DOMODOMO New York rises to that challenge, establishing itself as a premier destination for sushi lovers seeking something beyond the ordinary. Located on the border of SoHo and Greenwich Village, this Japanese restaurant has garnered a reputation for its innovative approach, particularly with its signature handroll courses. It has been recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a testament to its commitment to high-quality food at a reasonable value. This article will provide you with a detailed overview of what makes DOMODOMO a truly special spot in New York City's vibrant culinary scene, from its unique offerings to its impeccable service.
DOMODOMO has become a beloved spot for those who appreciate both traditional Japanese techniques and a modern, creative twist. While they serve excellent sushi and sashimi, their specialty lies in the handrolls, which are a true highlight of the menu. Guests can opt for a "DOMOKASE" tasting course, a curated selection of sushi and handrolls that allows you to experience the best of what the kitchen has to offer without the high price tag of a traditional omakase restaurant. The freshness of the ingredients is consistently praised, with one reviewer noting that "every bite felt special." The chefs' attention to detail and the beautiful presentation of each dish demonstrate a high level of artistry. The atmosphere is an integral part of the experience; the space is described as trendy, cozy, and romantic, making it ideal for a special night out. The dim lighting and sleek decor create an intimate setting that is perfect for couples or small groups.
Beyond the exceptional food and ambiance, DOMODOMO is also celebrated for its outstanding service. The staff is consistently described as "super attentive" and "friendly," going above and beyond to ensure a perfect dining experience. This level of hospitality, combined with the fast service, means that even on a busy night, you feel well taken care of. The restaurant's popularity means that a wait is common, particularly for dinner, which is why reservations are highly recommended. This is a clear indicator of its status as a go-to spot for locals who know that the quality is well worth the planning. DOMODOMO strikes an impressive balance, offering a dining experience that feels upscale and special without being overly formal or pretentious. It is, as one fan put it, "at least one or two notches above the regular generic sushi spots," offering incredible value without compromising on quality.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm a fan of this spot. It's definitely incredible value without compromising on quality. Ordered the sushi & handroll course and it was excellent. It's not the same caliber of sushi that you would get at a fancy omakase restaurant, but it's for sure at least one or two notches above the regular generic sushi spots. The staff is super attentive too. Would recommend if you're in the neighborhood.
September 20 · Khoi PhamHad an amazing experience at Domodomo! The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor✨Every bite felt special! I especially loved how beautifully everything was prepared. The atmosphere is stylish, making it perfect for a night out. On top of that, the service was outstanding. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect.Definitely a spot I’ll come back to!
July 19 · Vera KimI came to DOMODOMO with high expectations, especially since it has received Michelin recognition for several years in a row. Unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing.I ordered several hand rolls, including Spicy Salmon with ichimi and fried potato chips, Salmon with sesame seed, Spicy Yellowtail with furikake and lime pepper, Negi Toro with scallion, Oyster Mushroom with seaweed crunch, Miso Black Cod with kabocha purée and pickled mustard seed, Blue Crab with garlic butter and mayo, and the Lobster roll. On paper, the combinations sounded creative and exciting, but the execution was a letdown. Every hand roll I received came wrapped in seaweed that was soft and soggy rather than crisp. Because the seaweed had been exposed to air for too long, the texture and freshness were completely gone. A proper hand roll should have warm rice, fresh filling, and crispy seaweed that cracks when you bite into it — here, none of that was present, and the flavors completely fell flat.I also tried the Eggplant Katsu, which was very heavy and oily. The breading absorbed too much oil, and without dipping it into the sauce provided, it was nearly inedible. It lacked the delicate balance that this dish should have. As for sushi, I sampled one piece, and the vinegar flavor in the rice was overwhelmingly strong. The balance between rice and fish was missing, and the fish itself didn’t shine at all. For a restaurant that has held Michelin recognition, I was genuinely surprised by how weak the flavors were. The only positives were the good service and pleasant atmosphere. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the space itself has a nice modern vibe. However, when the food doesn’t deliver, it’s hard to overlook everything else. I honestly don’t understand how this restaurant continues to receive Michelin accolades year after year.Overall, I left feeling disappointed and would not return. I was expecting a standout hand roll experience, but instead, I found myself questioning the reputation of the restaurant. If anyone is a fan of DOMODOMO, I would truly appreciate recommendations on what to order, because based on my experience, none of the dishes lived up to the hype.
August 23 · Nitiphum S.Awful service and fishy sushi. Hostess refused to seat us claiming there were no openings and said nothing when I made the reservation on resy and got the same table she said wasn’t open. The waitress gave us our water 10m after being seated then didn’t take our order for another 15m. The couple next to us came after us and was out before us. She was very attentive and talkative with the other patrons, but aside from asking us how everything was, she didn’t give us the same energy. She placed the platter of sushi on top of our soy sauce saucer and didn’t acknowledge it. As we tried to clean it up as it got all over our seats, she passed by and gave us an extra napkin (singular) and took away one of the dirty ones. She made no attempt to clean up the mess she made or offer us a new chair that wasn’t dripping in soy sauce. Every piece of salmon was extremely fishy. The rest of the sushi was truly so lackluster and clearly not worth the price. The pieces were smaller than the rice and for the price, I expected a much larger amount piece for each. Aside from the appetizers and udon, nothing lived up to the hype. Expensive prices for such small portions and bad quality fish. Not surprised they didn’t win the bib again. She also offered every other table dessert, but just gave us our check and walked away without saying a word. Will not return.
August 30 · NoorHad a great dinner here last night! The octopus appetizer was really well done - tender and not chewy at all, with nice charred flavor. Good start to the meal.Sushi was fresh and high quality. The tuna was buttery, salmon was clean tasting, but branzino was my best pick. You can tell they know what they’re doing with the fish. Also got some hand rolls - the uni one was creamy and rich, and they had an interesting wagyu roll that actually worked really well. Nori was crisp.Everything was nicely presented and tasted great. It’s on the pricier side but the quality matches. Service was good too.Would go back for sure, especially for the sushi. Good spot for a nice dinner out.
