Choosing African Pot with Temmy is about choosing an authentic and substantial West African culinary experience right here in New Jersey. For both newcomers to Nigerian cuisine and those craving the tastes of home, the menu offers several dishes that are absolutely worth prioritizing.
The first recommendation is always the celebrated Jollof Rice ($17.00). This iconic West African dish of rice cooked in a rich tomato, pepper, and spice mixture is a cornerstone of the cuisine and a benchmark for any African restaurant. Pairing it with a side of chicken or turkey is highly recommended for a truly complete plate. Similarly, the Fried Rice ($17.00) offers a flavorful, spiced alternative.
For a taste of traditional Nigerian gastronomy, exploring the "Swallow" dishes is essential. The Egusi or Efo Riro (a vegetable soup/stew) are excellent choices ($17.00 each), and are traditionally eaten by hand with a starchy side like Amala or Pounded Yam (often referred to as 'Swallow'). This is the true essence of Nigerian comfort food and is incredibly filling. A regional delicacy to try is Pepper Soup ($15.00), known for its clear, intensely spiced, and aromatic broth, often featuring goat meat or fish—perfect for a cold New Jersey evening.
For those seeking a lighter bite or a shared appetizer, the Suya ($15.00)—spicy, thinly sliced grilled meat—is a popular street food and a house specialty that delivers a powerful flavor punch. Also, don't miss out on the sweet, pillowy soft Puff puff ($2.00) for a perfect dessert or snack. While some customer feedback notes the need for careful attention to preparation, particularly for dietary needs like shellfish allergies, the overall consensus remains that the meat items are consistently good, and the restaurant delivers authentic, flavorful food. For an authentic and hearty African meal in Newark, African Pot with Temmy remains a highly sought-after local favorite.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My boyfriend has always loved their food and the meat items are always good. But veggie orders are not great. Ordered okra and came with shrimp pieces, I am allergic to shrimp. Luckily I found it after few bites so I was able to manage.
February 17 · Tashi LamaIf I could give 0 starts I would. Thos food is absolutely disgusting. We ordered the stew chicken with rice and plantains. Plantains didn't come rice is dry and too spicy. And yall can see the chicken which is 1 turkey wing cut into 3 pieces. 17.99 for this. What a Joke. Don't get me started about the lady who answers the phone RUDE.
August 21 · Dym KeyesThis is very sad , i mean very sad. If you do not know how to make a specialty Nigerian meal, STOP and go learn. First time ordering designer stew and white rice from this restaurant , in all honesty the designer stew was 95% water , no chunk stew to eat with , literally poured the designer stew on the rice and WELP all sunk under the plate. And they charged $20 for this , this is so sad. Stop making special meals if you are not capable. How do you eat designer stew at its watery state?? Literally had to stop eating and dump out in the garbage. And it has ZERO spiciness , like are you kidding me ?! What a shame.
November 27 · Babatunde SowemimoThe pepper soup portion is too small and also filled with bones and fatty meat . I didn’t enjoy it at all
December 28 · Deborah OrenaiyaThe dish cover is broken the soup ain’t even the correct order. At this point it even ain’t a soup coz there’s too little of soup.
