What is Worth Choosing: A Local's Perspective
For New Jersey diners, Rahongbu Malatang offers several compelling reasons to choose it over other local options, primarily centered on its unique and flavorful menu specializations.
The Malatang and Malasangguo Experience: The restaurant’s namesake, Malatang, is a must-try. It allows for a completely customizable soup experience, letting you select ingredients to match your preference for spice and flavor. However, the Malasangguo (Dry Hot Pot) ($20.95) is frequently highlighted by loyal patrons who appreciate its rich, consistent, and addictive flavor profile. The ability to control the spice and tailor the ingredients ensures a fresh and exciting meal every time.
Unrivaled Dakgalbi Variety: If you're looking for a communal, interactive meal, the Dakgalbi options are outstanding. The classic Hong Chuncheon Dakgalbi is a great starting point, but the luxurious seafood options, like the Octopus Dakgalbi ($61.95), showcase a commitment to premium ingredients and diverse culinary styles.
Beyond the Classics: Don't overlook the extensive 'Additional Meals' and 'Side' sections. Items like Quoporou ($14.95)—a crisp, sweet and sour pork dish—and the various rice and noodle options, such as Mak-Guksu ($13.95) and Mul-Naengmyeon ($13.95), provide satisfying alternatives and complements to the spicy main dishes. For a quick, affordable addition, the Fish Roe Fried Rice ($5.95) is a highly recommended side.
It is important for any local considering a visit to acknowledge the varied experiences reported by diners, which is common in the restaurant industry. While some customers rave about the consistent flavor of specialty dishes and the quality of the service and accompanying banchan (like sweet potato fries), others have reported less satisfactory experiences. The fact that the restaurant remains a busy spot popular with locals indicates that for many, the quality and unique flavors—especially the dry hot pot and the specialty Dakgalbi—are strong reasons for repeat visits. Ultimately, Rahongbu Malatang offers a chance to experience a specific, bold, and customizable segment of Chinese and Korean-Chinese cuisine that is a refreshing change from standard New Jersey Chinese take-out, making it well worth a visit to form your own opinion on its standout dishes.
The dedicated focus on bold flavors, particularly the spicy and numbing mala experience, alongside the unique selection of Dakgalbi and other sides like Mara Chicken ($32.95), cement its position as a unique and flavorful option in Bergen County. The variety of menu items ensures that whether you're craving soup, a stir-fry, or a light snack, Rahongbu Malatang has a high-quality dish to satisfy your appetite.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I come to NJ often from Flushing, NY, and most of the time I make sure to have lunch at Rahongbu because I LOVE their dry hot pot. I especially enjoy the banchan they serve, like the peanuts and sweet potato fries, and the flavor is always consistent — unlike some places where it changes every time. Always a satisfying meal! 😋
August 10 · na naI’m pretty sure all these reviews are fake.We waited 15 minutes, then a man from the back came and took our orders. He then proceeded to take our food to the back and separate ingredients with his bare hands, without having washed his hands.Malatang was so bad… it tasted like old bean sprout water, if you can imagine that. Left all my food as it was inedible and walked out, waste of money.Go to mala mini instead.. but don’t go too often cuz I don’t like to wait.
August 22 · S PThe service at this restaurant was excellent—the staff at the front desk were very friendly, and the whole place was clean and spacious. It was our first visit, and we ordered the spicy dry pot and some BBQ. The BBQ was delicious, but the spicy dry pot didn’t quite meet my expectations. It tasted like it was cooked with hot pot seasoning, which isn’t necessarily bad, but some of the ingredients didn’t absorb the flavors well. It felt like the seasoning was just coating the surface rather than blending with the dishes. Overall, it was a good experience, but the dry pot could use some improvement.
January 28 · Wing HatchJust had the BEST malatang experience! The broth was rich and flavorful, with the perfect balance of spice and umami. Fresh ingredients galore, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Seriously craving it already, I am a frequent diner here!
August 23 · julia sI was craving for some hot and spicy malatang this past weekend and I stumbled upon this new restaurant. There aren't many places that serve authentic malatang-how they make it in Korea nowadays. You get to choose all the toppings you want in your tang including veggies, meats, fish cake, noodles, and seafood. They weigh the amount and price it by pound. They then cook it in the mala stew back in the kitchen. We got the medium spicy level and it was just rightWe also got an order of lamb skewers. I've had better quality so I don't recommend getting it here. The malatang however was delicious and it hit the spot on a chilly night.Service was great considering how busy they were. It's a casual environment and also byob! Parking lot is behind the building. Restaurant is on the 2nd floor.
