What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Shahi Kitchen is choosing an unparalleled experience of Bangladeshi flavor and comfort in the heart of New York. For long-time residents of the city who appreciate authentic international cuisine, or those simply tired of the same old takeout, Shahi Kitchen provides a flavorful escape.
The primary reason to choose Shahi Kitchen is the depth of flavor in their signature items. The Goat Kacchi Biryani is non-negotiable for a first-time visitor. Its preparation, involving slow-cooking marinated goat meat over layered, fragrant rice, results in a dish that is deeply aromatic and satisfyingly rich, often described as a culinary 'superstar.' This dish exemplifies the regal "Shahi" quality the restaurant is named after.
Another compelling choice is the Beef Tehari or Beef Khichuri. Tehari is known for its distinct blend of aromatic spices and tender beef, cooked with rice to create a flavorful one-pot meal, while Khichuri offers a perfect, comforting remedy for a cold day. These homestyle comfort foods showcase the chef's skill in balancing bold spices to create warm, inviting flavors. Customers also rave about the Beef Rezala, a tender beef dish cooked in a rich, creamy, and aromatic yogurt-based sauce, which is a must-try for curry enthusiasts.
For a lighter, yet equally flavorful option, explore the small plates like the various Bhajis and Vortas (mashed vegetable preparations), which are reminiscent of authentic homestyle meals, and pair perfectly with their fresh breads. Finally, don't leave without trying the Borhani, a traditional tangy yogurt drink that acts as the perfect palate cleanser after a rich, spiced meal.
Ultimately, Shahi Kitchen offers New Yorkers a chance to support a local, family-friendly business that is genuinely committed to preserving and sharing the rich culinary heritage of Dhaka. While an occasional review might point to an off day in service, the overwhelming sentiment among patrons is that the food quality, authenticity, and flavorful preparation are top-tier and consistently worth the visit. It is an ideal spot for those who seek high-quality, flavorful, and affordable comfort food that truly tastes like it was cooked with passion and heritage. July 22 · Arif KhanWe were a group of three people, ordered three different dishes to try. Kacchi biryani meat was nicely done- tender, juicy but the rice lacked flavor! Achari khichuri and beef Tehari was not bad. Their service was horrible and needs more attention from the management. When we went there, literally the restaurant had 5 customers and three people working at the front. We sat down and no one even bothered to say hello, after waiting for the server ti come and take the order- we decided to go to the register and ordered. I wish them all the best
June 25 · Md KayyumI recently visited Shahi Kitchen twice and tried a variety of items from their menu including kacchi biriyani, polao, chicken roast, borhani, and a vegetable singara. The kacchi biriyani came with two pieces of meat, a potato, and an egg, which is generous in portion. While it didn’t taste extraordinary, it was slightly better than other nearby options. The spices were balanced well, but the overall flavor didn’t stand out as memorable. The polao was a bit disappointing — the rice was undercooked, which took away from the enjoyment of the dish. The chicken roast was decent; nothing remarkable but cooked to a good standard.Unfortunately, the vegetable singara was a letdown — the filling was burnt and gave a bitter taste. This definitely needs improvement. The borhani had a nicely measured spice level, but the consistency was kinda watery. A slightly thicker texture would make it much more satisfying.Overall, Shahi Kitchen has potential, but some dishes need more attention in preparation and quality control. With a few improvements, especially in consistency and cooking, this place could become a solid go-to for desi cuisine in the area.
June 30 · SABRINA YEASMINAfter 16 years later I had a very good quality kacchi . I must say it’s better than many Bangladeshi renowned restaurant. Everyone must try . Highly recommend. Perfect portion of meat and complimentary burhani was just awesome.
July 19 · bappy dasI tried Shahi Kitchen in Hillside, Jamaica—absolutely worth it! Their Goat Biryani/Mutton Kacchi was rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked and most probably was the best Kacchi I ever tasted in New York . The khichuri with beef curry tasted also great. Great place for real Bengali comfort food in New York.
July 26 · H M Obaidul MostafaDelicious food, highly recommend. Ordered a tray of chicken biryani and egg korma for a weekend trip with friends and not only was the food great but the portions were generous!
