Indochine Introduce
For decades, Indochine has stood as a New York City institution, a timeless classic that transcends the ever-changing landscape of the downtown dining scene. Located on Lafayette Street, this Vietnamese restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it's an experience defined by its unique blend of exotic French-Vietnamese cuisine, stylish ambiance, and a captivating history. Since its opening in 1984, Indochine has been a favorite for locals and world travelers alike, a place where the fashion and creative elite have long gathered. This article will take you on a journey through the elements that make Indochine so special—from its enchanting atmosphere and exquisite menu to the consistently excellent service that has maintained its legendary status.
The first thing you'll notice upon stepping into Indochine is the captivating atmosphere. It’s an upscale, trendy, and romantic space with a distinct tropical feel, thanks to its signature palm frond wallpaper. The lighting is intentionally muted, creating an intimate and cozy environment that is perfect for a special occasion or a memorable dinner. Despite its long history as a "see-and-be-seen" spot, the restaurant maintains a welcoming vibe. As one long-time patron noted, returning to Indochine "feels like coming home." The bar area and dining room are always buzzing with a diverse crowd, from groups celebrating to couples on a romantic date. It’s a place that effortlessly balances a lively energy with an air of sophistication.
The food at Indochine is what keeps guests coming back time and again. The menu is a delightful fusion of French and Vietnamese flavors, offering a range of dishes from appetizers to entrees that are perfect for a family-style spread. Signature dishes like the Shaking Beef, crispy spring rolls, and glazed duck breast are consistently praised. The duck, in particular, is noted as being "rich and perfectly cooked without feeling chewy." While some dishes, like the fish wrapped in banana leaves, might have mixed reviews, the overall quality and consistency of the menu are what define the restaurant. The dessert menu is also a highlight, with the Coconut Creme Brulee and rum cake with house-made coconut ice cream receiving high praise for their silky-smooth texture and divine finishing touches.

Given its popularity, reservations are required for dinner and recommended for brunch, and there is often a wait, which is a testament to its enduring allure. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I thought the food was good not amazing. The service was phenomenal and the ambiance is great. The ravioli, the egg rolls, and the Shaking Beef were superb. However, the fish we got wrapped in banana leaves was maybe one of the most fishy dishes I’ve had in my life.Overall 4 stars and avoid that fish!
May 13 · John CanfieldIndochine continues to deliver on both quality and atmosphere—stepping back inside feels like coming home. We opted for a family-style spread and everything was so good!We got spring rolls from the cold and hot apps and golden-fried crab cakes. For entrees, we went with the duck, which was hands-down my favorite of the night—rich and perfectly cooked without feeling chewy. Its was served with bok choy and had our reservation not been so late we would have ordered another one.The Shaken beef was delicious as well, and completed my need for protein. On the side we kept it simple with a bowl of sticky rice. For dessert we couldn’t resist the crème brûlée, a silky smooth custard with a perfectly thin caramelized sugar top, and the rum cake paired with house-made coconut ice cream. The cake itself was moist and boozy, while the ice cream was dotted with toasted shredded coconut that tasted like tiny coconut macarons—an absolutely divine finishing touch. All in all, Indochine’s enduring ambience and consistently excellent dishes make it every bit as special on a return visit as it was the first time. Highly recommended for any occasion.
July 01 · Megan GeraldThis is the 2nd time l I've been here, and there is always a pretentious, uptight, and unhappy staff that makes you feel unwelcome. This spot is memorable, to say the least. The bartender last night was amazing. French. Good looking. Great as his job & super friendly. Drinks were a hit. The crowd was, well, typical. And the food, as always, is delicious, beautifully presented, and perfectly timed. For some reasons the ribs were not as good as they used to. They had a funny taste. We didn't finish them. Lastly, everyone loved the coconut Crème brûlée, I didn't. Tasted bitter and not coconutty enough, but consistency was great.
May 25 · RAM IMAGERYThis place gets crazy busy on a Friday night! Dinner and cocktails are amazing! Start off with a Yuzu saké and finish the Ume cocktail some of the best taste of Asia. 😋😋😋
September 01 · Aletha AlexanderExcellent as always. Generous portions. I high recommend the prixe fixe restaurant week menu this year.
