with that. There’s an ATM upstairs if you forget cash. Literally a delicious, must stop spot in Chinatown. This is my second visit and I’m just as satisfied.
September 10 · Amanda MossVery frustrating as this place used to be great and now the food is super expensive and it doesn’t even taste good! I’d been okay if the food is decent but it’s not.The scallion pancake is dry and flakey. The soup dumplings have a weird taste. The dumplings are small and it’s not like the ones you’d seen at a proper dim sum restaurant.Portion is bad and the taste is off. I really don’t want to be critical to local business but this place needs a complete rethink of their model otherwise it’ll wash up on the shore of closed businessReally hoping for this place to come back!
April 15 · Tien FThe food was great, dumplings were amazing, however the service was terrible. The people working here were so rude to us, me in particular. I had given the exact amount to pay on the receipt, because I always leave the tip on the table. I’m from Ohio, so I’m not sure if that’s uncommon in NY or not. They refused to take the bill because I didn’t leave a tip yet. I had also questioned the bill three times because it didn’t seem accurate and each time was ignored. They refused to take the bill again when I got frustrated trying to get answers about the pricing because I still didn’t put a tip. In my opinion a tip wasn’t deserved because of the service. I left one to be nice anyway, but if I could do it all over again I would have left the money to pay the bill on the table and not have tipped at all.
April 08 · Lauren Miller-MazzantSoup dumplings are good, I’ve been here 4 times, each time I come the service gets worse. This will be my last time, not worth it. So sad though, they use to be so different. Worst service in NY.
June 24 · Sara FigueroaWalked in on a Saturday afternoon, clearly a reason why the place was empty and we were seated right away. Nothing special at all about the food, small portions and very expensive. Would also like to point out cash only and similar to other reviews waiter waiting beside as you pay the bill saying gratuity not included. Avoid this restaurant at all costs! There are much better Chinese restaurants in NYC.
