Omakase Room by Mitsu Introduce
For those in New York seeking a truly elevated and intimate Japanese dining experience, Omakase Room by Mitsu is a destination like no other. Tucked away on a discreet lower level in the heart of the West Village, this restaurant is a serene and focused sanctuary for the art of sushi. The name "omakase" literally translates to "I leave it up to you," and here, that trust is placed in the hands of Chef Mitsunori Isoda, a veteran of New York’s high-end sushi scene. He and his team orchestrate a culinary performance, guiding guests through a multi-course menu that showcases the freshest, most seasonal ingredients with precision and artistry.
The experience at Omakase Room by Mitsu is about more than just a meal; it’s a ceremony. The ambiance is upscale yet cozy, with a minimalist decor that puts the focus squarely on the food and the craftsmanship of the chef. Every piece of sushi is meticulously prepared right in front of you, with the chef explaining each creation, its origins, and how it’s best enjoyed. This interactive and personal approach creates a unique bond between the diner and the chef. While the price point reflects the extraordinary quality and exclusivity, the experience is considered a fantastic value for the level of mastery and high-end ingredients presented. This is a place for a special occasion, where time is savored and each bite is a moment to be cherished.
Omakase Room by Mitsu is located at 14 Christopher St Lower Level, New York, NY 10014, USA. The restaurant's West Village location is both charming and convenient, accessible from various parts of Manhattan. Being on a side street, it offers a sense of exclusivity and quiet seclusion from the bustling city. The intimate nature of the restaurant means there are a limited number of seats, typically centered around a sushi counter, which adds to the personal feel of the experience.
Given its lower-level location, guests will need to walk down a set of stairs to enter the restaurant, as is common in many downtown New York establishments. While specific accessibility information for wheelchair access is not publicly listed, the restaurant's focus is on an intimate, reservation-only dining experience.
Dine-in: The only service offered at Omakase Room by Mitsu is dine-in, as the omakase experience requires the full attention and presence of the chef and the diner. This is a deliberate choice to ensure the highest quality and most personal experience possible. The format is a fixed-price, multi-course meal, with an option to order additional pieces after the set menu is completed. Reservations are required to secure a spot for this sought-after experience.
Table Service: The experience is fully guided by the chef and staff. Each piece of sushi is served individually, directly by the chef, with explanations about the fish and preparation. This attentive table service is a core part of the omakase tradition, ensuring each guest can focus on the flavors and textures of every course.
Reservations: Because of its small size and exclusive nature, reservations are required and highly recommended for dinner. This ensures that the chef can prepare the exact amount of fresh fish needed for each seating, reducing waste and maintaining the highest standard of quality.
Authentic Edomae-Style Omakase: The primary highlight of Omakase Room by Mitsu is its commitment to traditional Edomae-style sushi. This style emphasizes aged fish and precise preparation techniques, with a focus on highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients. Fish is flown in daily from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market to ensure absolute freshness and quality.
Masterful Chef Interaction: The experience is truly a performance by the chef. Chef Mitsu is celebrated for his skill and for the personal interaction he provides to each diner. He explains the details of each piece, from the sourcing of the fish to the seasoning, creating a personal and educational journey for every guest. He is known for being accommodating and engaging with his guests, making the experience feel special and welcoming.
Exquisite Food and Fresh Ingredients: The menu is ever-changing, based on the availability of the best seasonal fish. The core offering is a multi-piece sushi tasting, which includes a progression of carefully selected nigiri pieces. The quality of the fish is consistently praised as exceptional, and diners are instructed to eat each piece quickly to savor it at its peak freshness. Standout offerings include a variety of fish not commonly found at other restaurants, all expertly prepared.
Curated Drink Pairings: The restaurant offers a thoughtfully curated selection of beverages, including a diverse list of sake, wine, beer, and hard liquor. The sake list, in particular, is noted for its quality and breadth, with options that beautifully complement the delicate flavors of the sushi. They also offer non-alcoholic Japanese teas and soft drinks.
Upscale, Intimate Atmosphere: The cozy, trendy, and upscale ambiance is perfect for a special occasion. The limited seating creates an intimate setting where diners can fully immerse themselves in the culinary experience without distractions, making it a perfect spot for a romantic date or a celebratory dinner.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Such an amazing and lovely omakase experience. We got the reservation time wrong but the restaurant was so accommodating in our tardiness. It didn’t hamper the experience in any way. The food, service and ambiance were fantastic. Staff were all so warm and welcoming. Highly recommend for an omakase experience!
April 08 · Allison TWe were originally booked at the Omakase Room by Shin in midtown, but our reservations were moved to a later time, which meant we won't make it to the show we were going to see. I was just going to cancel but the manager suggested moving our reservation to this place and she arranged everything for us. This proved serendipitous as this proved to be quite a discovery. The moment we walked down the steps and entered the place, we were greeted warmly by the hostess, shown to our seats, and explained the whole ceremony that is dining omakase. The chef started his magic: slicing, dicing, constructing each piece with adept hands. Each serving was an event. Each piece was a feast to be savored quickly as per instructions given by the chef himself (with a quick pause for pictures, of course). Yes, it was expensive but totally worth it. It lasts about almost 2 hours. There is no rushing through the experience. If you do decide to try this place, remember, be mindful of the taste, textures, and flavor of each morsel. Dare I say, it will be transcendent.
November 21 · Gerry EOmakase Room by Mitsu is a hidden gem for sushi enthusiasts seeking an intimate dining experience in NYC. With a focus on traditional Edomae sushi, Chef Mitsu expertly crafts each piece with precision and care, highlighting the natural flavors of the freshest ingredients. The minimalist setting enhances the personal touch, creating a serene atmosphere. Each course is a delightful journey, offering a perfect balance of texture and taste. For those looking to savor authentic omakase, this spot is a must-visit.I highly recommend this spot. I had a great time here, and top of the line chefs and food. You will kill two birds with one stone.
January 13 · Amir EmamiDisappointing omakase experience. While the fish quality was excellent, the treatment of it was not.Not a single standout dish to report. The toro in the hand roll appetizer was ice cold, which masked the flavor of the fish. Several of the nigiri pieces were over salted, and the rice tasted off throughout. The service was kind and attentive. However, all 12 courses were prepared and served by the same chef for the entire bar, which made this tasting menu extremely slow.I had high hopes for this place based on its glowing reviews, but I cannot recommend. Many omakase options in the city with better food and a much lower price tag.
September 16 · Annie RosencransBest Omakase in NYC, the chef knows what he does, he proposes very fresh and quality fishes, taste combinations are god level, and the execution is awesome. The service is perfect, there are very aware of what’s happening and help us in the best way possible. If I come back to NYC I’ll do it again for sure 🔥
