Makan House offers a wealth of choices, making it difficult to narrow down a few recommendations. However, a deep dive into the menu highlights items that truly embody the spirit of Malaysian dining and are often the most sought-after by patrons.
For an appetizer, the classic **Roti Canai** is a must-try. Although some may find the texture different from specific expectations, it’s a cornerstone of the cuisine. It’s perfect for dipping into the accompanying savory curry sauce.
When it comes to main courses, you'll find a strong emphasis on curries and noodle dishes. The **Beef Rendang Over Rice** is a rich and slow-cooked favorite, providing intense, complex flavors. For those who enjoy seafood, explore options like the **Sambal Shrimp** or the specialty **Tilapia In Lotus Leave**, which promises a unique preparation.
The **Noodle Soup** section is particularly compelling. New Yorkers should consider the **Asam Laksa**, a tangy and spicy fish-based noodle soup, or the rich and aromatic **Prawn Mee**. These dishes are often excellent examples of regional Malaysian cooking.
Patrons have noted that the **sweet and sour fish**, sometimes offered as a special not printed on the main menu, can be a real winner. Always check for daily or seasonal specials written on the wall or board for unique, perhaps off-menu, gems. While some heavier dishes like the **Seafood In Taro Nest** may have mixed reviews, the menu is so vast that there are always new and exciting flavors to discover. It’s a great place to step outside your comfort zone and try dishes like **Bak Kut Teh**, a pork rib herbal soup, which is a significant part of the Malaysian food experience.
Finally, complete your meal with an authentic Malaysian dessert or drink. The **Malaysian Iced Milk Tea (Teh Tarik)** is a classic and the sweet, icy refreshment of **Ice Kacang** (shaved ice with various toppings) offers a perfect, cooling end to a spicy, flavorful meal. For those looking for a complete and satisfying meal that is both familiar and exotic, Makan House delivers a comprehensive Malaysian experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1There are several large round tables. The owner is friendly and works fast. The staffs might be a little overwhelmed with the owner’s fast pace. The owner needed to remind staffs several times to get rices or drinks to the table. The food is a hit and missed. The roti tasted like store bought. The chicken and beef were ok. The sweet and sour fish is a winner. It’s not printed on the menu but it was written on the wall as special.
July 03 · Wing LeeThis restaurant has many 5 star reviews. They are probably lying. The seafood taro nest is not worth your money. Hannan Chicken was okay. Nothing outstanding.Service was okay. Prices were higher than typical Malaysian restaurants.
May 11 · ChloeExcellent food and service! We ordered the drunken noodles and Hainan chicken and it was among the best Malaysian food we've ever had. Highly recommended! A+ for food and great service!
May 04 · Alvin ChongI'm so glad I ignored the negative reviews. If you want delicious Malaysian food be sure to try Makan House. We had the beef rendang, drunken noodle, Malaysian pork chop, and roti canai. Every dish was delicious. The beef was tender and flavorful. The deep-fried Malaysian pork chop was crispy and delicious. The staff was friendly and made us feel at home.
September 10 · Ice ColdI’ve ordered here before but through a delivery app. It was packed well, food was ok considering the travel time and temperature which of course is to be expected with deliveries. We went to dine in and boy oh boy! It didn’t disappoint. The place is clean, and the staff were attentive to the customers. We ordered their rice dishes: Beef Rendang, Malaysian Porkchop, Ginger Pork and their lunch special of Singapore Fried Mee Hon and a couple of their appetizers: Wings and Chicken Satay.. all were superb!! We loved the smoky noodles.. wok hay you say?! The spice level of the beef rendang was tolerable for me, tasty and tender ginger pork in every bite and the porkchop was not heavily battered and the sauce coated every bit of the meat without being too goopy. The toppings on the wings were interestingly tasty, there were sesame seeds and some nori with some meat floss of some kind.. again super yummy! Chicken satay was very tender and enjoyable even without its sweet chunky peanut sauce. Overall, I’m satisfied with the dine in experience and will definitely keep coming back!
