African restaurant ★4.0

891 Clinton Ave, Irvington, NJ 07111, USA

4.0
For my first time here I think I’m going to make it my last.to start I ordered 2 meals and one bowl off rice to go( jollof rice with goat meat, fufu and spinach soup, and just plain jollof rice no meat) for a grand total of 53.31..the jollof rice and 2 pieces of goat meat 25 dollars the rice had no flavor and tasted burnt and smelled burnt, the goat was only fat and bones.the fufu was regular and spinach soup was dry surprisingly for being soup. Everything was nasty tasteless and dry to be “AUTHENTIC” African food it didn’t live up to the standards of taste that I’m used to - Roman Ali

9JABUKA Introduce

For those in New Jersey seeking an authentic, flavorful, and deeply satisfying culinary journey, 9JABUKA African Restaurant in Irvington offers an essential taste of West Africa. This local eatery specializes in high-quality Nigerian cuisine, transporting diners to the Motherland with every carefully prepared dish. Known for serving complex, traditional recipes that often take hours to perfect, 9JABUKA provides a crucial link to authentic African cooking right in the heart of the 07111 community.

The essence of the restaurant lies in its vibrant and extensive menu, which focuses heavily on traditional stews, rice dishes, and soups served with "swallow" accompaniments—staples of West African dining. It’s a place where comfort food is served with a high level of expertise, making it a popular choice for both everyday Lunch and more intentional Dinner experiences. The atmosphere is described as Casual, Cozy, and Quiet, fostering an environment where friends, Groups, and individuals can comfortably enjoy their meal, making it an excellent spot for Solo dining as well.

As a restaurant that Serves local specialty, 9JABUKA caters to a knowledgeable clientele, which explains the passionate—and sometimes sharply critical—nature of customer feedback. When the kitchen is hitting its stride, the food is highly praised; one loyal customer noted, "The food reminds me of the motherland Nigeria," recommending the Efo-Riro and declaring the Jollof Rice "practically the best Jollof in Newark." This commitment to authentic flavor is what drives a dedicated customer base, including families and friends who are willing to travel from far corners of New Jersey to repeat the experience.

However, the highly specialized nature of the cuisine means high standards are expected. It is factual to note that some reviews express disappointment, citing a lack of flavor or issues with consistency, such as meat being mostly "fat and bones." As with many highly popular, authentic, and high-volume takeout spots, delivering complex, deeply flavored food to every single customer without exception can be a challenge. We encourage new customers in Irvington to explore the most popular items, especially the specialty soups, to fully appreciate the authentic flavors that keep a loyal community coming back to 9JABUKA time and again.

The culinary goal here is not merely to feed but to showcase the depth and variety of Nigerian gastronomy. Dishes are rich in history and flavor, offering something completely different from the average suburban dining experience. This focus on tradition is what makes 9JABUKA a celebrated cultural and culinary hub in the New Jersey region.
