On A Roll Introduce
On A Roll is a beloved Staten Island establishment that transcends the definition of a standard "hamburger restaurant." Situated conveniently on Hylan Boulevard, this American eatery skillfully merges the quick service of a fast food joint with the comforting quality of a local diner and sandwich shop. For New Yorkers seeking reliable, delicious, and affordable comfort food, On A Roll offers a complete experience for lunch, dinner, and even late-night bites.
At the heart of their success is a commitment to quality ingredients and classic, satisfying flavors. Their menu is built on staples like the 1/3-pound burgers sourced from the renowned Pat LaFrieda, served on fresh-baked Kaiser rolls. However, what truly defines On A Roll is its signature item: the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with Gravy. This sandwich, often cited as a must-try for new visitors and a nostalgic favorite for long-time patrons, features certified Angus beef cooked on-premise and topped with a homemade family-recipe gravy.
The dining experience is intentionally casual and designed for maximum comfort and speed. The availability of both quick counter service and relaxed seating, combined with extensive service options like Curbside Pickup and No-Contact Delivery, makes it perfectly suited for the busy, modern New York lifestyle. Furthermore, the establishment proudly identifies as both disabled-owned and veteran-owned, adding a commendable layer of community pride to the business.
Beyond the main courses, On A Roll is celebrated for its excellent sides. Their French Fries, often described as an absolute classic and among the best on the island, are a popular choice, particularly when paired with a cup of their famous hot cheese. Other crowd-pleasers include the Chicken Tenders, made from 100% white meat, and the Golden Corn Fritters. This attention to detail in every aspect of the meal is why so many locals consider the food here superior to offerings from larger chains or even traditional diners.
The atmosphere is highly "Casual," catering to a diverse and inclusive crowd. The restaurant is explicitly "Family-friendly," "Groups," "LGBTQ+ friendly," and designated as a "Transgender safespace," ensuring a welcoming environment for everyone in the New York community. This focus on inclusivity, combined with a staff praised for being "Great," "inviting," and "quick," creates a positive and friendly vibe that encourages repeat visits. The business also provides extensive accessibility features, which is crucial for accommodating all members of the community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have been going to this place since it opened in Staten Island, and I'm going to continue going here when I'm in the neighborhood.I see many people who've I have gone to the original with say either On a Roll is bad, or alternatively; the food isn't that good.In comparison to nearly every local fast food restaurant; I consider On a Roll to have the best staff, service, and food by a mile.Yes, the cheese kinda carries a lot of the food but that's one of the appeals of On a Roll.I'd rate the chicken fingers a 5/5 and I'd have them over any local place like applebees any day of the week.I'm more of a cheeseburger type person, and that's what I usually order. It's a big burger, but the condiments carry and I'd rate this burger a 4/5. I would personally prefer if they switched up their burger style to maybe a smash burger with cheez wiz since we've never seen that and a different type of beef, but I'm eating that regardless. It's tasty, and it's better than anything you're getting from Wendys, Mcdonalds, or any local diner if I'm being honest. I also kinda wish they had kosher dill pickles, but if you're looking for a crunch on your burger there are other alternatives that On a Roll does offer. The fries.. those are an absolute classic. They're one of my top three favorite fries on the island, and the nostalgia hits me hard. It's a must have with the cheese. The ironic part is that I have had legitimately everything from this place except the thing it's most famous for - the roast beef. I may try that sometime the next time I go, and I always recommend new people to the Island to On a Roll. Also, they're one of the only places left with a ketchup dispenser, and the staff are some of the most friendly people you'll ever encounter.Highly recommend, and I hope they stay in business for a long time. Affordable, tasty, and clean.
September 25 · MalcasterSOOOO I hate doing this part but must be honest..Not good. The service and staff were Great just inviting and quick there was some people in there mostly older and I get it after my experience why!!!! Nooo seasoning just bland the roll was falling apart..Bread was very good baked right there but everything else just not good..Meat was a lil dry and not many onions they only have wiz for cheese wish had some cheddar to cover up the blandness!!!! Cost was great 750 for a roll..Just Not a fan
July 24 · Gregory MyersI will redo this review when i go back cause i will be back. This place is great for the amount of food you get for the price you pay is unmatched. The roll was butter soft roast beef amazing, the photos do not do this place justice will redo when i eat there again. And if they have cookies when you get there order one it will be one of the best you’ll ever have.
April 30 · Thomas P Smith NY REAL ESTATEMy husband and I tried it for the first time today. I got the fried fish sandwich. He got the roast beef with onions well done. I think what’s great is you get what you ask for. It was really really good! I can tell it was made fresh! As opposed to ya know sitting and frying in oil. It was so crunchy and flaky. I will definitely be going there again. Also
May 10 · Teresa MFirst time eating here today. Food is amazing had to buy 2 sandwich because the roast beef was so good. Fries drinks everything on point the owner and sister are very nice and welcoming. Will be back
August 27 · Jimbo69I can attest to the rudeness of the employee who didnt bother to get off the line with Greg during our interaction. He was dismissive and not helpful at all. If it helps he has one blue eye and one brown eye. When I asked recommendations he was flippant. The tables appeared to be wiped down. The bathroom has a do not cross police like sticker tape on it to prevent non customers using it but it is very offputting for customers who legit paid for service. The guy behind the counter sneezed into his shirt twice and didnt sanitize or wash his hands which was interesting since he was so close to the food delivery station. I most likely would not return here if I didnt have multiple errands to run in this strip mall. The filet was disproportionate from the bun so more fish than bun. In addition I had to ask for a lemon wedge but they only did slices. Naturally would expect lemon with a fish sandwich. Underwhelming sauce on the fish sandwich. The tartar sauce is kens which feels like low hanging fruit, fresh tartar would be ideal. The fries were dangerously hot and the "cheese sauce" was the equivalent of velveeta. I found it odd it wasn't placed on top of the fries but I get speed trumps quality at this place. To be fair I got my meal under 5 minutes. The cod filet at alamo movie theatre was way better than this. This tasted like a Costco tilapia fried up too fast and fries with an inconsistent mandolin chopping job. Overall no one makes you feel welcomed or valued as a customer. Im expecting a wicked response from whoever manages this business account as I saw the lack of emotional intelligence or business acumen from other responses that gave candid feedback. Won't return anyway but happy to chat on how to improve restaurant management of this particular location. I can't speak to how the whole franchise is run. No one acknowledged me cleaning up my own table even when the grey haired guy with black glasses was out front sipping from a cup. Overall the experience is sloppy and I dont need to see more. Place had sparse patronage on a friday afternoon however that doesn't dictate the health of a business.
