The **Vegan Curry** and **Vegetarian Curry** options are deep and exciting, moving beyond basic potato and spinach dishes to feature items like **Vegan Plantain Kofta Curry** and **Nadru Malai Kofta**.
Secondly, the customer reviews consistently highlight specific dishes that are essential tasting experiences. The **Vegetarian Dahi Puri** and **Vegetarian Palak Chaat** are described as "particularly incredible" and are a perfect way to start any meal, showcasing the restaurant’s mastery of Indian street snacks. For main courses, the classics are a hit: the rich and flavorful **Butter Chicken** and **Chicken Tikka Masala** are standout choices, often paired with the highly-recommended **Garlic Naan**.
Meat enthusiasts should explore the **Tandoor / Grills** section, with the **Salmon Fish Tikka** being a confirmed highlight. The curries are generous and packed with flavor, exemplified by the "wonderful" taste of the **Lamb Vindaloo** and the excellent portions. While one customer noted the **Jalsa Chicken Dum Biryani** was drier than expected, the overall consensus points to excellent taste across the menu, confirming JALSA's commitment to culinary excellence.
Ultimately, JALSA is the right choice for New Yorkers seeking not just a meal, but a comprehensive and accommodating Indian dining experience. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Amazing amazing Indian food. The restaurant offered a spacious atmosphere. While the service was a bit slow—there was only one server on duty—we appreciated her friendliness and informative nature. As for the food, we were thoroughly impressed with several dishes, which we found to be standout highlights: the Vegetarian Dahi Puri and Vegetarian Palak Chaat were particularly incredible, followed closely by the Salmon Fish Tikka, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Garlic Naan. However, I was a bit disappointed with the Jalsa Chicken Dum Biryani, as it turned out to be drier than I had hoped.Would we return? Absolutely!
November 07 · O YGood portions. Nice place for a family dinner. Service is very good. Everything we had tasted wonderful. We had lamb vindaloo, chicken biryani and chicken tikka masala.
July 02 · Amanda DThe vegetarian rice was Chinese takeout food rice. There's no way to get Basmati rice here that hasn't been cooked in chicken broth. They don't even use any herbs to season it. Just plain chinese food rice. I didn't even finish my curry because the rice was so disappointing
September 28 · Online UserSomeone had tipped me off to Jalsa while I was speaking with him at the grand opening of Grizzly Coffee on Coney Island Avenue. While I was enjoying my coffee there, I told him that I preferred vegan Indian food. He immediately suggested that I check out Jalsa, which was just a few blocks away from Grizzly. A few weeks later, I met up with my cousin David who has been a vegan for much of his life. Our plan was to have dinner together at Jalsa to see what it was all about. Once we entered this restaurant, I noticed how large it was. We were escorted to our table, which was situated in a spacious room towards the back of the restaurant. Our waiter was also the owner. She was so nice to us and brought us a few sample dishes we had never tried that were complimentary. The menu was divided into three distinct groups: meat-based dishes, vegan dishes, and vegetarian dishes. There were many options for each group which impressed me. We were fortunate to visit during a week day night when it was not too busy, so we had the opportunity to have a nice chat with the owner. She told us that the kitchen uses separate pots and pans for the vegan and non-vegan dishes. She also mentioned that Jalsa is the only Indian restaurant in a neighborhood that has a high population of Pakistani and Bangladeshi people among many other ethnic groups. The vegan dishes we ordered were delicious to the very last bite. After we had finished, she brought us on tour through more of the restaurant. There was a large backyard space with a covered tent that catered to large parties. My cousin David seems to know every Indian restaurant throughout New York City, but not this one, and it's only a 15-minute walk from his home. We both agreed that if it wasn't for that man's suggestion at the cafe, we would never have known about Jalsa, for much of Coney Island Avenue is pockmarked by ugly car mechanic shops and it would easy to miss this place for that reason. I was happy to visit this amazing Indian restaurant and proud that I introduced it my cousin. We are now both hooked and will make a return visit soon.
September 28 · Josh PesinLooking for Indian food go ahead with this. Food was delicious and so was the service. They have backyard where you can enjoy your time..Highly recommended for Indian food lovers..
