Freddy's Bar Introduce
Welcome to Freddy's Bar & Backroom, a truly unique Brooklyn staple that embodies the unpretentious, creative, and resilient spirit of New York City. Housed at 627 5th Avenue in Park Slope, this venue is far more than just a bar and grill; it is a cultural and community hub with a history that spans nearly a century, dating all the way back to the Prohibition era. For New Yorkers in search of an authentic experience—one that blends classic dive bar charm with a cutting-edge performance art scene—Freddy's is an essential destination.
Freddy's original location in Prospect Heights stood for eighty years, serving as a neighborhood landmark and, eventually, the focal point of a highly publicized seven-year battle against the eminent domain process of the Atlantic Yards development (now the Barclays Center). Despite the forced relocation, the spirit of the old Freddy's was not lost. The owners, determined to maintain the bar's unique identity, meticulously salvaged and transplanted many of the original fixtures and decor to the new space in Park Slope. This relocation was not just a move; it was a resurrection, breathing new life into a beloved institution that the community fought fiercely to save.
Today, the new Freddy's Bar & Backroom has found its footing and continues its legacy as a welcoming "creative adult playground," as one co-owner describes it. The atmosphere is cozy, casual, and refreshingly unique, drawing in a diverse crowd of artists, writers, intellectuals, and long-time Brooklynites. It’s a place where you can grab a comfortable, high-backed wooden stool, settle in for a great beer or cocktail, and witness the constant parade of artistic expression happening nightly in the backroom.
The front room maintains the cherished dive bar aesthetic, complete with dark wood interiors, old-school booths, and famously quirky decor—including a fish tank with an albino frog, a marlin, and other whimsical salvaged items. This commitment to preserving the eclectic charm of the original spot, right down to the chains of justice attached to the mahogany bar as a metaphor for community strength, ensures that the historical narrative of this legendary spot continues to resonate with every visitor.
But the experience extends far beyond the drinks. Freddy's offers a robust menu of classic comfort food and bar favorites, served throughout the day, making it a reliable spot for a casual lunch, dinner, or late-night bite.
Freddy's Bar & Backroom is conveniently located in South Park Slope, Brooklyn, just one lovely block from the subway, making it easily accessible for anyone in the New York City area. Its presence on 5th Avenue helps anchor the southern stretch of Park Slope’s vibrant bar and restaurant culture. The neighborhood location is perfect for those seeking an authentic Brooklyn experience away from the heavy foot traffic of Manhattan, though its national reputation certainly attracts a steady stream of curious tourists and former locals returning home.
Located at 627 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA, the venue is committed to welcoming all members of the community. In terms of accessibility, the premises offer a wheelchair-accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible seating, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. For drivers, both free street parking and paid street parking options are available nearby. Pet owners will be happy to know that dogs are allowed outside in the outdoor function area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Excellent dive bar from the Prohibition Era. Wood bar and booth. Cool decor. Awesome play list. A backroom. Serves typical bar food. Dark yet lit by red lights. Bartenders are no nonsense but friendly provided you aren't an asshole.A great place to get drunk.
December 13 · John AavedalFantastic dark moody bar vibe that is hard to find anymore. Loved the dark wood interior, cool and weird objects that decorate the place. Back room for group events and performances. Angela at the bar was amazing!
June 19 · Jennifer Watters FarleyI went to celebrate my friend’s birthday we sat at the bar, and my friend’s husband had a water cup from another place and was kicked out for that, my friend went up to the lady to ask why was her husband being kicked out from the place and this lady told her do you want to be next? And came to us and grab our drinks it was me and another friend, so rude and disrespectful. My friends husband had no problem with throwing the cup, but she kicked him out didnt even asked. I ve been at this place before and the guy at the bar, the bartender is lovely, but this big woman should not be working here!
July 19 · ivon chayaResponding to the review left by Ivon Chaya that they left on Sunday, July 20th. I was there the night this incident happenedwhich was Friday, July 18th, and their review is full of lies! When this group came in, the gentleman came with a pint glass, ( not plastic cup. Etc), full of a liquid that was not issued by any of the bartenders at Freddy's. The bartender that had just got off shift, approached the group and asked about the glass. She then informed them that they were in a place with a full bar and bringing outside drinks was frowned upon. The group then immediately became hostile towards the bartender and caused a scene. The bartender then informed them they could leave if they didn't want to be compliant. Cursing issued from the party. They never sat at the bar but at a table. When they left, because they were informed they wouldn't be served, one of the young ladies in the group decided to record the bartender in question performing her duties outside the bar (throwing out the garbage), and say some nasty things to her.I've been coming here for a bit and never had an issue with ANY of the bartenders or the rules they set in place. True people who respect a bar know you can't bring outside drinks into any establishment. The people here are great and I will not let anyone talk negatively about a place based on lies.Come through and have fun!
July 26 · Sunshine RaeFanfrickingtastic. Freddy’s is a nice neighborhood bar. Perfect for an after work beer or a place to meet a friend for a drink. Although I didn’t see the entertainment they also have a back room for shows. The bartenders were chatty but professional and sitting at the bar is the place to be. I think my favorite thing was the history and age of the surroundings.
