Super Taqueria Las Salsas Introduce
A Note to Our Readers: The beloved Super Taqueria Las Salsas in Bridgeport, CT, officially closed its doors for the final time on October 19, 2025, following the retirement of its owner, Gil Salvador Perez Hurtado. For well over a decade, it served as a true culinary landmark in the Connecticut community, evolving from a popular food truck to a cherished brick-and-mortar location. This article serves as a tribute and informational resource to recognize the legacy of this authentic Mexican establishment and the incredible food it brought to the State Street area.
For years, when Connecticut locals craved truly authentic Mexican street food, especially traditional carnitas, one name stood out: Super Taqueria Las Salsas. This establishment, rooted deeply in the family traditions of Michoacán, Mexico—the birthplace of carnitas—was a cherished cornerstone of the Bridgeport dining scene. The restaurant was the culmination of a journey that began with a low-key pop-up and flourished into one of the state’s most popular food trucks, finally settling into its State Street location. It represented more than just a place to eat; it was a testament to the hard work and culinary passion of owner Gil Salvador Perez Hurtado, a lifelong taquero who dedicated over two decades to serving the Connecticut community.
Identifying proudly as a Latino-owned business, Super Taqueria Las Salsas delivered a casual, cozy, and family-friendly atmosphere that welcomed both groups and solo diners. It was a place where tradition was paramount, most famously evidenced by their signature carnitas. This wasn't merely pulled pork; it was an artisanal dish, tracing its heritage in the Hurtado family back to 1931. The process was meticulously old-fashioned: various cuts of pork—including loin, shank, ribs, and stomach—were slow-simmered in a vat of pork fat, a confit-style technique ensuring every bite was tender, juicy, and rich with flavor. It was this unwavering commitment to tradition and quality that made the restaurant a pioneer for family-owned small businesses in the Connecticut food landscape.
The menu was a celebration of Mexican staples, going far beyond the famous carnitas. Customers consistently praised the generous portions and the high quality of the ingredients, often noting the handmade tortillas served piping hot. The restaurant was particularly popular for both lunch and dinner, providing a necessary dose of comfort food alongside healthy and vegetarian options, catering to a diverse local crowd. While the interior was described as small, seating perhaps a dozen people, the energy and high volume of the fast service and brisk takeout business spoke volumes about its local popularity. Customers came for the classic tacos, the overstuffed burritos, the heaping nachos, and stayed for the genuinely warm, welcoming vibe provided by Chava, the owner, who was known to go the extra mile, sometimes surprising patrons with complimentary treats like a whole tostada.
The brick-and-mortar home of Super Taqueria Las Salsas was centrally located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, an easily identifiable spot within a vibrant local community. Its address—1154 State St, Bridgeport, CT 06605—placed it within easy reach for residents across the Greater Bridgeport Planning Region and beyond.
For those driving to visit the location, free street parking was available, making quick stops for takeout convenient. The establishment made provisions for all members of the community, offering key accessibility features: both a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot were available. This ensured that a wider range of patrons could easily enjoy the authentic Mexican cuisine without impediment. While some customers noted that parking could sometimes be limited and that the interior space was cozy and small, the quick-service nature and robust takeout options—perfect for a quick bite—mitigated any potential crowding issues.
The business was designed to meet the needs of the modern Connecticut diner, offering a range of convenient service options:
- Dine-in: For customers who preferred a casual and cozy meal right at the State Street location.
- Takeout: A very popular service option, noted by customers as brisk and efficient, allowing for quick pickups of their favorites.
- Delivery: Partnering with various platforms, the restaurant made it possible to enjoy their authentic Mexican food from the comfort of home or the office.
- Lunch and Dinner Service: The restaurant was open for dining options throughout the main meal periods of the day.
- Family-Friendly: Being recognized as a location that was "Good for kids," it was a great option for family meals, especially since a Kids' menu was offered.
Super Taqueria Las Salsas earned its reputation among Connecticut locals through several distinguishing features:
- Authentic Carnitas Tradition: The primary highlight was the traditional Carnitas Michava con Tradicion 1931, an authentic recipe passed down through generations of the Hurtado family from Michoacán.
- Fast Service: Recognized as a key highlight, the efficiency of the kitchen ensured minimal wait times, whether dining in or picking up takeout.
