Kohout Bakery Introduce
For generations of New Jersey residents, particularly those in Bergen County, the search for truly authentic, old-world baked goods ends at Kohout Bakery. Nestled on Jewell Street in Garfield, this local institution has been serving up the delicious flavors of European tradition since 1917, providing a nostalgic experience that transports patrons back to a simpler time. Walking into Kohout Bakery is often described as stepping into a piece of history, complete with friendly staff and an enticing aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet pastries.
Kohout Bakery is most famously known throughout the state for its exceptional Pączki. Pączki, pronounced poonch-key,
are traditional Polish deep-fried donuts—rich, fluffy, and typically filled with a sweet filling such as jam, custard, or lemon curd. The popularity of these treats peaks around National Pączki Day, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, making Kohout's a necessary pilgrimage for many Polish American families across New Jersey. Customers consistently rave about the perfect balance of flavors
and the delectable difference between the glazed and powdered jelly varieties. Their traditional jelly Pączki, in particular, are lauded for being generously filled, offering a satisfying crisp bite on the outside
and a perfectly fresh texture.
However, the bakery's offerings extend far beyond these seasonal favorites. Kohout Bakery is a comprehensive purveyor of old-world bakery
items, utilizing time-honored recipes reminiscent of traditional European baking methods. The cases are laden with a diverse selection of fresh baked goods including hearty rye bread, yeasty crullers, delectable danishes, various cookies, and the traditional poppy seed strudel
(Makowiec). The crumb cake here is another highly recommended item, with one customer noting a tempting display of four different choices for the sheet pan variety, cementing the bakery's reputation for classic comfort treats.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1To most Polish Americans, National Pączki Day means making a ton of these delicious sweets and binge-eating them. It is celebrated the Thursday in the week before Ash Wednesday, whose tradition is unique since it dates back to at least the Middle Ages, and is the perfect excuse to eat the famous and delicious Polish pastry.Pączki, pronounced "poonch-key," are Polish deep-fried donuts that are filled with some sweet filling such as jam, custard, lemon curd, or chocolate. They are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing, glaze, or dried orange zest.Located on Jewell Street in Garfield, we’ve been coming here to Kohout Bakery for a couple of years. Greeted by the friendly staff, my partner and I were lucky to have the whole establishment to ourselves. Like a step back in time, this small bakery sells freshly made bread, danishes, cookies, strudel, and some deli meats. Patrons have raved about the perfect balance of flavors, particularly noting the distinction between glazed and powdered jelly varieties. We picked out a couple of their donuts, whose price was very reasonable and cash only. This bakery continues to celebrate the joy of baking and the flavors of generations past, which we can recommend.
March 01 · Eloy YipOld world bakery, serving up fantastic jelly donuts. Highly recommend the glazed traditional jelly vs powder or mixed fruit jelly. Traditional seemed to have so much more filling. Nice crisp bite on the outside, definitely freshly made. Next time will need to get a sheet pan crumb cake, seemed like there were 4 different choices.
December 02 · James N.Very nice small bakery and good prices! Their flavors very much reminds me of grandma's/mama's home cooking. I had the cheesecake bites and a mixed berry donut 😋
