La Pola Introduce
## Introduction / Overview: A New Jersey Legend on Palisade Ave
In the vibrant, culturally rich landscape of North Jersey, a few establishments rise above the rest to achieve legendary status, and La Pola in West New York is undoubtedly one of them. More than just a Cuban restaurant, this establishment is considered by many, including celebrated culinary experts, to be the home of the Best Rated Cuban Sandwich in the US. This bold declaration, once made by the late Food Network chef Carl Ruiz, immediately put this humble, old-school, counter-service café on the national food map, sparking debates from Miami to Tampa, yet solidifying its position as a must-visit spot for any serious food lover in New Jersey.
Since being opened by Belarmino Rico in 1978, La Pola has maintained a commitment to tradition and authenticity. Its aesthetic is unapologetically "old-school," offering a nostalgic step back in time where the focus is entirely on the quality of the food and the warmth of the service. Here, local users won't find modern, sleek décor; instead, they find a genuine, beloved neighborhood institution that has been perfecting its craft for decades. The atmosphere is as authentic as the café con leche that regulars crave in the morning.
The core of the business centers on turning out incredibly popular Cuban sandwiches & other Latin specialties. Whether you’re stopping by for an early morning Cuban coffee and breakfast or craving one of their famed pressed sandwiches for lunch, La Pola promises an experience that is consistently praised for being delicious and truly authentic. It’s a cultural touchstone in West New York that provides a taste of Cuba right here in Hudson County, NJ, a place where local patronage and national recognition seamlessly merge.
## Location and Accessibility
La Pola is a pillar of the local West New York community, conveniently located at 5400 Palisade Ave, West New York, NJ 07093, USA. Palisade Avenue is a significant thoroughfare, making the Cuban restaurant highly accessible to residents throughout West New York, North Bergen, Guttenberg, and the surrounding areas of Hudson County. Its location contributes to its neighborhood charm, as it's a spot where locals frequently converge for their daily Cuban coffee or an authentic meal.
Recognizing the density of the area and the nature of a quick, counter-service operation, La Pola offers practical accessibility features for its customers. While it is noted that street parking can vary, a significant benefit to local users is the mention of a few tight parking spots to the left of the restaurant. This small convenience is highly valued in North Jersey where parking can be a challenge, encouraging more users to stop by for a speedy visit.
The old-school nature of the service, described as "counter-service cafe," naturally lends itself to efficiency. The business operates strictly on a Takeout basis, meaning customers can quickly place their order, watch it being prepared, and be on their way. This focus on speed and ease-of-use ensures that even during busy breakfast or lunch rushes, La Pola remains a practical and dependable option for a quick, high-quality meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1📸: La Pola Restaurant (Verdict: 👍🏻 No Potatoes) WNY, NJMy brother came up from Boca Raton for a high school reunion this weekend. After getting home pretty late last night, he woke up with a craving for some “café con leche” and something Cuban to eat. What better place to for a Cuban sandwich than “La Pola” in West New York, NJ? This is the Home of the Best Rated Cuban Sandwich in the US! Old-school, counter-service cafe turning out popular Cuban sandwiches & other Latin specialties. Btw, when I say old school I mean really old school. Belarmino Rico opened La Pola in 1978 and looks nothing has ever been updated. Besides the flatscreen on the wall. lol We decided on a “Media Noche” sandwich. This one comes served with a softer, sweeter doughy bread instead of the more firm and crusty Cuban bread. All their bread is sourced from a local Cuban bakery. Of course we took back home a couple Cubans. Besides ourselves.. lol.Stop by if you’re in the area and give them a try. You won’t be disappointed. Bring an empty stomach. There is street parking usually not too bad. They also have a few tight parking spots to the left of the restaurant.@vinopotato 🍷🥔
October 18 · Vino PotatoGreat cuban sandwich! I ordered both the especial de la casa and the medianoche with a side of chicharone for to go and I was mindblown! I cannot say that they have the best cuban sandwich since I haven't had one before but both sandwiches are the bomb! Can't wait to go back again on my cheat day!
November 14 · L GoIf you like Cuban sandwiches this is the place for you trust 👌 💯 😌 🙌 😉 😏 me. This 🇨🇺 Cuban sandwich was Zagat rated Okay. The rest of their Spanish food is average, but if you like Empandas then it's a must visit a dozen or so different types of Empandas fillings. They are worth the $3.00 eachreally fresh they fry them right in front of you. Also they have good fresh Pork Rinds if you enjoy that like me.
July 20 · Jimmy NeiraWhen I was a teenager, my brother said we had to stop in a tiny restaurant, because he wanted a sandwich. He bough a "Cuban", and handed half to me. I hated pickles, and it was a life-long hatred; the kind that you've marinated in, which drips from every inch of your body, without effort, but they shaved them so thin that it was more of a condiment than the olive-green disc of seedy rubber fast-food had made me expect. I didn't know what they had slipped me, until I was half done enjoying it. The salty tang complimented the mojo pork and mojo sauce, not found on so many "Cuban sandwiches" outside this area. And that's how fast I stopped hating pickles, shifting to the healthy suspicion a person should have in the first few steps toward making an enemy into a friend. When I walked in the door and asked for 'sándwich cubano', he said, in an accent unexpectedly like my Grandparents, "You can have that, but wouldn't you like this, instead?", as he lifted the polished stainless steel lids off four buffet serving troughs, steaming with the smell of green peppers, onions, two kinds of rice, and mojo pork. He assured me this was better than his best seller, so I ate, and he offered seconds, so I ate more. When I was done, the only thing holding back an involuntary reverse purge of my stomach was a desire not to offend this man, and then he charged me a fair price.I vowed to return and eat that Cuban sandwich, as I've been in the area to take care of my mother, and expected to be there longer, and when I did get it, the bread, sauce, and meats rose to my expectations, but somehow the pickle did not. I thought to myself: "When you spend twenty-five years romanticizing the memory of a first sandwich, while eating poor copies of it, there truly is not any way reality can live up to what the mind constructs in the place of a faded past.". I had my sandwich, I enjoyed the atmosphere, and if anyone tries to serve you a Cuban sandwich without buttery green garlic sauce, dream of something a little more exotic, and visit La Pola, while the proprietor is still running the show.
