Ruma and Shanta Introduce
In a city filled with endless dining options, from five-star restaurants to street food vendors, finding a spot that combines great food, affordability, and a welcoming atmosphere can feel like a rare and special find. For New Yorkers in the know, Ruma and Shanta is exactly that kind of place. Located on 14th Street in the vibrant Union Square neighborhood, this establishment is more than just a diner; it’s a destination for authentic, delicious Halal food that feels like a home-cooked meal. Unlike many of the more formal or fast-paced eateries in the area, Ruma and Shanta offers a cozy and casual vibe that invites you to slow down and enjoy your food.
The core of Ruma and Shanta's appeal lies in its focus on classic, comforting Halal dishes. Their menu, though concise, is packed with flavor and high-quality ingredients. The star of the show for many are the platters: the Lamb Over Rice and Chicken Over Rice. These iconic New York street food staples are served with generous portions of tender, seasoned meat over a bed of fluffy rice, often accompanied by their signature white sauce and a tangy hot sauce. The popularity of these dishes is a testament to the fact that simple food, when prepared well, can be incredibly satisfying. Beyond the platters, they also offer classic gyros with your choice of chicken or lamb, as well as a selection of other quick bites like a Chicken Cheese Steak, Hot Dog, and Hot Sausage. The variety, while not extensive, is perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner that feels both familiar and delicious.
What truly sets Ruma and Shanta apart, however, is the combination of quality and value. In a city known for its high prices, this diner offers incredibly reasonable prices for portions that are famously generous. Many customers highlight the fact that you can tell the meat is real chicken and lamb, a sign of the commitment to quality that underpins their entire operation. The friendly service from the staff, who are described by patrons as kind, polite, and generous, further enhances the dining experience. It's the kind of place where you feel like a valued customer, not just another number, making it a favorite for solo diners and families alike.

The food quality here was obvious from my first taste. Both service crew and atmosphere enhance the dining experience. Try a bit of everything for the best experience. I found the quality higher than predicted. I disagree with anyone giving lower scores.
