Choosing Au Cheval for your next meal in New York City is a decision you won't regret, thanks to its combination of exceptional food, unique atmosphere, and outstanding service. The most compelling reason to visit is, of course, the food. The reputation of their double cheeseburger is well-deserved; it’s widely considered one of the best in the city. The careful preparation and quality of ingredients, from the house-made bologna to the maple-crusted thick-cut bacon, elevate these dishes far beyond typical pub fare. But the menu is not a one-trick pony; the fried chicken sliders are phenomenal, the steak frites are perfectly executed, and the salads are fresh and flavorful. The desserts, like the famous Chocolate Cream Pie, offer a perfect end to the meal.
The experience is enhanced by the restaurant's distinct atmosphere. The downstairs bar area has a cozy, speakeasy-like feel, perfect for a more intimate or relaxed dining experience, while the upstairs dining room is brighter and more energetic. This dual ambiance allows you to choose the vibe that best suits your mood. The bar is a destination in itself, with a fantastic cocktail menu that has received rave reviews for its quality and creativity. The commitment to a friendly and attentive staff ensures that even with a crowd, you feel well-cared for. They have a knack for making you feel welcomed and valued, whether you're a first-time visitor or a regular.
Furthermore, the restaurant's inclusive and welcoming nature makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of patrons, including groups, families, and solo diners. The fact that they accept reservations is a major plus, as it helps to mitigate the long waits that are common at such a popular spot. While walk-ins are possible, especially at the bar, planning ahead is always a good idea. In a city filled with countless dining options, Au Cheval stands out by delivering on its promise of high-quality, flavorful food in a memorable setting, making it a truly worthwhile choice for any New Yorker or visitor.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We showed up early and despite the busy crowds, they did their best to sit us early. We were lucky to land a seat at the bar and decided to stay. The bartender was super friendly and attentive. We shared the famous burger, Mac n cheese, and salad. The bacon was a star in the dishes, with a yummy maple crust. We really enjoyed the corkscrew noodles and creamy white cheddar sauce to the Mac. We enjoyed the bar vibe downstairs a little more. Quieter and calmer. Upstairs is more lovely, bright, cute half booth seating. Would recommend!
September 08 · Meagan EricksonFinally made it to Au Cheval, and the burger was as great as I expected. We sat in the lower level bar area, which was actually very nice, the space had a speakeasy vibe. The main dining room upstairs is brighter and a lot busier. The cocktail menu has several nice options, the vesper martini was and vodka lemonade were excellent. The fried chicken sliders were phenomenal, reminded me of fast food chicken sandwich (in the best way possible, not meant as a dig). And of course, the burger with the bacon and egg and a side of fries was excellent, the NY strip was also great.Reservations are highly recommended, early walk-ins may have a chance at the bar.Hope to visit again soon.
September 01 · Chris PI walked in during lunchtime and a Sunday at 1300 with no reservations and was able to be seated at the bar with zero wait. The server and bartender were so amazing. They are very fast, and extremely attentive. The service overall was amazing! For my main meal, I got the double cheeseburger and paid extra for the egg and the bacon. This burger does not come with fries, but you really don’t need it because it’s very filling. Then for dessert, I ordered the raspberry sorbet, strawberry ice cream, and salted caramel ice cream. If you are able to get a seat at the bar, you can watch the bartender make drinks and the cooks make the food as well. The restaurant is dark and moody and buzzing with life. The bathrooms are downstairs and are very clean.
September 01 · Tashalee BillingsI went to Au Cheval in New York and it was amazing! The wait was only about 15 minutes, and it was definitely worth it. I had the double cheeseburger and fries — the burger was perfectly juicy and flavorful, and the fries were crispy and delicious.Definitely one of my favorite burgers in town — highly recommend! 🍔🍟
September 11 · Ahmad AlfilimbanyThis place is as good as its reputation. I did not have the burger. Not really a burger guyMy friends had it and liked it. But to me a burger isn't that exciting. Had the French dip which was very good. The stars of the show were the salad and sides. The chopped wedge was amazing. One of the truly great salads in nyc. The Mac and cheese and broccoli sides were top notch. The chocolate pie was delicious as was an off menu raspberry sorbet. Our server was as good as you can expect. Truly lovely and helpful. I will definitely return here.
