Bemelmans Bar Introduce
In a city that is constantly evolving, there are certain places that hold onto the glamour and timeless charm of a bygone era. Located in the heart of Manhattan's exclusive Upper East Side, Bemelmans Bar is one such establishment. More than just a place to grab a drink, it is a living piece of New York history, nestled within the prestigious Carlyle Hotel. This bar offers a unique experience that transcends the usual night out, providing a journey into a world of artistic brilliance, classic elegance, and live music. For New Yorkers and visitors who appreciate a refined atmosphere and a sense of history, Bemelmans Bar is an iconic destination that deserves a spot on your must-visit list.
The bar is named in honor of Ludwig Bemelmans, the celebrated author and illustrator of the beloved Madeline children's books. In a remarkable bit of history, Bemelmans painted the whimsical murals that adorn the walls in exchange for 18 months of accommodations at The Carlyle for himself and his family. These hand-painted murals, featuring playful scenes of Central Park, are the only surviving public commission of his work and serve as the centerpiece of the bar’s decor. The ambiance is further enhanced by the luxurious Art Deco design, including chocolate-brown leather banquettes, nickel-trimmed tables, and a ceiling covered in 24-karat gold leaf. This exquisite combination of art and decor creates a cozy, romantic, and upscale atmosphere that is truly unforgettable.
While the bar's prices may be a reflection of its exclusive location and historical significance, many patrons view the cost as an entry fee to an unparalleled experience. It's a place where the atmosphere and the history are as much of the draw as the drinks themselves. This article will delve into all the key aspects of Bemelmans Bar, from its convenient location and accessibility to its impressive offerings and unique features. Whether you are considering it for a special occasion or simply want to learn more about one of New York's most famous watering holes, the following sections will provide a comprehensive and factual guide to this legendary establishment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We wanted to go to this bar for years. Once we finally did - it was a major disappointment! The ambiance was very nice, but nothing else beyond it. The snacks were terrible - nuts were stale and moldy, the chips tasteless. Martinis (what the bar is famous for) were strong (so they are definitely not holding back on alcohol), but it was the warmest martini I have had in Manhattan, which is definitely not the standard you expect. Oysters were fresh, but not particularly tasty, and the shrimp cocktail was underwhelming, especially for the price they charge for 4 pieces of shrimp. Would not recommend or go back.
July 28 · Nataliya PylypivStopped at Bemelmans Bar after the Met. Dress code enforced, no shorts, no flip flops, collared shirt after 5:30 p.m. Nearly turned away, managed to slip in. Ordered a martini listed around $30, but with tax and tip the tab reached $50. Pricey, yes, but here it feels like the cost of admission to a piece of living history. Live piano in the corner, golden light on the leather banquettes, and walls covered with whimsical murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of Madeline. He painted them in exchange for eighteen months of room and board at The Carlyle. This bar is the only public place where his art still lives. The whole scene feels like stepping into Old New York, glamorous and timeless. Five stars for history and vibe, not for value.
September 01 · trang ngoBest Martini I’ve had in New York. There was a bit of a line to get in on a Saturday afternoon, but I think the experience matched the expectation. We were seated at the bar which was great for having a couple drinks and some snacks and enjoying conversation. The lounge area was lively, yet still felt really intimate. I had definitely been wanting to try this place for a while, given its reputation as classic upper east side haunt, and it lived up. It was a great stop on our afternoon exploring Central Park and the met.
May 13 · Christopher BrahimOn my bucket list as a life long NYer. We went on a random Sunday after after a museum. Had a lovely chat with an Australian at the bar. Loved the murals and the atmosphere. It's pricey so be aware!
September 14 · MOira DolanBemelmans Bar has a nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere that feels timeless. The walls are covered with charming artwork, adding a unique and whimsical touch.Live jazz music was soothing, and the pianist was happy to take requests.Even visiting alone, I felt completely relaxed and welcome.I’d love to come back again soon.
