Yella's Introduce
If you're looking for an authentic taste of American classics delivered with New Jersey flair, look no further than Yella's in Hawthorne. More than just a sandwich shop or burger joint, Yella's is a family-owned establishment built on generations of food industry experience, offering high-quality, hand-crafted food in a fun, nostalgic atmosphere. It's a place where every meal is designed to be "food worth screaming about," a motto that honors the owner's grandfather, Frank, whose nickname "Yella" came from his days as a spirited dance caller in the 1930s and 40s.
Yella's has established itself as a local favorite, blending the comfort of old-school deli classics with modern, gourmet takes on burgers and chicken sandwiches. Their commitment is simple: exceptional quality, fresh ingredients, and friendly, family-focused service that makes every customer feel welcome.

The family story behind Yella's dates back to 1967 when the family first entered the food industry as a deli meat and cheese distributor. This long-standing commitment to quality ingredients is evident in every item on the menu. From the generously portioned sandwiches named after family members to the famous hand-spun milkshakes, Yella's delivers a meal experience that is both satisfying and memorable. The restaurant has successfully cultivated a local following in New Jersey, with its Hawthorne location becoming a go-to spot for both quick lunches and family dinners.

Yella's has a particularly strong connection to the local community, as evidenced by glowing customer testimonials. One review highlights the business's exceptional community spirit, recounting a visit to a local school to lead a free "sandwich lesson" for students with special needs. The customer noted, "The staff are consistently kind, patient, and welcoming, and our students always enjoy the delicious sandwiches." Finding a local business dedicated to giving back and making meaningful connections is a rare and wonderful thing, and Yella's clearly strives to be that kind of partner to the New Jersey community.

The atmosphere itself is a key part of the Yella's experience. It’s often described as a mix of old-school retro with a modern twist, evoking the fun and energy of a classic 50's diner. The dining area is clean, spacious, and features an open-concept assembly line where you can watch your food being prepared fresh. The decor is designed to be inviting and photo-worthy, complete with real family photos of 'Grandpa Yella' and those who inspired the signature sandwich names, adding a layer of personal charm and nostalgia to your visit.
—
Another customer review mentioned driving by countless times without realizing the gem hidden within, only to be drawn in by an Instagram post about the milkshakes. This speaks volumes about the quality of the food—it looks and smells so great that even a simple stop for a shake can leave you "very tempted to order their loaded fries" for next time. Yella's is a delightful local discovery that turns first-time visitors into enthusiastic regulars.

What is Worth Choosing
When you visit Yella's, you're choosing an American classic experience rooted in family tradition and a genuine dedication to quality. The menu is diverse enough to satisfy any craving, but a few items consistently stand out for those looking for a truly authentic Yella's experience. You absolutely must try one of their signature, over-the-top Hand-Spun Milkshakes—they are the perfect end to any meal and a major draw for the local community. For the sandwich aficionado, the Hot Pastrami with Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on sliced rye is highly recommended for its classic deli flavor, or try one of the hot subs like The Benny Brown, featuring sliced steak, sautéed onions, fresh mozzarella, and rich brown gravy. Their side game is strong, too; the Loaded Fries (crispy fries topped with cheddar cheese sauce, gravy, crumbled bacon, and banana peppers) and their crispy Onion Rings are consistently praised by locals. The staff are consistently kind, patient, and welcoming, and our students always enjoy the delicious sandwiches. What truly sets this business apart is their generosity and community spirit. They even visited our school to lead a free “sandwich lesson” for our students—complete with all the ingredients to make turkey sandwiches and some fun Yella’s gear to take home. The students were thrilled! It’s rare to find a business so dedicated to giving back and making meaningful connections. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and look forward to continuing this amazing partnership.
July 02 · Laura TolveI have passed this place so many times and never knew it was there. Saw an Instagram post about the milkshakes, so I grabbed two of my kids, and we headed down. Great place. Definitely will be coming back to try their food as it smelled and looked great. Shakes are a perfect size and tasted great. They should try and make a toasted almond. We had just finished dinner at home, but I was very tempted to order their loaded fries as I saw a table enjoying them next to us. Next time!
July 22 · John ClarkeThe hubs has been itching to try this place for a while and today we finally got a chance. Place was clean and the decor was very cute. Make sure you visit if you ever find yourself in Hawthorne.
November 01 · Tansy RiverYumm yummm Yumm found this place with my friend on a hungry day and boy we were happy! We shared the chicken sandwich, wings, burger and some delicious desert. This place hit the spot!Yallas has been owned since 1967 and was created by the family to honor the dream and legacy of Grandpa Yella. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with a friendly smile from the staff and the atmosphere feels cozy as you are surrounded by grandpa Yella’s family photographs on the wall. Now let’s talk about the FOOD! The menu is not like a typical take out place, it offers amazing options from sandwiches, deli classics, hot subs, chicken sandwiches, burgers, small bites which include out of this world wings and wait for it HAND-SPUN SHAKES!!! In addition they offer a catering menu which is perfect for corporate meetings, birthday and family gatherings! I cant wait to order some platters myself for the next Super Bowl party! What I found unique and cool are the different flavor options of the fountain drinks, they are all made with pure cane sugar. Some of the flavors include Root beer, black cherry, lemonade, orange etc..Lastly I need to highlight the legendary strawberry shortcake HAND -SPUN shake. The size is generous, and you can easily share it with 2 people. I have no words to describe the explosion of flavors and satisfying sweet taste! You wont regret trying it! these milkshakes are sure to hit the spot.I had an amazing experience, delicious food! An absolute must in New Jersey!highly recommend !
October 09 · Pauline SDecided to stop by this sandwich shop. What a fun vibe! Love the decor, music and style. The soda machine is amazing! You really don’t see a selection like this via fountain drink machine anywhere else in this area. I ordered the Uncle Pat to go but ended up sitting and eating it in house just because I appreciated the atmosphere. The sandwich itself as a whole , was very good. Two things, I requested Russian dressing, it was there but very very light. They gave a nice heaping of mustard on the side which was delicious. Secondly, the rye bread did not hold up. It was a soggy mess within minutes of receiving the sandwich. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I took it home. I would return to try a milkshake and different sandwich. Would recommend. Additionally, I really appreciate the easy access to plastic straws.
