Keens Steakhouse Introduce
In the bustling landscape of Midtown Manhattan, where modernity often overshadows history, Keens Steakhouse stands as a timeless monument to New York City's rich past. Established in 1885, this legendary chophouse is more than just a place to eat; it is an experience, a journey back to the Gilded Age when the Herald Square Theatre District thrived and luminaries of the time gathered for great food and even better company. Keens is not just a restaurant; it’s a living museum, famous for its unparalleled collection of over 90,000 clay smoking pipes adorning the ceiling, a tradition with roots dating back to the 17th century. This unique feature, along with the wood-paneled walls and a cozy, romantic ambiance, makes it a must-visit destination. While its prime steaks are celebrated, it is the legendary Mutton Chop that has truly cemented its place in culinary history. For those seeking an upscale, historic, and unforgettable dining experience, Keens Steakhouse offers a perfect blend of tradition, elegance, and exceptional cuisine.
The atmosphere at Keens is one of its most compelling features. It is a harmonious blend of cozy, historic, romantic, and upscale. The appetizers, such as the Thick-Cut Smoked Bacon and Crisp Calamari Salad, are considered perfect starters, and the desserts, like the Carrot Cake, are called outstanding. While some may find certain sides or salads to be average, the main attractions—the legendary meats and historic ambiance—more than make up for it. The a la carte pricing is on par with other high-end steakhouses in the city, but the value is in the entire package: the impeccable service, the unique atmosphere, the rich history, and the quality of the food. It’s an ideal spot for a special occasion, a romantic date, or simply a bucket-list meal for any meat lover. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Came here on a referral from a top Long Island steakhouse owner. The host greeted us warmly and accommodated our request to sit a half hour sooner than our reservation. Great table in the back in the pipe room. History of the place adds to the ambience. Lively atmosphere but not loud. Brenna and her team gave us great service and helped us celebrate my son's birthday. The filet mignon was cooked to order and tender. Same with porter house. Portions were generous. The Caesar salad was just okay. Same with the broccoli/cauliflower. Carrot cake is outstanding! Prices are on par with good steak houses.
August 16 · Pam KilloranKeens is 110% worth the hype. The ambience is top notch where you can hear others you are with. It’s very elegant inside. The staff was very attentive to our table and we had an amazing waitress! I never got her name but she made our night one to remember! All cuts of meat were phenomenal, the mutton, t bone, prime rib, all amazing. I thought the prime rib was very standout and a must have. For appetizers, the calamari salad and bacon were perfect starters. Bacon is a must-buy!Overall, it’s definitely worth it. I recommend doing a Resy Notify and hope to score a good time. Otherwise, you will have to book far out. Regardless it’s super worth it!
August 02 · Pat ZI recently had the pleasure of dining at Keen’s Steakhouse, and it absolutely lived up to its legendary reputation — especially when it came to their famous mutton chop. The chop was cooked to perfection — beautifully seared on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. The seasoning was spot-on: rich, savory, and expertly balanced to highlight the deep, hearty flavor of the meat. It’s a cut that commands attention, and Keen’s delivers it with confidence and tradition.Service was excellent — attentive without being overbearing. The staff clearly know the menu and the restaurant’s storied history, and it adds to the charm of the whole experience. What really sets Keen’s apart, though, is the atmosphere. The dining rooms are steeped in history, with thousands of antique clay pipes hanging from the ceiling — each one telling a story. You can’t help but pause when you spot the most famous names, like Babe Ruth and Teddy Roosevelt. It’s like dining in a museum of New York’s past.In all, if you’re a fan of classic steakhouses and want a bite of history, Keen’s mutton chop is a must-try. It’s an iconic dish in an iconic setting — and one I’d happily return for.
June 22 · Kevin DrostWonderful food, service and ambiance. We came for a birthday celebration and the staff made it so special. Made the reservation a month in advance for prime time Saturday night. We loved the prime rib, fabulous! They came and sang happy birthday with a slice of cheesecake that made it so special. The room itself is really cool to see the pipes on the ceiling. It’s a huge restaurant with lots of rooms. Definitely recommend for a special occasion!
August 10 · Amelia TWe visited Keens Steakhouse and honestly, from start to finish there was no “wow” moment — neither in the service nor in the steaks. We ordered lamb, a porterhouse for three, crab cakes, salads, and vegetables. Even the bread was hard as a rock and almost impossible to enjoy.I truly don’t understand how this place became so famous. The only surprising positive was their wine list — many bottle options under $100, which was appreciated. But overall, the food was mediocre at best, bite after bite.I probably won’t be coming back to try any more steaks here.
