The Unusual Times Introduce
For New Jersey locals and travelers navigating the complex logistics of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), The Unusual Times offers a casual, full-service restaurant experience within the post-security area of Terminal B. As its name suggests, the establishment aims to provide a memorable, and perhaps slightly eccentric, dining experience, though customer reviews suggest its notoriety is often tied to the unique challenges of airport logistics and expectations. Primarily categorized as a Restaurant with a Full Bar, The Unusual Times is positioned to serve a comprehensive menu for all major mealtimes, including options for a quick, essential bite or a more relaxed meal with a drink before a flight.
The core concept of The Unusual Times revolves around a diverse, globally-influenced American bar food menu. This variety is evident in the menu blocks, which span from substantial breakfast options to international specialties and classic pub fare. Diners can start their day with a traditional Full English Breakfast or a quick Breakfast Sandwich. Later offerings include hearty Sandwiches and Paninis—such as the Short Rib Panini and the Garden State Gyro—alongside light options like Flatbreads and Salads, including the Salmon Cucumber Salad and the signature The Unusual Cobb. The name of the latter hints at a creative or unique spin on the classic American salad, serving as a signature dish.
Beyond the food, The Unusual Times functions as a full-service bar, offering a selection of Spirits (Gin, Vodka, Bourbon & Whiskey, Rum), Wines (Del Vento Pino), and a wide variety of Bottles & Cans, including domestic, imported, and craft beers and ciders like Heineken, Samuel Adams, Lagunitas IPA, and Angry Orchard Cider. This makes it an ideal spot for travelers who wish to relax with an alcoholic beverage after clearing security, contributing to its casual, bar-like atmosphere.
However, the customer experience, as revealed in reviews, is significantly impacted by its location within the airport ecosystem. While the menu promises a wide range of choices, customers have noted that the actual offerings available can be much more limited than what is listed on the paper menu, urging others to check the QR code/online menu for current availability. Furthermore, the dining system, which is common in EWR's post-security restaurants, often relies on scanning a QR code for ordering, which can sometimes lead to perceived waiting times and limited personal interaction with staff. Despite these logistical hurdles, the staff interaction has been positively noted, with one patron describing the barman/server as "friendly," suggesting a commitment to service even under demanding circumstances.
The target audience for The Unusual Times is primarily Tourists, but its accessible location and comprehensive menu make it a necessary and useful spot for local New Jersey users traveling out of EWR. It caters to all major dining options—Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert—and is particularly suitable for Solo dining, a common scenario for airport patrons. The commitment to accessibility is a key factor, ensuring that the establishment is prepared to welcome all guests passing through Terminal B.
In summary, The Unusual Times is an established dining and bar spot in EWR Terminal B that offers a highly diverse, American and globally-inspired menu, complete with a full-service bar. While operational constraints inherent to the airport environment may sometimes affect the full range of offerings, it remains a convenient and fully equipped option for travelers seeking a substantial meal or a pre-flight drink.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My family stopped here waiting for our flight to London. The establishment really lived up to its name “unusual times” the food was highly unusual indeed! A journey to hell for the tastebuds . The only unusual times was the waiting times and my food looked like it had been alive not 5 mins before it was served to me .the workers seem depressed to be there every day, times like these call for Google to add a 0 star option
August 25 · Ellikus MTLDR: If you can spare the time, eat at one of the eateries BEFORE you go through security at this airport because otherwise, you'll end up like me and have to choose between two of the lowest rated restaurants to ever be considered📝 The paper menu lists way more dishes than what they actually have to offer. Scan the QR code on the table to at least not be disappointed by the options they actually have-[BRISKET SANDWICH]Can't remember the exact price for this but it states on the online menu that it comes with a choice of fries or salad. They're fooling you as it only comes with extremely crunchy (stale?) chips. The brisket amount is a sizeable portion but tastes like the kind you get at Walmart where you just toss the plastic bag it comes in into a pot of hot water before serving... The bun also tastes like it came from Walmart as well-[WINGS]Can't recall the exact price but I mean....look at the size of those wings??? They look like they took the wings off of underdeveloped chickens :( Also, the wing sauce isn't actually even tossed onto the wings at all.Service was good though as the man tending bar was also the one who served us - he was friendly despite the fact that I'm sure he wishes he could work anywhere else but there 😅
April 13 · Claudia KThey are a pack of thieves. My mom and I went here for a quick brunch awaiting a flight from Newark Airport to Ottawa. The service was lousy and the tip reflected that. After looking at my credit card bill, they doubled the tip I had originally authorized. The woman who worked with us was Carmen. I always round my tipping so the final amount is a rounded number. She was given a tip of $5.72 and she bumped it up to $10. My bill came to $52.68 and she gave herself a $10 tip. I have a copy of the receipt (always keep your receipts). This kind of scam happens all the time.I will be calling in as this is theft and fraud. Do not eat here. You get mediocre food for a huge price point.
June 02 · Lev S.Worst airport experience. Tiny duty-free and barely any food options. The so-called restaurant — if you can even call it that — lives up to its name, “Unusual Time”: the food took an hour to arrive, right as boarding started. The “Classic American Burger” had nothing to do with an actual burger — dry, stiff bun, and completely off. I refused it and ended up buying a sad wrap at the overpriced kiosk.Save yourself the trouble: eat before you get here!
October 08 · Adit Adela FildermanIf you want cold food and rubbery fries, this is the place. Please tell me why your chicken pesto sandwich has the pesto spread into (soaked into) the bread?? It should’ve been on the chicken. It would’ve done something for the cold, dry chicken. At least the pesto had flavor.
