Colony Grill - Stamford Introduce
For residents of Connecticut, and especially those in the Stamford area, the name Colony Grill evokes a distinct and delicious local specialty. Far more than just a pizza place, Colony Grill - Stamford is a true local institution and the original location for the iconic 'Hot Oil Bar Pie'. Established in 1935, this historic restaurant offers a casual, cozy, and welcoming atmosphere that has made it a community cornerstone for nearly a century.
What began as a post-Prohibition tavern in an Irish immigrant neighborhood—affectionately called 'the Colony'—has evolved into a destination famous for its one-of-a-kind, razor-thin crust pizza. While the 'Grill' name remains a nod to its heritage, the focus today is entirely on this singular menu item and its signature, spicy 'hot oil' topping. This unique pizza style, designed specifically as a 'bar pie' to fit neatly alongside a drink on a narrow bar top, is a must-try for any local or visitor seeking an authentic taste of Connecticut's diverse pizza scene.
The establishment's commitment to quality, its rich history, and its community-focused spirit—evident in its Wall of Heroes—contribute to an experience that feels both traditional and uniquely local. It’s a place where groups, families with children (high chairs are available), college students, and long-time locals all gather for a quick bite or a relaxed dinner.
The original Colony Grill is conveniently located at 172 Myrtle Ave, Stamford, CT 06902. Situated right in Stamford, it is easily accessible for residents across Fairfield County and beyond.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I went on a very busy night and was greeted and seated quickly. My server saw me in uniform and asked if i needed a rush on my food as i was on a quick lunch break. I was amazed with the service standards because thats how a restaurant should be run. The pizza was really good.
September 02 · Danielson5/5 for the pizza itself. Reasonably priced, delicious, and definitely in my personal top 10... maybe even top 5.The pizza has more in common with midwest/chicago 'tavern pizza' (thinner crust but still had a decent chew, not crackers like).Good selection of beers both "standard" and local draft.100% is a "coming here again" next time I am in the area
August 01 · E. M.25 years ago we were lucky enough to live near Colony Grill and it was delicious then! But we were young and hadn’t eaten 🍕 around the world! We came back! Yup, still the best damn pizza EVER!Thin crust, firm though and everything, the sauce, the cheese, is in perfect balance! And you do t have a bloat belly on after!
August 06 · RuchikaOrdered through DoorDash my pizza arrived completely burnt and rock hard - I selected charred and well done in the customization settings which I haven’t done before but didn't realize it means totally burnt! Normally a colony lover but this was totally disappointing :(
August 23 · NatashaRarely do I leave reviews. There’s enough yapping out there anyway. This place, however?…….killer.Great beers. Great service. Great pizza. That’s the key too. They focus their talents on one thing…….great pizza. No 5 page oversized menu with a bunch of mediocre dishes. Concise and coherent. I ordered a pizza with a bunch of toppings and where it’s usually soggy and floppy, this thing held its own. Crispy and delicious with every bite. Friendly staff great atmosphere and I loved the music even the stuff I didn’t like.
