You hear a lot about third spaces lately and I didn’t appreciate what it really meant given how transactional New York can be. I tried plenty of pay to play spots with friends and it always went the same. It’s a “creative” space that doesn’t quite get the community part right. From the first workshop class, Recess Grove cleared all of that up for me. It’s a true third space where the creativity meets the community in a way that’s authentic and very intentional. After having gone to a few events now, I can confidently say that’s their focus to build connections through the arts while having fun with it.Once I found out they had a wood shop I had to sign up for the Foundations Woodworking course. Justin the teacher / co-owner clearly cares a lot about woodworking and getting to know everyone in the course. You may have to suffer through quite a bit of wood “woo woo” talk about understanding that wood was once a tree, but you really do walk away appreciating the craft and the connection to nature. Our course was to make a charcuterie board, which at first may seem relatively simple of a task. However, Justin incorporated so many different lessons into the course along the way and by the end you can really get creative and make an art piece compared to a simple block of wood. Beyond that the course gives you an appreciation for how hard it can be to work with wood but with the right fundamentals and patience it really ends up being attainable.TLDR: I’d highly recommend Recess Grove for anyone looking for a third space type energy where you can be creative. Add in the cafe side with great food and drinks it really is a fantastic place to get creative on your own or with a group of friends. - Andrew Vitone

recess grove Introduce

In a city often defined by its fast pace and transactional nature, Recess Grove stands out as a genuine "third space"—a concept that refers to a community hub separate from home and work. Located at 327 Grand St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this unique establishment is more than just a cafe; it's an art studio, a social club, and a sanctuary for creativity. The space is a brilliant blend of a cozy cafe and a vibrant workshop, offering a place where people can truly "move slow and make things." From the moment you step inside, you can feel the intentionality behind the design and the mission to foster authentic connections through art. It’s a place where the "creativity meets the community" in a way that is both authentic and deeply meaningful, as one customer enthusiastically described. The owners, who are deeply passionate about their craft and community, have successfully created a welcoming environment for everyone, from seasoned artists to complete beginners.

Recess Grove provides a much-needed antidote to the daily grind, offering a space to decompress, explore a creative hobby, or simply enjoy a great cup of coffee in a relaxed setting. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and trendy, making it an ideal spot for a variety of occasions, whether you're on a unique date night, catching up with a group of friends, or simply looking for a new place to be on your own. It is a place where you can find a true sense of community, with a focus on building connections through shared creative experiences. This is a venue that recognizes that people are "craving chances to connect with others in ways that feel authentic and aren't solely focused on what we're eating and drinking." While it certainly offers delicious food and drink, its core purpose is to be a space for creative exploration and genuine human connection, a rare find in New York City.

The spirit of Recess Grove is best captured by its motto: "move slow and make things." It's a philosophy that permeates every aspect of the business, from the carefully crafted food and drink menu to the variety of classes and events offered. The space itself was designed and hand-built by the owners, with counters, tables, and benches that inspire and support the creative process. The restaurant also takes a firm stance on inclusivity, with an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safe space environment, which is highly valued by New Yorkers. It is a place where people can truly be themselves and find a supportive community, whether they are working on a woodworking project, painting a mural, or simply enjoying a cup of tea. It's a creative playground for adults, making it an invaluable addition to the Williamsburg neighborhood.
