Macondo Restaurant & Bakery Introduce
For residents across New Jersey craving an authentic taste of South America, Macondo Restaurant & Bakery in Clifton stands as a prominent destination for Colombian cuisine. This establishment successfully combines the heartiness of a traditional Colombian restaurant with the fresh, comforting warmth of a dedicated bakery. The name 'Macondo' itself, referencing the fictional town from Gabriel García Márquez's literature, suggests a vibrant, cultural experience, a promise the restaurant strives to fulfill with its rich menu.
Macondo specializes in a vast array of authentic Colombian staples, making it a true cultural cross-section of the country's diverse culinary landscape. The menu serves as a guide to Colombian gastronomy, covering everything from morning favorites to late-night street food. Diners can start their day with traditional breakfasts like the hearty Calentado
(rice and beans mixed) or the powerful El Poderoso
(a large, all-encompassing breakfast plate), or opt for the lighter, classic Desayunito
. Beyond breakfast, the kitchen shines with its Platos Fuertes
, featuring the iconic Bandeja Paisa
—a massive platter showcasing the region's best, including steak, chorizo, chicharron, rice, beans, a fried egg, and plantains.
The 'Bakery' component of Macondo is equally vital to its identity, offering a superb selection of Colombian baked goods (Parva
) that are hard to find elsewhere, such as Pan De Bono (cheese bread), Pan De Yuca, and Buñuelo. These items, along with the homemade desserts like Classic Tres Leches
and Cheesecake De Maracuyá
, have garnered praise, contributing to the restaurant's reputation for 'Great coffee' and 'Great dessert.' The atmosphere is consistently described as Casual, Cozy, and Trendy, with unique decor that aims to capture the essence of Colombia.
However, potential diners should be aware of a recurring theme in customer feedback related to the handling of extra requests, specifically concerning complimentary sauces. Multiple reviews express frustration over the restaurant’s policy of charging for an additional side of their popular pink sauce
, even when multiple items are ordered, leading to a sense of disappointment in customer service despite the enjoyment of the food itself. While the food is consistently enjoyed by many, service attitude and policy around small extras have been cited as areas needing attention, which is a common challenge for busy local establishments.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have to start by saying I really enjoy the food here. The atmosphere is a very inviting and the employees are pleasant. What I am disappointed in is something that I cannot wrap my head around. I normally order one empanada in addition to my other items. With that 1 empanada you get 1free sauce however today I decided to order 2 empanadas, 1 for myself and 1 for another person. I was only given one pink sauce and when I asked for another pink sauce for the second empanada, I was told I’d have to pay for it. I explained I ordered 2 empanadas and not 1 and she reiterated I’d still have to pay for it. Although this made no sense to me, “I said OK how much” and I was told $1.50. $1.50 for a 1oz small plastic container that is only filled 1/2 way with this sauce Seems quite absurd. So I’m wondering if I placed 2 separate orders would I get 2 pink sauces or would I have still had to pay $1.50 for it? Either way, based on this premise I will just continue to order 1 and sadly the business will lose out on any additional orders or I’ll just find another Business to support.
September 19 · The Baking JourneyI made an order thru grubhub and called the store to make sure they add an extra pink sauce that I ask for. Only one… and they were going to charge me ??? For a sauce ?The attitude of the worker that answered my phone call was disgusting when I told her that I always order Macondo and they always give sauce without cost. And she said I don’t care I’m not like the rest of the workers.Incredible.That’s why good restaurants lost clients because of the people you hire. Not ordering here not more and not coming back.
September 18 · veronica cerezoThis is crazy. I just got this order and paid $50, and look at how much sauce they gave small containers which are NOT full at all. Some barely have any. This would NOT have been the case if the dad was still around. You need to do better I can do these at home but paid for them and for that price I except to have more sauce with them.
December 18 · Jovanna GonzalezI have been coming here for 10 years and I will always love their coffee and colombian chicken empanadas.Sadly, prices have continued to increase and the food quality has decreased. It doesnt hit the same. The inside is beautifully decorated and the staff is helpful.
August 12 · Mya RodriguezI've been dying to try the hamburger here first a while. Today was the day, and it was delicious. So tasty!
