Tucked away on Hughes Avenue, just steps from the famed Arthur Avenue in the heart of the Belmont neighborhood, this family-owned bakery has been operating for over 80 years, since the 1930s. Spanning three generations, the Addeo family heritage of being a premiere maker of traditional Italian breads and biscuits has been faithfully carried forward by the founders' grandsons, Thomas and Laurence.
Addeo & Sons Bakery stands out among the Bronx's embarrassment of riches when it comes to Italian bakeries, specifically for its unwavering focus on a sheer variety of loaves and its steadfast commitment to traditional, time-tested baking processes. While you will find a small selection of delightful treats like cookies and biscotti, the soul of this establishment lies in its incredible bread. Customers consistently describe the bread as "life-changing," noting the perfectly crisp crust and the soft, pillowy interior—the hallmark of truly authentic Italian baking.
This bakery is a true low-tech, old-school New York Italian experience, where the aroma of freshly baked goods fills the air and customers appreciate the dedication to classic techniques. It's the kind of place where local families have been coming for decades, upholding a beloved tradition that defines the authentic Little Italy atmosphere. It’s a cherished gem that offers a nostalgic trip back to a time when quality and tradition were the only ingredients that mattered. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor seeking the 'real' Little Italy experience, Addeo & Sons Bakery provides an essential culinary stop that encapsulates the rich, flavorful history of the Bronx.
The cornerstone of their reputation is the simple, honest dedication to fresh, natural ingredients, prepared the way they were taught decades ago. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Passed by many times and finally had opportunity to walk through the door. So glad I did. 😊😊Place looks homey. Very clean & inviting. Mostly fresh baked breads for sale. I did see some cookies for $15 per lb. Grabbed a 1/4 lb for $3.75. Lots of cookies for the money. 👍👍Really enjoyed the cookies & experience. Need to return for the breads.
September 01 · Frugal CyclistThe best Bakery in the Neighborhood. The Italian Baguette is my go to buy, which stays soft for a few days. The Olive bread however is must to try and have at every party.
May 16 · Erick AscencioMy family loves coming here and have for years. The bread is always fresh. Crisp crust and soft and.pullowy on the inside. Pizza dough is excellent too.Don't change a thing Addeo's - because it's good!
January 18 · Todd RussoFresh, fresh, fresh, & “homemade” this little bakery offers great breads in the style of a bygone era. Well made, as if your grandma made them. Definitely visit this bakery and try whatever they recommend... part of the experience is it’s low key aesthetic, situated on a quiet sleepy NYC corner. * the cookies are also tasty
August 06 · Le RétoirThis is the finest bread bakery in NYC! Every loaf of their traditional Italian bread as well as their specialty breads are fantastic. This is the bakery of my youth, I'm now 70, and anytime I return to the Bronx we stop to load up on their bread. We buy a bunch of traditional Italian breads to freeze - except for the loaf that doesn't make it home as it was broken and devoured in the car, plus several of their specialty breads. We especially like their lardon bread, tomato bread and olive bread. But the truth is that I could live on their bread sticks! Plain or with a little butter they are a taste of heaven. I grew up in da Bronx and Addeo's is a taste of heaven!
