Guatemalan restaurant ★4.0 (41)·$10–20

4.0
So hubby and I are always looking for small, quaint, reasonably priced restaurants to venture out too on our weekly excursions. Unfortunately, I haven’t had anything to really write about up until yesterday. This little mom and Pop joint is the bomb at first when you walk in it’s small yet clean has some unique decor and I was confused as to whether it was Salvadoran or Guatemalan. In any event as soon as we walked in, we were serviced right away. The menus were simple, but had quite a bit of intriguing dishes to choose from. I ordered a dish containing skirt steak, beef rib, pork and shrimp. It was out of this world. The portions were hearty and the meal itself was on point. Don’t even get me started on the Pupusas 🫓 HOLY SMOKES, they were amazing! I’m a Pupusa connoisseur, so they had to come correct and that they did. Hubby wasn’t feeling too adventurous and ordered a hamburger and fries which he said was pretty good. The hamburger automatically came with avocado, onions, lettuce, and bacon, simple yet right up his alley. If you’re in the area and looking for a quaint yet, flavorful mom and Pop joint definitely stop by this place.I usually always have a negative because I like to keep it real, But I really don’t have one. Ok, the hot water in the bathroom doesn’t work, but they had soap and a nice painting on the wall that made up for it. Definitely check this place out! - Vannessa Negron

While the menu offers something for everyone, the following items and features are highly recommended by satisfied customers and based on the restaurant's known specialties:

For an authentic and satisfying experience, you absolutely must try the Pupusas. These thick, stuffed corn tortillas have earned high praise from a self-identified "Pupusa connoisseur" and are a fantastic example of the regional food. The restaurant also has a reputation for its Desayunos Chapín, making it an ideal destination for a traditional, filling Central American breakfast or brunch.

Even simple items are prepared with quality and care; the hamburger was elevated with fresh additions like avocado and bacon, proving their commitment to quality ingredients across the board.

Do not leave without sampling the acclaimed Great coffee. As a featured highlight, the coffee is likely a rich, authentic brew—perhaps utilizing beans from the famous coffee-growing regions of Guatemala—that perfectly complements the rich flavors of the food. It is also highly recommended to try a local drink like the tamarind drink, often a staple in Central American eateries. Finally, embrace the atmosphere; the unique, cozy decor provides a beautiful backdrop for your meal. Simply choose seating away from the television if you are sensitive to the on-screen entertainment, a minor but noted detail by one guest. Overall, El Bambu represents a flavorful, affordable, and highly authentic culinary journey that New Yorkers in the region should certainly check out.
