Nami Nori Montclair Introduce
The Garden State’s culinary landscape is known for its incredible diversity, and the dining scene in Montclair, in particular, stands out as one of New Jersey’s premier foodie destinations. Amidst the vibrant mix of global and creative eateries, Nami Nori Montclair has carved out a unique and exciting niche for itself by specializing in one of Japan’s most enjoyable and casual forms of sushi: temaki, or hand rolls. For those across New Jersey looking for a fresh, fun, and high-quality Japanese dining experience that breaks from the traditional sushi bar, this Bloomfield Avenue location is a must-visit.
Temaki, which translates to "hand roll," is distinct from traditional cut rolls (maki). Instead of small, sliced pieces, temaki is prepared as a larger, conical roll, meant to be picked up and eaten immediately with your hands, much like an ice cream cone. This focus on immediate consumption ensures the nori (seaweed) remains perfectly crisp and fresh, creating a delightful contrast in texture with the seasoned rice and flavorful fillings. Nami Nori brings this authentic, informal, and highly social style of eating right to the heart of Montclair. By concentrating on this single, perfectable form of sushi, they deliver a consistently high-quality product that resonates with both long-time sushi enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
The restaurant itself, which proudly identifies as both Asian-owned and women-owned, provides a wonderfully appealing atmosphere that matches the fresh and trendy nature of its food. Customers often describe the ambiance as a perfect blend of casual, cozy, romantic, trendy, and upscale—making it suitable for everything from a quick lunch break to a special dinner date. The focus here is clearly on quality, both in the food and the environment. Customer reviews frequently praise the fresh, tasty food, noting that it is all prepared from scratch, which speaks to the restaurant’s commitment to excellent standards.
This distinctive dining concept is a welcome addition to the already eclectic mix of restaurants that make Montclair such a dining hot spot. While the area boasts everything from traditional Ethiopian to fusion Italian-Japanese and fine French dining, Nami Nori offers something simple, interactive, and exquisitely executed, providing New Jersey diners with a fresh take on Japanese cuisine.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Food is great! Everything was prepared while we waited, it was fresh and tasty. It will take time to get your order since it is prepared from scratch.Service is unobtrusive, helpful and fast.I would recommend making a reservation, especially for a larger group, since the place seems to be filling up fast - especially on the weekends. There is no free parking - your options are paid street parking or commercial parking structure - few within walking distance from the restaurant.
May 01 · Damian P (Louis Cyphere)We came early and restaurant was almost empty. I did not care much for appetizers. Flavor was not there for me. Most of the dinner I was struggling to get a plastic out of temaki. It was not cooperating and my wife was helping me out….. annoying. My wife loved the place and I didn’t.
May 16 · VladI’ve been to NYC location many times before I moved to Jersey and this is my first time in this location. Everything was amazing and no different between both locations, caviar service was absolute fantastic my most favorite bite. All the hand rolls were excellent and the service was top notch. Will definitely be back, hands down!!
May 20 · FRANK PINSETThe plates were fun and tasty, great atmosphere, and friendly servers that can accommodate birthday/ pictures. The drinks are a little bland and can use some work.
September 23 · German HidalgoI don’t like to leave low reviews, but I feel that Nami Nori has potential and can definitely improve in several areas. I arrived with high hopes after hearing rave reviews about their sushi offerings, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I tried their Tuna Dip, which was a mixed bag of flavors that left much to be desired. To start, the presentation of the Tuna Dip with little chips that came with it was rather underwhelming. It looked more like pure Sriracha than a thoughtfully crafted sauce, lacking the creativity and finesse I expected from a sushi restaurant of this caliber. A little twist on the sauce could elevate the dish tremendously—perhaps a citrus-infused aioli or a tangy ponzu would have added a refreshing flair.Moving on to the Temaki, I found that not only did the flavor profiles fall short, but the prices were also hard to justify given the portion sizes. For the amount spent, I expected a more satisfying meal, but I walked out feeling hungry and a bit regretful about my lunch choice. A sprinkle of unique dipping sauces or a creative twist on traditional flavors could transform these offerings into something truly memorable.Additionally, I must mention the seating arrangements. The wooden backs of the chairs were uncomfortably rigid, and my back was practically begging for support. A simple addition of cushions could turn a dining experience from discomfort into delight, allowing guests to linger longer and enjoy their meal.I also ordered a drink which I thought was good but was full of ice and the size was too small for the price.Overall, my experience at Nami Nori was a letdown. With uninspired flavors, lackluster presentation, and uncomfortably rigid seating, it fell short of the expectations set by its reputation. I believe there’s potential here, but they need to spice things up—both on the plate and in the dining atmosphere. Until then, I’d recommend exploring other options on the menu or even giving this place a little time to refine its offerings.
