The tavern's history speaks to a commitment to genuine hospitality and a classic tavern environment. Patrons often describe the ambiance as "cozy," "casual," and "trendy," a trifecta that makes it ideal for nearly any occasion, from unwinding after a long workday to celebrating a win with your crew. What truly sets Lawton Street Tavern apart is the dedication to quality that extends from the taps to the kitchen. While it provides the full bar experience you’d expect, it elevates its food menu well beyond typical bar fare, offering scratch-made dishes that reflect the diverse culinary landscape of New Rochelle. This unique combination of a friendly, familiar bar environment and a surprisingly high-quality menu is what has cemented its reputation as a New Rochelle favorite.
For those new to the area or simply looking for a new spot, the Lawton Street Tavern offers a comfortable and instantly welcoming vibe. The staff, including friendly faces like Jill, Meritza, and manager Jessica, are often highlighted by patrons for their attentive and caring service, which contributes significantly to the tavern's community feel. The establishment prides itself on creating a true "local pub" atmosphere, where conversations flow easily between staff and patrons, making solo diners feel just as comfortable as large groups. This focus on community and personal connection is a valuable and often hard-to-find asset in the bustling New York metro area.
Beyond the friendly service, the tavern is a destination for food enthusiasts. The kitchen, reportedly managed by "Italian guys" who put a lot of passion into the menu, turns out tavern classics with an inspired twist. Reviewers rave about the scratch-made quality, a testament to the kitchen’s dedication. For instance, the wings have garnered a reputation for being some of the best in New Rochelle—large, meaty, and well-seasoned. Other customer favorites that showcase the elevated menu include hearty portions of barbecue rack of ribs served with creamed spinach, perfectly grilled chicken with gorgonzola cheese salad, and an array of satisfying sandwiches.
One particular standout mentioned by a patron is a lunch special featuring a steak sandwich dressed with freshly grated horseradish sauce and arugula, a dish that demonstrates the kitchen's flair for coaxing rich flavor out of high-quality ingredients. This is not the standard microwave-and-deep-fry bar menu; this is carefully prepared food designed to be savory and satisfying. The tavern also ensures that classic bar staples are executed flawlessly, with mention of house-made ranch dressing so good "you could drink it," which perfectly complements their exceptional salads.
The drink program at Lawton Street Tavern is equally robust. Being a full-service bar, they offer a wide range of choices to satisfy any preference. The generous pours are noted by regulars, ensuring good value with every order. The selection includes a variety of beer on tap, a full bar stocked with spirits, and an accessible wine list. Whether your drink of choice is a chilled Pinot Grigio, a expertly mixed cocktail, or one of the many beer selections, the bar is equipped to serve. They are also known for their creative approach to mixed drinks, with the staff willing to accommodate inventive requests, all of which contributes to a lively and social drinking environment.
As a sports bar, the environment is perfectly set up for fans to enjoy the action. Big screens are available throughout the space, making it an excellent spot for catching major games with friends or fellow sports enthusiasts. Additionally, the tavern is noted for its "Bar games," adding an extra layer of entertainment and engagement for those looking for some casual competition. This commitment to entertainment extends beyond televised sports, with the establishment proudly offering live music and live performances. While the specific calendar for these events may vary, the inclusion of live acts contributes to the vibrant and engaging energy, making a visit to the tavern more than just a quick stop for a drink.
Lawton Street Tavern is also deeply embedded in the local community. Its presence is felt through co-sponsorships of local events, such as the New Rochelle Parks & Recreation's "Views & Brews" fundraiser, highlighting its role as a key local business committed to the betterment of the New Rochelle area. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I moved to New Rochelle a few months ago— from the island that is Staten. I live in downtown “New Roc,” as it is called locally. It took me a while to venture here, and there is a mystery to that, for my last name is Donovan. This is a true bar, with a juke box, and big screens to watch the sports action. It is a hangout for those in the know, who love good music, Eagles now playing…John Mellencamp a while back.Any bar of this kind rises or falls with the talent of the people behind it. There is Jill, tall and a great listener, the lovely Meritza, a young mother, whom I met on a sultry Sunday, and Jessica, who has got the place in hand as it’s manager. How could I forget Kevin, a mick like myself, who taught me why the canned drink “White Claw” is manufactured in a way that makes people want more sugar. Smart guy. (My preferred drink is a Pinot Grigio, which they have on hand, nice and cold.)The bar could get by on this, and this alone, and the conversations struck up here by and among to staff and its patrons. But the food is scratch made…by the Italian guys who bought the place a few years ago. You gotta try any salad with the ranch dressing, which I could drink. Sting now playing…”…every single day, every word you say…”At lunch today, there was a special that shows someone busted their butt behind the line. A steak sandwich with freshly grated horseradish sauce, topped with arugula. The steak was marinated by someone who understands just how to coax flavor out of beef, and then browned perfectly. Tina now on…”You’re simply the best…”
July 27 · Karen DonovanFairly nice place, you can find exceptional conversation with some good people at times as well. I've only really had a burger and wings there before however the test was for the most part down home. Be cautious during the early day hours for their is a bi-polar young lady in there who tends to sample the sauce and lose her head. Her emotional rollercoaster and distasteful manner is pretty much a permanent deterrent as far as I see. A social experience is not meant to be circled by the bar attendees unruly lack of emotional stability.
December 21 · M.i.c Y.My all time FAVORITE place❤️Love the food! I recommend the mango habanero fried calamari, all the pastas, the wings & the chicken Ceasar salad. The chef really puts his all in the food. It is exceptional. The vibe is fun I love all the bartenders especially their manager Jess🫶🏻 ily girly popI’ve hosted 3 events here and you can really do a lot with the place. With my growing family I have navigated mostly to the restaurant part but I love that I can still bring our kids & have a blast. One little thing I would suggest is another high chair 🫶🏻 other than that love this place love the food love everything.
