Great rec by my Indian-Canadian friend! (Thanks, Princejeet!) He told me years ago to try the dosa, and I finally got to visit. I've never had a dosa before, and I didn't know what it was before he told me about it.This is a cart in Washington Square Park. After seeing so many college students around here, I spotted the line right away. I waited at least 40 minutes around 2 PM on a Friday. By the time I was halfway, the guy said he sold out of the special one. Then later he had to cut off the line because he said he would not have enough for everyone. To be honest, the liquids/sauces looked unappetizing, like there is a bright green thing all over it. BUT, to my surprise, the green sauce tasted the best. The soup in the cup was pretty flavorful.I got two things, and it came out to $22. The portion looks big.Cash or Venmo. No credit card. - Shmiley C

Location and Accessibility

NY Dosas is located at a prime spot in the heart of Greenwich Village, specifically at 50 Washington Square S, New York, NY 10012, USA. This address places the food cart right in Washington Square Park, a famous landmark known for its lively and artistic atmosphere. The park is a hub of activity, frequented by New York University students, street performers, and people enjoying a leisurely day. The cart's location is easy to find, often identifiable by the long line of eager customers that forms during peak hours.

The accessibility of NY Dosas is one of its major appeals. Situated in one of the city's most walkable neighborhoods, it is easily reachable by foot for anyone exploring downtown Manhattan. Public transportation options are plentiful. The Washington Square Park area is served by several subway lines, including the A, B, C, D, E, F, and M trains at the West 4th Street – Washington Square station, and the N, Q, R, and W trains at the 8th Street – NYU station, all within a short walking distance.

Because it is a food cart with outdoor seating, NY Dosas offers a casual and relaxed dining experience. There is no indoor seating, but the park itself provides ample opportunities to sit on a bench and enjoy your meal while soaking in the vibrant surroundings. This setup perfectly embodies the essence of authentic street food—quick, convenient, and part of the urban landscape. It's a place where the atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the food itself.

Services Offered

NY Dosas is a dedicated Indian takeaway establishment, and its services are tailored for efficiency and convenience. The primary service is takeout, with customers placing their orders at the cart and receiving their freshly prepared food to enjoy on the go or at a nearby park bench. While the food is meant to be eaten outdoors, the cart provides a complete takeaway experience.

  • Takeout: The core service offering, allowing customers to get their food quickly and enjoy it wherever they please.
  • Outdoor seating: While not provided by the cart itself, the surrounding Washington Square Park offers numerous benches and grassy areas where customers can comfortably enjoy their meal.

Features / Highlights

NY Dosas stands out for several reasons beyond its delicious food. The unique features and offerings make it a memorable part of the New York food scene.

  • Authentic Indian Cuisine: The menu is centered around traditional South Indian vegetarian and vegan dishes, providing a true taste of India. The dosas are a particular highlight, known for their crispy texture and flavorful fillings.
  • Vegan and Vegetarian Options: All items on the menu are plant-based, making NY Dosas an excellent choice for vegans, vegetarians, and anyone looking for a healthy, meat-free meal.
  • Affordability: Despite its prime location in a high-cost city, the food at NY Dosas is incredibly affordable without compromising on quality or portion size. This makes it a popular choice for students and budget-conscious diners.

What Is Worth Choosing

Choosing from the menu at NY Dosas is a delightful dilemma, as everything is prepared with care and skill. The menu is focused and offers a few standout items that are worth highlighting. The primary offerings revolve around dosas and uthappams, which are essentially savory Indian crepes and pancakes, respectively, made from fermented batter. They are served with a side of lentil soup (sambar) and coconut chutney.

The Masala Dosa is a classic choice, filled with a flavorful potato and onion masala, offering a comforting and delicious experience. For those looking for something a bit different, the Special Pondicherry Dosa or the Mixed Vegetable Uthappam are excellent alternatives. The Uthappam, in particular, has a softer, thicker texture and is topped with various vegetables, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.

Beyond the signature dosas, the "Other Lunches" section features more substantial meals that are great for a full midday meal. The Idly Lunch and Jaffna Lunch offer a different take on South Indian cuisine, while the Singapore Noodles provide a unique fusion option. It is worth noting that for these lunch items, calling ahead is recommended to ensure they are available and ready when you arrive.

A crucial part of the experience, according to many customers, are the accompanying sauces. The sambar, a lentil soup with multiple vegetables, is described as rich and flavorful. The bright green coconut chutney, while perhaps unusual in appearance to a newcomer, is a surprising hit, adding a fresh and zesty dimension to the meal.

In conclusion, NY Dosas is not just a place to grab a meal; it's a New York City institution. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the quality of its food, the warmth of its service, and its commitment to offering an authentic and affordable culinary experience. It is a place where every bite feels like a warm hug, and the friendly welcome from the Dosa Man makes the experience even more special. For anyone in New York, a trip to Washington Square Park is incomplete without a stop at NY Dosas to savor some of the best Indian street food the city has to offer.