- Generous Portions: Patrons often spoke of the excellent value, with portions being described as generous, ensuring a satisfying meal.
- Diverse and Traditional Menu: The offerings included specialty items like Tacos Los Mas Buscados, Don Chava Taco de Carnitas, and El Bukiss plates, alongside familiar items like burritos, quesadillas, and nachos, with options for various meats (Carnitas, Pastor, Asada, Chicken, Chorizo, Birria).
- Offerings for All Diets: The menu successfully balanced rich comfort food with options like Healthy options, Small plates, and specifically included Vegetarian options, such as veggie tacos made with mushrooms and other vegetables.
- Homemade Salsas and Drinks: The restaurant was known for its savory, homemade salsas and traditional Mexican beverages like agua frescas (tamarind, horchata, and hibiscus).

Although Super Taqueria Las Salsas is no longer operating, its legacy offers a clear blueprint for what Connecticut locals value in a Mexican restaurant. For years, the single most compelling reason to visit was the unwavering commitment to the Authentic Carnitas. This was not a dish to be missed; whether ordered by the pound—such as the 4 Lb. Don Chava Pack Of Carnitas The Original 1931—or enjoyed in a signature dish like the Carnitas Nachos or Chamorro En Carnitas Plato, the carnitas offered a taste of Mexican tradition unparalleled in the area. Customers, including those who identified as true food enthusiasts, highly recommended this unique, fresh-straight-off-the-grill experience.
Beyond the carnitas, the establishment's strength lay in its execution of Mexican staples at competitive prices and generous sizes. The menu featured popular bundles like the Tacos Los Mas Buscados, which offered five tacos with various authentic fillings for an excellent price point (e.g., $13.50 for Pastor or Chicken), providing a fulfilling meal perfect for solo diners or a quick gathering. Furthermore, the commitment to providing a range of choices, from rich comfort food to Healthy options and Vegetarian options, ensured that every member of the family or group could find a satisfying, high-quality meal.
Ultimately, what made Super Taqueria Las Salsas a special place in the Connecticut food scene was the genuine warmth and quality that came from a dedicated, Latino-owned family business. Owner Gil Salvador Perez Hurtado's final wish to the community was one of gratitude, thanking the people of Connecticut for supporting his family for over 20 years. While a chapter has closed in Bridgeport, the memory of those authentic flavors and the pioneering spirit of this great local spot remains an inspiring part of Connecticut's culinary story.

September 05 · Conrade GrantVery good food. It's very popular among the locals, as there was a brisk take-out business going on. I'll be sure to stop back in if I'm ever in town again. They're not joking about the generous portions - the appetizer they gave me was a whole tostada. The interior is small, seating perhaps 12. No public bathrooms.
July 28 · Jacob MosemanI stop by today, let me tell you., I had Mexican food all around Bridgeport and other towns..and I’m surprised how delicious the food was…while I waited for my order the owner send to my table a tortilla with rice meat salsa very delicious..best red sauce super delicious!!!, the tacos were amazing but I was blown away by the pork adobado meat very flavorful and the beans with rice also. I will make this my only Mexican spot from now on.
October 11 · Madeline AndujarService was really great, excellent, above and beyond. Food was delicious. I ordered the 5 tacos for $12 they were served with rice and beans. My boyfriend ordered steak which also was served with rice and beans. We had an horchata, a jamaica 2 cokes and coffee and honestly everything Food and drinks was great. I would definitely go back there to eat. I recommend this %100 . 👍
July 14 · Eli MtzHnzI've never written a review until now, because well, the food was delicious and the service was 12/10. The food and service was well worth it! Food was plentiful, tasty, and cheap! My son loved his carne burrito and said that it was the best burrito he had ever eaten-he said he could taste the flavors in each bite. He also liked the fact that they toasted the outside of the burrito on the flattop, giving it a nice crunch. The carnitas in my El Bukis was moist and tender and tortillas they came with it were piping hot.The man who took our order (the owner?) was so friendly, he gave us tostados and a tamarind drink to try, on the house. We were visiting from NYC (where Mexican food is plentiful) and after this meal, my son and I were talking about driving the hour plus drive back to eat here again. It's clearly a small business, so we want to do our part to keep them going. If you're craving Mexican food, and in the Milford area or heading to New Haven, definitely put it on the top of your list. It is worth it.
