I stumbled upon this food cart in Chinatown that sells boot jai go (砵仔糕)—a traditional Hong Kong street snack! These are steamed pudding cakes served in small bowls. They don’t just stick to the classics, as I saw there are creative flavors I’ve never seen before, like osmanthus, black sesame, pineapple, ube, and mango. You’ll find the cart on Bayard Street, right in front of Xi Ne Du. Google Maps says it’s closed on weekends, but it actually opened when I stopped by on a Sunday.Challenge me – brown sugar with red beans is the GOAT. Apparently, brown sugar and white sugar are the two classic boot jai go flavors, so you won’t go wrong with either of these. The taste is so nostalgic.Osmanthus and Black Sesame were fun to try, but I probably won’t get them again. The osmanthus one was mildly sweet with a subtle floral note. The black sesame one was quite nutty but didn’t wow me. I also realized the texture of these two flavors were more floppy.$2/pc, $5/4 pcs - Ruby Chan

Little Bowl Cake Cart (Put Chai Ko) Introduce

In the vibrant and ever-evolving culinary landscape of New York City, some of the most memorable discoveries are found not in fancy restaurants but on the street. For those in search of a true hidden gem, look no further than Little Bowl Cake Cart (Put Chai Ko), a cherished spot nestled in the heart of Chinatown. This unique food cart specializes in “Put Chai Ko,” or steamed pudding cakes, a traditional Hong Kong street snack that offers a taste of nostalgia and a delightful textural experience. For locals who grew up with these flavors or those simply curious to try something new and authentic, this cart is a must-visit destination.

The experience of stumbling upon this food cart, as one customer describes, is part of its charm. Located on Bayard Street, it’s a place that captures the essence of classic New York street food culture. What makes Little Bowl Cake Cart so special is its blend of tradition and innovation. While the classic flavors of brown sugar and white sugar are available, they also offer a fascinating array of creative and unique flavors that you won’t find just anywhere. This commitment to both the old and the new is what truly sets them apart and keeps customers coming back to see what new creations they might discover.

The cakes themselves are a testament to simple, flavorful craftsmanship. They are steamed to perfection, resulting in a slightly chewy, firm, yet soft texture that is incredibly satisfying. The classic brown sugar with red beans is highlighted by one reviewer as a must-try, described as "the GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) and "so nostalgic." The taste brings back memories and connects patrons to a rich culinary history. The inclusion of visible pieces of fruit and flowers in some of the cakes, as another customer noted, adds both an aesthetic appeal and a burst of natural flavor, making each bite an enjoyable surprise.

Beyond the traditional offerings, the creativity of the menu is a major draw. The cart offers inventive flavors that stand out, such as osmanthus, black sesame, pineapple, ube, and mango. For the more adventurous eater, these are a chance to explore new flavor combinations. One reviewer mentioned that while the osmanthus and black sesame were "fun to try," they found the texture to be "more floppy" compared to the classics, a detail that speaks to the different recipes and ingredients used. However, another customer raved about their choices, loving the water chestnut and finding the mango and osmanthus flavors to be "super refreshing," especially for warmer months. This variety ensures that every visit can be a new culinary adventure.

For those who might be hesitant about trying a new kind of food or who do not speak Chinese, the cart has thoughtfully added English translations to its menu. This small but significant detail makes the experience more accessible and welcoming to a broader audience, ensuring that anyone can confidently order and learn about the delicious snacks they are about to enjoy. It’s this kind of consideration that elevates a simple food cart into a beloved community fixture. The prices are also very reasonable, with options to purchase single cakes or a bundle of four, making it an affordable treat to share or enjoy on your own.

Located at 43 Bayard St, New York, NY 10013, USA, Little Bowl Cake Cart is a convenient spot for anyone exploring Chinatown or the surrounding areas. Its presence on Bayard Street, right in front of Xi Ne Du, makes it easy to find. While some online information might be a bit misleading—one review pointed out that Google Maps said the cart was closed on weekends when it was, in fact, open on a Sunday—the general location is well-established. This makes it a perfect stop for a "quick visit," whether you're grabbing a snack on your lunch break or as a sweet treat after a meal in the neighborhood.

Parking can be a consideration in this bustling part of the city. While there is paid street parking available, many New Yorkers prefer to navigate the area on foot or via public transportation. The cart’s accessible location makes it a great choice for pedestrians exploring the vibrant streets of Chinatown. The primary service option is takeout, which aligns perfectly with its nature as a quick street food vendor.
