For New Jersey residents eager to try something beyond the familiar, Mesa Maya presents a menu deeply rooted in tradition. The restaurant has quickly become a local favorite, successfully replacing its predecessor with a modern setting that is both clean and inviting. While it serves classics that everyone loves, its strength lies in the regional specialties that tell a story of Central American heritage. Whether you're a long-time fan of Latin cuisine or just starting to explore, Mesa Maya is a must-visit destination in Bergen County.
The menu is organized thoughtfully, offering choices for every part of the day, including a dedicated selection of traditional Guatemalan favorites. Diners can enjoy everything from hearty, traditional soups and appetizers to full lunch and dinner plates. The focus on authenticity, particularly with its Guatemalan dishes, has earned Mesa Maya high praise from patrons who recognize the true regional taste, with one customer noting how a dish like the Subanik tasted very similar to that from the Chimaltenango region in Guatemala. This commitment to traditional preparation is what elevates Mesa Maya beyond the ordinary.
One of the key draws for regional food enthusiasts is the opportunity to savor dishes that are rarely found on mainstream menus in New Jersey. For instance, Mesa Maya proudly features three of Guatemala's most iconic and complex stews:
Subanik: A beloved, hearty, and traditional Guatemalan stew renowned for its rich, complex flavor. It is often made with three different types of meat (pork, beef, and chicken/turkey) simmered in a spicy-sweet tomato stew with a variety of chilies. The name itself, from the Kaqchikel language, suggests the importance of chilies in the dish's flavor profile. It is a deeply satisfying dish of comfort food, perfect for experiencing genuine Guatemalan cooking.
Pepián: A flavorful, hearty stew often considered one of Guatemala’s national dishes. The stew features meat—like chicken—in a thick, velvety sauce made from roasted seeds, peppers, and tomatoes. Its rich, earthy flavors come from ingredients like toasted pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and sesame seeds, which both thicken the sauce and add a nutty depth, making it similar to a Mexican mole but distinct in its flavor profile.
Pulique: Another traditional stew, Pulique is often described as a slightly thinner meat and vegetable stew compared to the thickness of Pepián. It provides another excellent example of the varied and comforting world of Guatemalan soups and stews.
The availability of these authentic stews, alongside other staples like Tamales, Pupusas, and Chuchitos (steamed corn dough with chicken wrapped in a corn husk), confirms Mesa Maya's dedication to its Central American roots.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Food portion, seasoning and accesible prices will give this place a 5 star. They have some traditional food from Guatemala. I got Subanik and it tasted very similar to Chimaltenango. Their horchata is homemade so I also liked it. Hate the artificial flavor from other places so my visit was great being a New Yorker. Maybe service can improve. Don't think the person was friendly. Failed to follow up on all tables. Had to actually get up to make a request because the person failed to check.
December 08 · IWORSHIP 2006Great food! A huge improvement over the Olivio restaurant it replaced. Very clean, fully upgraded, modern, friendly decor, lunch specials are only $7 (pictured). I recommend this place for it's good tamales, pupusas, and bakery. Authentic and very clean in a modern setting.
November 19 · Erick BHad a rough time here before with the food, but decided to give it another shot. Ordered three servings of carne asada, which were listed as $10 each on the menu, so I figured the bill would be around $30-35. When the food arrived, it wasn't terrible for what seemed like a $10 dish but it did not taste good at all. But then the bill came, totaling around $50—a real rip-off! Especially since the food was so bad: cold rice, canned beans, and a stinky salad. $50 for three dishes that should've been $30? No way. Don't bother coming here; I won't be back! Service was also terrible; asked for ketchup and got a tiny cup. Plus, overheard others complaining about expired-smelling food. Save your money and grab some $12 Chinese instead!
March 24 · monnieMy family and I were craving some churrasco and because we always had an amazing experience we didn't think this time would be different. Unfortunately the churrascos they gave was rotten and they tried to cover it up by giving us the good side of the meat. They think we can't smell how disgusting it was.. Also for $24 they gave a small piece. I would not recommend for anyone to go there. This is a horrible experience.
November 06 · Clara CosmeLast night my husband surprised with take out from this wonderful place. The staff was friendly and helpful. The meal was flavorful. The portions were a nice size and the prices are fair. Highly recommend.
