Shortway's Barn Introduce
For generations of residents in Northern New Jersey, Shortway's Barn is more than just a bar and grill—it's a landmark steeped in local history and community tradition. Opened legally in September 1933 after the repeal of Prohibition, this establishment, a retrofitted barn, has served as a central gathering place for the Hawthorne community for nearly a century. This long-standing heritage gives the venue a truly unique, rustic, and historic ambiance that you simply won't find at newer chains or modern spots.
Shortway's Barn is an authentic, no-frills local watering hole, beloved for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Many patrons describe the vibe as being "just like Cheers," where regulars are known by name and new faces are quickly made to feel at home. It skillfully combines the comfort of a classic sports bar with the engaging energy of a live music venue, ensuring there's something to enjoy whether you're looking for a casual lunch, a lively dinner, or late-night entertainment.
This historic locale proudly offers a comprehensive menu of American family favorites and comfort food, alongside a well-stocked bar featuring a great selection of beers, cocktails, and spirits. It’s a place where tradition and good times seamlessly blend, making it a reliable and affordable spot for families and groups looking for a casual, cozy night out in Passaic County.

The story of Shortway's Barn is deeply woven into the fabric of Hawthorne. It was founded by Anthony "Tune" Tunis Shortway, an accomplished athlete who, during the Prohibition years, was convinced to convert his property's barn into a small, legitimate bar once the ban was lifted. Over the years, the business was carried on by the Shortway family, notably by Marge Shortway, who was known for her endless energy, love of the community, and becoming the first woman elected to the Hawthorne Council. The Barn itself became known affectionately as "The House that Marge Built," reflecting the warm and friendly atmosphere she cultivated. This deep family connection and dedication to local service remain the core of the Shortway's experience today.
Patrons consistently return not just for the food and drinks, but for the unmistakable community spirit. As one long-time customer notes, it's their "favorite weekly, if not more, place to go," praising the relaxing atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. While the establishment embraces its classic, somewhat rustic style, the focus remains on providing a fun experience—a place where you always see "someone to smile and wave to."

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Our favorite weekly, if not more, place to go. Friendly, relaxing, great food, affordable for families. Food is great, atmosphere is just like Cheers! You always see someone to smile and wave to. Staff is friendly and attentive. Great later evening entertainment on the weekends and sometimes good dinner musicians during the week.
June 04 · Nick&Mel HagedoornThis bar definitely has its regulars for a reason ...there’s a nostalgic, dive-bar comfort vibe and the bartenders are characters in the best way. That said, if you’re coming in on the strength of the food such as the burger or roast beef sandwich you might want to recalibrate your expectations. Both came out dry, and the roast beef gravy had an odd taste that didn’t quite land. The burger’s biggest flex is its size, not its flavor. Our server was not rude but a bit checked out . The place is very dim and could use a refresh, but that’s also part of the appeal. Fried ravioli was ok kinda chewy. All in... come for the vibe and a beer. If food’s your main goal, there are better bets elswhere.. This is def a local watering hole more than anything
July 06 · Mogreat little place that is like part dive bar but along with a great menu. and it's not just your dive bar food they have restaurant quality stuff. ribeye steak sandwich was outstanding and their wings are great too excellent selection of beer on tap as well.
April 23 · Roland KWhat a great place!! Delicious prime rib meal, soup or salad, potato choice and fresh veg. Hard to beat! Maybe impossible to beat! Great happy hour
August 28 · Beverly LanternanBeen there several times. Food is good (especially the pizza). Big problem (although small), they never give you change back. For example; if the bill is $50.25, they will give you $49.00 without giving you the .75. They do this all the time and it’s quite nervy.
