★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Love Sorate! It's been my go-to ever since I visited their first-store in March 2024, right after they opened, but before they blew up on Instagram. While I've been happy for their well-deserved success (extremely good Matcha), it's been very disappointing that I've never been able to enjoy the true experience the owners envisioned at the original store due to the "influencer" culture, long lines, and overcrowded people who get in the way of meditating on the tea.Hopefully this newer store with its slightly larger footprint helps aleviate the overcrowding concerns. Thankfully it's closer to my office and I can sneak away for a contemplative matcha session in the middle of a weekday.Would encourage the owners to impose a no-laptop/no-phones policy for a subset of their opening hours (eg. 11am-4pm weekdays) as many other coffee shops do in the city to ensure people who come there really take the time to appriciate the tea and culture that they are trying to bring from Japan.
September 11 · Hersh MehtaI am really impressed with the quality of their matcha. The space feels calm and welcoming, and the staff takes time to explain the differences between their teas. The matcha itself is smooth, vibrant, and noticeably fresher than most cafés in the city. A great spot if you’re looking to enjoy authentic matcha or learn more about Japanese tea culture.

September 11 · Camila MI had the most amazing matcha at Sorate! The store instantly transports you to a Kyoto vibe, where the staff carefully prepares traditional Japanese matcha. I tried the Soku matcha paired with sakura wagashi, and the whole experience felt like a beautiful ritual—calming and meditative. Such a hidden gem in Union Square! I’ll definitely be coming back often.
