Mike's Island Grill Introduce
## Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers seeking a true taste of the Caribbean, Mike's Island Grill stands as a neighborhood fixture, bringing authentic Jamaican cuisine to the heart of Brooklyn. Located on East 98th Street, this restaurant is dedicated to serving the classic, soulful dishes that define the island’s vibrant culinary tradition. It positions itself as a casual, yet trendy spot where patrons can find comforting and familiar food for any meal of the day.
Mike's Island Grill is a full-service Jamaican restaurant, specializing in favorites such as jerk chicken, oxtail, rice and peas, and beef patties. The establishment aims to be accessible for multiple dining preferences, offering both dine-in and takeout options and catering to a wide range of customers, from solo diners grabbing a quick lunch to large groups gathering for dinner. Their menu is built around traditional 'Comfort food,' allowing local New Yorkers to easily access 'Quick bites' and 'Small plates' that resonate with authentic island flavors.
It is important for prospective patrons to note that while the restaurant is clearly popular and strives for authenticity, recent customer reviews highlight significant inconsistencies in food preparation and quality. Specific feedback mentioned dry jerk chicken, hard coco bread, watery oxtail gravy, and undercooked oxtail pieces. Additionally, a fee for using debit cards is a key consideration for New Yorkers who rely on cashless transactions. Despite these noted issues, the restaurant maintains a presence in the community as a go-to for its range of Jamaican staples and affordable prices.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The place might look a bit rough around the edges, but sometimes those spots have the best food. Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of those times. I ordered a beef patty with coco bread, jerk chicken with rice and peas, and mac and cheese. The beef patty lacked crispiness, and the coco bread was hard. The jerk chicken was dry and didn’t come with any jerk sauce. When I requested sauce, what I got was watered down and didn’t help the taste or dryness of the chicken. The rice and peas were okay, but the mac and cheese was disappointing. The only thing I enjoyed was the drink. As a foodie who eats out every day and appreciates good flavor, I can’t recommend this place.
November 02 · G SanMy husband picked up a large oxtail with rice and peas, boiled dumpling and steamed vegetables. We added a side of mac and cheese bake. This was our first time trying the place and since they had a A rating we said we'd give it a try. We also try to support local and small businesses and never like to leave negative reviews. But it's really difficult to find something good to say about our experience. The rice and peas tasted mediocre, the gravy was watery and not rich, thick and brown like we're used to. The steamed vegetables did not taste fresh or they may have been overcooked. The boiled dumpling had a weird aftertaste. And sadly the oxtail were not cooked fully. There were too many pieces (out of 9-10 pieces for a large size) that were rough and tough to eat.I ordered the Mac and cheese for myself (my husband isn't a fan of mac and cheese) and I could not finish it. It was flavorless, overcooked and just not good.We will not be returning. If you're looking for good Jamaican food, there are so many other options in the area that deliver on flavor, freshness and a positive overall experience.Another thing to note- they charge you a dollar for debit card purchases. One positive thing is that their prices are affordable.
December 29 · Jessica Jannieretoday I went to the restaurant that lady was so rude. When you open the door to enter the restaurant She was very loud on her phone talking as low as ever plus before she serve you, she supposed to wash her hands because she was touching her phone. Dang she was over the phone talking as loud to the person on the phone when she serve me I asked her for more meat on the food. She did not give me a chance to say I will pay for it. She was very rude and she said I was never going to pay for the meat she did not give me the opportunity to say I’m going to pay for the extra meat that is not the way you do hospitality when you are in a restaurant serving the public she’s very rude and she needs to be fired. She have no respect when she’s serving people that enter the restaurant. The debt was July 5, 2025 at one or four in the afternoon and that is not good service for that restaurant whoever is serving people, especially that lady
July 05 · Shayla TheodoreThe food taste good but the price isn't worth the amount they put in a plate I paid 15$ and there's barley anything in it for medium
July 26 · Kaydee MorrisThis is a small kitchen, one that provides all but yummy from soup, grills to the most popular Carribean oxtail. They are affordable, accommodative and efficient. The customer service is superb.
