The menu is exhaustive, offering everything from traditional baked goods to massive main courses, ensuring there is a perfect option for any craving or time of day. This establishment is a must-try for any New Yorker looking for an authentic culinary experience that goes far beyond typical Latin American fare.
### Must-Try Authentic Guatemalan Dishes
A great place to start is with the appetizers, or Aperitivos. The Tacos Chapines / Guatemalan-Style Tacos are a signature item, offering a distinct flavor profile from their Mexican counterparts. For a hearty, fully loaded option, explore the Shuko sandwiches, such as the Shuko Maya York Con Salchicha, Bistec Y Longaniza, a gyro-style sandwich packed with sausage, steak, and Dominican sausage. Alternatively, the crispy Tostadas or the savory Garnachas provide excellent small plates perfect for sharing or a quick starter.
When it comes to the main event, the Especiales Diarios / Daily Specials section contains some of the most iconic Guatemalan dishes. The Churrasco Tikal / Tikal Skirt Steak is a celebrated plate, offering perfectly cooked meat with traditional sides. Perhaps the most famous is the Pepián De Gallina O Res / Chicken Or Beef Pepián, a rich, flavorful stew and one of Guatemala's national dishes, demonstrating the kitchen's mastery of complex, deep flavors. Other satisfying choices include the Carne Asada, Pollo Adobado / Marinated Chicken, or the comforting Sopa De Res / Beef Soup—true comfort food for any season.
### Breakfast, Baked Goods, and Beverages
New Yorkers know the importance of a great breakfast, and the Desayuno menu here is unparalleled. Options like the Desayuno Chapín or the Desayuno El Quetzalito offer a complete, traditional start to the day. For a lighter bite, the menu includes authentic baked goods, or Panadería, with unique items like Pan De Anís / Anise Bread, Cubilete, and Somanteca, all perfect with a cup of their fresh Coffee. Beyond the standard menu, the truly authentic experience is completed by the traditional drinks.
The selection of beverages is vast and traditional. The Aguas Frescas—such as Horchata, Jamaica / Hibiscus Flower Drink, and Tamarindo—are refreshing, non-alcoholic drinks perfect for washing down a rich meal. For something warmer and deeply traditional, the Atoles Calientes are a must-try. These thick, warming drinks, like Atole De Elote / Corn Atole or Atole Blanco De Masa / White Masa Atole, are cultural staples and a comforting dessert or morning treat. Finally, the colorful Granizadas / Slushies (in flavors like Lemon, Strawberry, and Hawaiian) provide a sweet, icy treat.
In summary, the sheer variety and unwavering commitment to authentic Guatemalan flavors and preparation are what make Tienda Guatemalteca El Quetzalito La Chapincita an essential culinary stop in Brooklyn. It’s an opportunity to taste a different side of Central American cuisine, offering unique dishes you simply won't find anywhere else in the same authentic way.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Stopped in hungry on Saturday. Had tamales, beef stew, and what seemed like a stuffed crepe. All were excellent!
April 02 · Tom Godfrey1. When you walk in, you wait for someone to arrive with the menu. It took more than 40 minutes for them to bring me the menu.2. I ordered two very good micheladas, but they arrived after 30 minutes, and to order food, I waited another 25 minutes. In the end, I was there for 3 hours to eat.The restaurant needs to get organized. People don't deserve to wait for hours. Try to have more staff. And you'll have more customers. Everyone is running around, sweating, and falling into the food. You need to be a little more organized and serve your customers better.
July 01 · Jayler DensBad service and I've never seen dogs given lettuce and lettuce that isn't washed tastes bitter.
September 14 · Raquel GonzálezI bought a tamale in the morning, the recado leaves a lot to be desired, it seems like they are leftovers from other dishes. Besides, they gave me the tamale raw, the staff is terrible, they only tell you “what a shame, I can’t do anything about it” or they just listen but say nothing, this is not the first time this has happened to me, if it isn’t the tortillas in bad condition, oh, they don’t take your order well, sometimes they also charge you more since the workers only guess prices of things. I also ordered a “SHUCO MIXTO” and as far as I know the shuco is made of bread and they give me a tortilla?? Isn’t that a “MIXED”? They should inform their employees a little more, then I try to place an order by phone and ask for something that is on their menu that says “ALL DAY” and the girls tell you they don’t have it, I ask for something else and tell them I need to pay by card and the girl tells me “the person who knows how to charge by card is not here now, please call later” are you serious?? Don't they even know how to take an order and make a card transaction? Wow, this is too much! Definitely don't spend your money here. It's a total failure. 🤢
August 29 · Julissa RamosI ordered some stuffed chiles, and they sent them to me in bad condition, and I really don't know how they send food like that,
