Bakery, Cafe ★4.0

The Bakery is nice. However as a Haitian-based Bakery, I expect more Haitian sweets and treats (ie. coconut drops). They have the Chokola Ayisyen I've been craving, but the other pastries are too American. It needs a touch of the Caribbean in the mix besides just the Name and Slogan, Hot Chocolate, and maybe a few other Haitian things I have yet to focus on.My next concern is the Cashier. They don't know what they are selling nor are they trained in making a sale properly. I feel like the owner should take the time to create a menu with product description, price, and allergy concerns as well as have the cashier inspect what is in each product so the customers can feel more confident in their purchase. My Big brother and I are from the print shop across the street and have been very perceptive on Bon's business development. As a Communication Designer myself, I see many opportunities for the owner to expand and reorganize on the backend. They're location address is wrong at this time. They're located at 1415 not 1407 - Megan Gelin

Features / Highlights

The true star of Bon Bonbon is its authentically Haitian-influenced menu. While a traditional patisserie might focus on croissants and macarons, this bakery delivers hearty, well-spiced Caribbean flavors that have earned it a loyal following in Brooklyn.

Key culinary and operational highlights include:

  • World-Class Haitian Patties: The Haitian Patties are arguably the most lauded item on the menu. Customers consistently praise them for being exceptionally flaky and filled with tasty, well-flavored meat. Popular fillings include Beef and Herring, confirming that this is the place in the borough to experience one of Haiti's most beloved savory pastries. These flaky pockets are ideal for a fulfilling lunch or a quick, savory bite.
  • Savory Haitian Comfort Dishes: Beyond the patties, Bon Bonbon serves authentic Haitian main dishes and sides. The Griot (fried pork chunks) is described as nicely flavored, and the legumes (a traditional stewed vegetable dish) are a hearty, satisfying choice. For those ordering a meal, the recommendation to get the sides of mais (often a corn-based dish) and sauce pois (a rich, savory bean sauce) to complement the rice is a testament to the depth of the menu.
  • Authentic Haitian Sweets and Drinks: The bakery takes pride in its traditional desserts and beverages, giving it that vital Caribbean 'touch' a local user craves. These include the craveable Chokola Ayisyen (Haitian Hot Chocolate or cocoa), traditional Haitien Bread / Pain Ayisyen ($5.00), light, crumbly Bonbon Amidon - Haitien Starch Cookies ($4.00), and the spiced Bonbon Sirop - Haitien Gingerbread Cookie ($6.00). Customers can also find refreshing, tropical juices and Kola Ayisyen (Haitian soda).
  • The Blend of Cultures: While some traditionalists might wish for a wider variety of specific Haitian treats like coconut drops, the current selection strikes a balance. It offers recognizable treats alongside deep, cultural staples, making it an accessible entry point to the cuisine for new patrons while satisfying the cravings of long-time devotees.
  • Focus on Community and Growth: The establishment has been the subject of keen local observation, with neighborhood patrons noticing the business's development and potential. Although one review highlighted opportunities for improving staff training and menu clarity—suggestions to create a detailed menu with product descriptions, prices, and allergy information—this feedback simply points toward a business with significant room for positive growth and deeper connection with its Brooklyn customer base.
  • Perfect for a Quick Stop: Its identification as a great place for a Quick visit makes it an excellent daily resource for those living or working in the Flatbush area, whether for a morning coffee run or a midday grab-and-go meal.
