The Sunday gravy meal is worth it. You have a choice of salad. A bowl of assorted olives and freshly bread with bean dip arrive at the table. Both were delicious. The salad is assorted greens with a light vinaigrette dressing. When Sunday dinner arrives, it is a large bowl filled with fresh homemade pasta. Another bowl arrives filled with meatballs, sausage, and mini pork roast. The meat has been simmering in red gravy for the entire day. Just like grandma made. The desserts are all homemade by a pastry chef. Everything about this place is great. Prices are moderate.
April 15 · ej shortellWhen Saul decided to pack it in and move to the Brooklyn Museum I was heartbroken. Not because I ate at Saul all the time (who could afford that?) but because I was losing a good neighbor. Thankfully we still had Red Gravy around the corner for those special occasions when the other spots were just not fancy enough. Plus, who doesn't love Southern Italian food? The problem with Red Gravy isn't the food (it's delicious), the atmosphere (fun & relaxing), the drinks (potent), or even the price (let's just say, more than I would normally spend). The problem last night was the service. I don't know if our waiter was new, or having a bad night, or just a bad waiter. Our cocktails were late. They tried to serve our wine before the cocktails even arrived. He didn't seem to really know the menu. Saul's signature restaurant was special because you felt taken care of. Red Gravy matches Saul in the caliber of the food, but not in service. Will I return? Probably at some point. I enjoyed my meal, but this is Brooklyn and we have plenty of choices for all types of cuisine.
March 09 · Sam JacobsI was pleasantly surprised by the comfortable atmosphere (especially at the bar, where I took my seat) and the just-the-right-size small plates perfect for sharing with a friend or date. Red Gravy serves up complimentary focaccia bread with hummus for dipping, which was freshly baked and addicting.Then, I ordered the octopus, one of my favorites, which was cooked perfectly with a lemony, garlic, olive oil sauce. I followed with meatballs sitting in a bed of creamy polenta, the slightly salty brussels sprouts salad (but still good, nonetheless) with figs, and finally the bucatini with sea urchin, basil, chili, and scallions. I didn’t want the bowl of pasta to end, making my first sea urchin experience a positive one. If you’ve never had it, it’s kind of squishy and fishy, but went well with the spicy pasta dish. In the tough choice between a cocktail and wine, I selected a light Italian red from the extensive wine list, and could not manage to finish with dessert.The restaurant is airy and open, much bigger than I expected, but still keeps a cozy vibe.Overall excellent experience!
