La Cabaña Peruana Introduce
If you're a New Yorker with a taste for vibrant, authentic, and hearty international cuisine, you owe it to yourself to explore the culinary treasures of Rockaway Beach, Queens. Tucked away on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, away from the seasonal tourist buzz of the boardwalk stalls, you'll find a local gem celebrated for bringing the rich flavors of South America right to our city’s coast: La Cabaña Peruana.
More than just a restaurant, La Cabaña Peruana is a local favorite offering a genuine taste of Peruvian culture. It stands out in the New York food scene by specializing in a delicious trifecta: exceptional Peruvian cuisine, with a strong focus on fresh seafood, and their highly-praised rotisserie chicken (Pollo a la Brasa). This establishment is where locals go for dishes that are both comforting and excitingly authentic. It has earned a reputation for serving generous portions of flavorful food, which many New Yorkers agree makes it their go-to spot when they are looking for a true treat.
While the vibrant orange walls hint at the welcoming atmosphere inside, the heart of La Cabaña Peruana lies in its dedication to serving traditional dishes. From the tangy, refreshing citrus marinade of a classic Ceviche to the comforting spice of a rich Parihuela seafood soup, the menu is a deep dive into Peru’s coastal culinary heritage. Whether you're a long-time fan of Peruvian food or just looking to expand your palate with some of the best Latin American flavors in Queens, La Cabaña Peruana offers an inviting and unpretentious setting to enjoy a satisfying meal.
It is worth noting that while the quality and flavor of the food are frequently praised, reviews occasionally point to inconsistencies in service, particularly regarding long wait times for delivery and pickup, or sometimes issues with order accuracy. However, for many loyal patrons, the authentic, delicious food and generous portions—praised as 'great' and 'fresh'—make it a worthwhile destination for family gatherings or a satisfying solo meal.
The atmosphere is generally described as casual, cozy, and comfortable, with a focus on the food rather than elaborate decor. It is a family-friendly venue and popular among groups and tourists looking for an authentic local dining experience away from the main beach drag. It is truly a spot where Rockaway residents eat, and it proudly advertises itself as a destination for pollos a la brasa, so you can expect the booths to be packed with patrons enjoying the famous rotisserie chicken.

What is Worth Choosing
The menu at La Cabaña Peruana is vast, but certain dishes are consistently highlighted by New York patrons and are essential for any first-time visitor or returning local. To experience the best of this Peruvian gem, consider the following categories:
Seafood Staples – Must-Try Peruvian Coastal Dishes:
- Ceviche (Ceviche De Pescado, Ceviche De Camarones, Ceviche De Mixto): Peruvian Ceviche is the country’s national dish. It consists of raw fish or mixed seafood marinated in fresh lime juice, often spiced with Peruvian yellow peppers (ají amarillo), and mixed with diced onions. The citrus 'cooks' the fish, resulting in a tart, refreshing, and bright starter. This dish is frequently praised in reviews and is a highly recommended choice.
- Jalea (Jalea Grande): This is a magnificent fried seafood platter, typically featuring a mix of lightly breaded and fried seafood like fish, shrimp, and squid. It is often served with cancha (toasted corn) and topped with salsa criolla—a vibrant, tart salad of lime-marinated red onions, tomatoes, and cilantro—providing a perfect balance to the rich fried flavors.
- Parihuela (Seafood Soup): Often called the Peruvian answer to bouillabaisse, Parihuela is a hearty, robust, and spicy seafood soup. It typically blends various fresh seafood (fish, shrimp, clams, crabs, etc.) in a savory broth flavored with ingredients like ginger, cilantro, lime, and ají panca (a Peruvian chili pepper), making it a deeply nourishing and flavorful meal.
- Other Standouts: The menu features a wide array of seafood entrees, including Pescado A Lo Macho (fish in a creamy seafood sauce), Arroz Con Mariscos (Peruvian-style seafood rice), and a refreshing Salmón A La Plancha (Grilled Salmon).
