What is worth choosing
Choosing Mombar is about choosing a truly unique and authentic dining adventure. This isn't your typical quick-service restaurant; it's a place where food is a passion and the dining experience is a form of art. The slower pace of service is a deliberate part of the charm, inviting you to connect with your dining companions and fully appreciate the exquisite flavors of the food. The quality of the cuisine, as praised by many customers, is exceptional. The meat on the shanks "falls off the bone" and the sauces are "fantastic," a testament to the chef's skill and dedication. The menu, which includes everything from traditional appetizers like hummus and falafel to more adventurous dishes like Lamb Brain and Liver Alexandria, offers something for everyone.
The atmosphere alone is a reason to visit. The bazaar-like interior, filled with "family heirlooms and strange clutter," creates a memorable and distinctive backdrop for your meal. This is a place for those who value character and a story behind their food. Mombar is perfect for those seeking comfort food, healthy options, or small plates. The generous offerings of vegetarian and halal dishes ensure that it’s an inclusive dining spot. Ultimately, Mombar stands out not just for its food but for the entire experience—it’s a place that feels "memorable and special," and one that you'll undoubtedly want to return to. In a city full of dining options, Mombar provides a rare and personal touch that makes it an Astoria treasure.
The commitment to a personal touch, where one individual often manages the entire operation, is a refreshing departure from the corporate restaurant scene. It adds an element of genuine care and passion that is palpable in every dish. The fact that the menu is often recited verbally creates a direct, human connection between the chef and the diner, a rarity in today’s world. While this may mean service is slower, the reward is an unparalleled meal that is worth the wait. It’s a testament to how great food and a truly unique concept can create a lasting impression. For anyone in New York looking for an unforgettable meal, Mombar offers an experience that is deeply personal, incredibly flavorful, and unlike any other.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1What an experience! There is one older gentleman doing all the cooking and serving etc. Just know that as a result, the experience is more akin to eating at a family member’s house rather than being served at a restaurant, which is really part of the charm. Service is slow. Bring a friend and expect to spend a couple of hours dining. The menu is not published. He told us verbally what he could make and we chose lamb shanks, hummus, and cauliflower with pomegranate sauce. And the food, all of it, was so shockingly good I could never give it enough due. The meat on the shanks fell off the bone and was served in a fantastic sauce with a tabouleh minty spinach type mixture. Paired with the hummus and fresh pita… just so great. The interior is kinda crazy too. Think a bazaar or a garage stacked with family heirlooms and strange clutter/objects.This place is so memorable and special… can’t wait to return.
June 23 · Julie HUnique dining in Astoria. Solid Egyptian food prepared and served by one man so if you are pressed for time this is not your place. My dining partner really enjoyed theirmeal, I was a little underwhelmed but overall a nice dining experience in a funky dining room
August 07 · PaulA one of a kind experience. The owner himself literally made the hummus, beef shank, and eggplant dish. He served us a home made Egyptian meal. He then gave us a tour of his restaurant and showed us his art. A chef, a craftsmen, an artist, a really great guy. you have to go.
May 13 · JeremyIf you are looking for a delicious home cooked meal in an Egyptian house, this is the place. The price is also very good for NYC. The food didn't wow me but for the price, it was of great value!
September 19 · RobbinAmazing place with delicious food, artsy decorations and friendly chef. The owner does everything and has very interesting stories to tell. Everything in the restaurant is either his art or his collection, including the chandelier and flooring! It’s like eating dinner in an art studio. We had lamb shank and branzino, the lamb just melted in my mouth. After our meal, he even gave each of us a small piece of mint chocolate as dessert. Overall unforgettable experience, definitely a special place to check out!
