What is Worth Choosing
For a new or returning patron at San Juan, the choice should focus on the dishes that truly embody the restaurant’s authentic Puerto Rican identity and customer-praised quality.
The Signature Experience (The Must-Try Dishes):
- Mofongo (The Classic): As a premier Puerto Rican spot, trying one of the Mofongo variations is essential. For the full experience, opt for the Mofongo W/ Shrimp Creole or the Mofongo W/ Beef Stew for a hearty, traditional meal. Alternatively, the Mofongo De Yuca offers a different root vegetable base for plantain purists.
- The Highly Praised Appetizer: Tostones: The reviews specifically highlight the Tostones as "amazing, not dry," and the accompanying mojito (garlic) sauce as "a hit." Ordering a side of Tostones ($3.95) is non-negotiable for a truly authentic start.
- The Hearty Entree: Fried Pork: The Fried Pork W/ Rice & Beans Combo is a great choice, with a reviewer describing their pork chop as "so delicious crispy out and tender inside." This dish is a true representative of hearty Latin comfort food and is offered at a competitive price point.
- The Traditional Lunch Option: Pollo Al Horno: Taking advantage of the Daily Combo Lunch Specials is smart for a mid-day meal. The Pollo Al Horno ($9.95), or baked chicken, with its combination of slow-cooked meat and flavorful sides, provides excellent value and speed, catering directly to the local lunchtime rush.
For the Drink Enthusiast:
Skip the standard sodas and opt for a traditional Latin beverage. The Aquas Frescas like Cucumber Lime or Hibiscus ($5.00) offer a refreshing, natural pairing for the richly spiced food. For a classic sweet treat, the Morir Soñando (literally 'to die dreaming,' a creamy orange juice and milk concoction) or a fruit shake like Papaya or Mango is highly recommended.
San Juan delivers a robust, authentic culinary experience, making it the premier choice in New City, NY, for those craving the genuine taste of Puerto Rican heritage.

September 25 · Iris OlmedaExcellent service! The price it’s worth the portion size. I ordered pork chop with tostones and alcapurria. The pork chop was so delicious crispy out and tender inside, but the tostones were amazing, not dry and the mojito sauce it’s a hit too. I was surprised with the alcapurria, it’s not the traditional version; overall I definitely will be back to try more foods.
January 14 · lisa diazFood here is delicious. Like it really is. Not sure how service is usually here because it's the first visit but today it was just one lady and what seemed her young daughter helping her out on the floor. We did arrive as a group of 5. And 2 hours before closing. Another table arrived about 10mins after us and they were weighed on 1st. That's why the 4 stars and not 5. So it was slightly slow but a round of applause for the lady she was taking walk-in orders, phone orders, and tables all on her own. I will definitely return. Like I said EVERY THING ORDERED WAS DELICIOUS..
August 14 · Victor OrtizNice small place but the food definitely doesn't taste like Puerto Rican food. It wasn't to great to be honest, disappointed as I have been wanting some good spanish food and really thought seeing all the great reviews it would have tasted good.
July 29 · Y D (Jaja Diaz)This place has the best chicken stew. The chicken falls right off the bone and is the most delicious we've ever had. We love coming here.