Chicken and Beef Classics – Signature Comfort Food:
- Pollo a la Brasa (Rotisserie Chicken): As a self-described pollos a la brasa restaurant, their roast chicken is a staple, lauded for being juicy and flavorful. Available in various combo sizes with sides like yellow rice, beans, or French fries.
- Lomo Saltado (Lomo De Carne, Lomo De Pollo, Lomo De Mixto): A popular Chifa dish of Chinese-Peruvian fusion, this stir-fry features beef, chicken, or a mix of both, sautéed with onions and tomatoes, and served over a mountain of rice and French fries. It is a savory, comforting choice that showcases Peruvian wok-cooking techniques.
- Aji De Gallina: A classic Peruvian comfort food, this is a creamy, slightly spicy dish of shredded chicken cooked in a sauce made from ají amarillo (yellow pepper), walnuts, and milk, typically served with white rice and a boiled potato.
For a truly authentic taste of New York’s Latin American food scene, look no further than La Cabaña Peruana. Its combination of famous rotisserie chicken and authentic, high-quality seafood dishes makes it a neighborhood destination worthy of a visit.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I went to La Cabaña today, and honestly, I left feeling really disheartened. I waited over ten minutes just to have my order taken, while the two waiters prioritized phone orders and helped several other guests who arrived after me. When I finally received my food, it was overwhelmingly just rice—about 90%—with a few pieces of potato, some mini carrots, and a single slice of beef that was still raw on one side.I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I can’t help but wonder if the way I was treated—especially after asking a few questions about the menu—somehow affected the quality of the meal I was given. It’s just really disappointing. I’ve been trying to find a new spot I can go to regularly and feel good about supporting, but this experience honestly left a bad taste in every sense. Please note that nothing was taken off of the platter. As the amount of food that I have and what I am showing you is what I was given.
June 01 · Briony OwensFood is fresh & really tasty, the beans had a smoky flavor, good tamales (pork),chaufa chicken & beef
April 26 · BLAKSTARFirst of all, the front glass door was very dirty and had hundreds of fingerprints. The extremely loud music was very disturbing. The busboy was inexperienced but helpful. There was no salt and pepper on the table. After asking three times, they understood me and brought it from the other table. The white rice was terrible, not fresh, probably from yesterday. There was also no tap water. Two waitresses and a busboy did not know what they were doing. It was below the average restaurant quality. I will not give it a second chance.
June 28 · Alex W.I just ordered from this location and picked up a half chicken with yellow rice and beans and a side order of plantains. During the order I asked for 2 of the red sauces and later I asked if I could try the green sauce. These sauces come in small packages (see pic), so it is usually just enough to cover a 1/4 meal let alone the half chicken order. It was not until I received my order and checked the bag that I discovered that my request for 2 red sauces and 1 green was not fulfilled. I was I informed that I could not have 2 of the red sauces. In fact, I was told by the guy in the front that I had to ask the woman in the back if I could have another as I originally requested. She said sure and then said "$1.00." REALLY?! You are going to charge a local resident who decided to patron your restaurant tonight an extra $1 for a small package of sauce. Now this is of course insulting considering that I not only paid for my meal but I always give a standard tip because I know that our small businesses need to be supported. The guy later said that he would cancel out the tip, which by the way I never asked nor did I tell him to do that as my tip was not based upon the need to gain favors. In sum, the food is really good but they definitely lost me as a customer. I NEVER have this type of issue with several of my favorite restaurants that I frequent and I did find his presumed "kind gesture" to return my tip insulting because he totally missed the point. Oh I failed to mention that during my wait, I witnessed another customer ask for more green sauce, which I received 2 without any request for extra money. DO BETTER!
July 04 · S.N. LI came in today with my group of friends, it took 10 minutes for us to be seated. Once seated it took our waiter another 10 minutes to take our order. I got the arroz con mariscos and it was horrible. The rice was hard, it was mostly rice and a few pieces of shrimp. Our waiter was terrible and inattentive. Every time we requested something he took 10 minutes to get back to us. We waited 30 minutes for him to clear our table and get our check. Auto grad was included without letting us know prior to checking out. Horrible.
