The Black Whale Introduce
Discovering a true New York gem often means venturing beyond the well-trodden Manhattan paths. For those in the know, City Island in the Bronx offers a unique, small-town coastal feel, and at its heart is a legendary dining spot: The Black Whale. Established in 1961, this is more than just an American restaurant and bar; it's a piece of local history, a gathering place, and a destination for exceptional food and a memorable atmosphere.
From its origins as a bohemian-focused dessert shop founded by self-proclaimed bohemian Richie DePierro, The Black Whale has evolved while retaining its unique, eclectic soul. It's a place where you can comfortably enjoy a hearty, New American meal, sip a handcrafted cocktail, and feel a million miles away from the city bustle—all without leaving the five boroughs. The Black Whale has historically been a foundational element for the unique bohemian population of City Island, having sponsored events like poetry readings and plays in the 1960s, creating a mood reminiscent of Greenwich Village happenings. Today, it continues to welcome both locals and tourists with a cozy, casual, and historic atmosphere that’s perfect for any occasion, from solo dining to a large family get-together.
The menu at The Black Whale is designed for the sophisticated New York palate, offering a diverse array of comfort food, seafood, and classic American dishes with a refined twist. Whether you're craving a robust entree, a light salad, or one of their famous desserts, there's a satisfying option to fit your mood. This establishment proudly represents the best of Bronx dining, offering high-quality food in an environment that is both welcoming and stylishly historic.
The commitment to quality is evident across the menu. For appetizers, you can begin with fresh Steamed New Zealand Mussels ($18.00), Pan Seared Maryland Crab Cakes ($19.00), or the Grilled Shrimp & Guacamole ($23.00). If you are in the mood for a lighter start, consider the Beet Salad with oranges, goat cheese, and pistachios ($15.00) or the fresh Burrata with tomatoes, roasted peppers, olives, and balsamic glaze ($12.00).
The main courses showcase a balanced mix of land and sea. Seafood lovers can indulge in the Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna with ginger orange sauce ($29.00), Grilled Salmon With Mango Salsa ($29.00), or the classic Broiled Shrimp Scampi ($28.00). From the land, patrons can enjoy a Rib Eye Steak ($38.00), Grilled NY Sirloin Steak ($32.00), or a comforting, homemade Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf ($24.00). Pasta selections are also a highlight, including the signature The Starving Artist with orecchiette pasta, spinach, white beans, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella ($19.00), and the rich Fettuccine with shrimp, mussels and crabmeat in a spicy marinara sauce ($34.00).
No visit to The Black Whale is complete without exploring their legendary dessert options. The restaurant first started as a dessert shop in 1961 and continues to live up to that heritage. Options range from the decadent Hot Fudge Fondue ($18.00) and Crème Brulée ($9.00) to towering Ice Cream Sundaes, such as the classic Whale Of Sundae ($10.00). Their selection of Unique Potions like the Root Beer Float ($8.50) and Traditional Milkshake ($9.00) are perfect for a nostalgic treat.
In addition to the main dining room, the restaurant also features a bar onsite with a great selection of beer, cocktails, hard liquor, and wine. The atmosphere is consistently described as casual, cozy, and historic, with maritime artifacts and unique decor adding to its personality. The staff is known for their fast, accommodating, and friendly service, making every diner feel like a valued guest.
Whether you are a lifelong New Yorker or a visitor exploring the unique charm of the Bronx, The Black Whale offers a dining experience that perfectly captures the eclectic spirit of City Island. Its enduring appeal lies in the combination of its rich history, diverse and delicious menu, and a genuinely welcoming environment. This iconic spot has rightly earned its reputation as a Bronx culinary destination.
For New Yorkers seeking a dining location that is off the beaten path but still boasts an incredible atmosphere and menu, The Black Whale should be at the top of your list. It’s a versatile spot perfect for a lunch meeting, a romantic dinner, or a celebration with a large group.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Wonderful eclectic atmosphere with open space in the back. Great service and delicious food. A City Island treasure! Looking forward to sharing the experience with friends and family.
August 24 · Linda CaycedoI came here last night for my birthday with my friends. We had a great time. I called last minute for a table of ten then I changed my mind to sit out there. They were VERY accommodating. We loved the food, service, and drinks. The outside seating area is so unique. We’ll definitely be back!
July 07 · Cassandra MartinCozy atmosphere, meaning very small place. Think a living converted. In warmer weather there's an out door space at the back. Still warm cozy atmosphere. If you looking for an intimate setting this is it.Its a resturant so the food. For the price point.. on the fence. Guess city Island everything more expensive. Back to the food. The Salmon was good, the shrimp and pasta.. for the price.. on the fence.
April 27 · timi kaleNice cozy quiet family restaurant with gorgeous sea food and cocktails. Highly recommend!
June 23 · Vadim KokorenkoFirst time at this restaurant, service was amazing. The waitress was knowledge and very courteous! Her suggestions were spot on! Very cozy ambiance. My favorite dish was the shrimp pesto. Drinks were delish!Desserts spot on and cappuccino was perfect. Although this is not a steakhouse the NY strip was perfect, melted in your mouth! Will definitely frequent this restaurant.
