Nakaji Introduce
Nakaji is a culinary jewel located at 48 Bowery in the heart of New York City, offering a refined and intimate Japanese dining experience. This is not your typical restaurant; it's a destination for aficionados of Edomae-style sushi, led by the talented third-generation sushi chef, Kunihide "Nakaji" Nakajima. The establishment is a dual-concept space, featuring an exclusive chef's counter for the omakase experience and an adjacent, sophisticated bar. Stepping into Nakaji, you are immediately enveloped in a cozy and trendy atmosphere that feels both exclusive and welcoming. The decor is meticulously crafted, with a notable emphasis on stunning, regularly refreshed flower arrangements that add a unique touch to the ambiance. This is a place where every detail is considered, from the high-quality ingredients to the attentive service. The focus is on a multi-course, seasonal omakase that showcases the freshest fish and shellfish, with a menu that changes to reflect the season's bounty. The experience is designed to be personal and unforgettable, with the chef and his staff making every guest feel special. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, treating a client, or simply looking to enjoy a top-tier meal by yourself, Nakaji provides a tranquil escape from the bustling city and a true journey into the art of Japanese cuisine.
At the heart of Nakaji’s appeal is the omakase dining experience. The chef crafts a seasonal menu, with options that include a Nigiri Omakase and a more extensive Chef's Omakase, which features additional sashimi and appetizers. The quality of the ingredients is consistently top-notch, with a special emphasis on fresh shellfish and other seasonal delicacies. Chef Nakajima’s expertise is evident in every piece of sushi, with a focus on traditional Edomae techniques and a perfect balance of flavors. The restaurant’s commitment to an exceptional beverage program is also a major highlight. The bar at Nakaji offers a thoughtfully curated selection of rare Japanese whiskies, an impressive array of sake, and a seasonal cocktail menu. The bar also serves its own menu of small plates, providing a separate, equally enjoyable experience. While some customer reviews mention occasional inconsistencies in pacing or specific dishes, the general consensus is that the highs are truly exceptional, with dishes like the uni, salmon roe, and bluefin tuna being consistently delicious. The friendly and professional staff are a key part of the experience, offering warm hospitality and attentive service throughout the meal. This combination of high-quality ingredients, a masterful chef, and a sophisticated atmosphere makes Nakaji a standout for those seeking an elevated and authentic Japanese dining experience in New York City.

June 18 · Omar ShomanWe didn’t get our first course until 25min after the reservation time, and we didn’t get our first sushi course from chef until 1.5 hours after the reservation time.Food had highs and lows. Pickled ginger was sliced unevenly by chef in large chunks. The unagi in the soup had many bones to chew through and was overcooked. Tamago was unrefined.Uni, salmon roe, and the bluefin tuna jawline were delicious, and the rice and yuzu accompanying many of the pieces were great.
October 20 · Siyuan LiuOmakase with Chef Nakajima was incredible! The hairy crab and uni were highlights but every piece was perfect and delicious! Service was outstanding. The cocktails were excellent as well. Will definitely need to go back again!
