Serendipity 3 - Upper East Side Introduce
For generations of New Yorkers and visitors alike, Serendipity 3 is more than just a restaurant—it's an enchanting and whimsical institution. First opened in 1954, this historic venue has captivated millions with its unique blend of American comfort food, a magical atmosphere, and some of the most famous desserts in the world. Located on the Upper East Side, it has long been a place where both everyday diners and celebrities, from Marilyn Monroe to Andy Warhol, have come to enjoy a delightful and memorable meal. While it has evolved over the decades, the core of Serendipity 3 remains its ability to transport guests to a fantasyland, making every visit feel like a special occasion.
The menu at Serendipity 3 is a testament to classic American cuisine, offering a wide array of savory dishes that are as comforting as they are creative. The "Beginnings" section features popular appetizers like "The Ultimate Potato Skins" and "Not Yo' Ordinary Nachos." The main courses include an extensive list of burgers, from a classic "Cheeseburger" to the more adventurous "Infamous Truffle Burger" and the "Pepperoni Pizza Burger." The "Footlongs" section offers classic hot dogs and more decadent options like the "Mac N Cheese Dog," which are perfect for a fun and hearty meal. For those looking for lighter fare, the restaurant also provides a selection of salads, including "Miss Miltons Cobb" and "The Monet." The commitment to providing both familiar and new flavors is evident across the menu.
While the savory dishes are a highlight, the desserts are the true stars of the show at Serendipity 3. The "Sweets" menu is a list of showstoppers, with options like the "Blackout Cake," "Creme De La Creme Cheesecake," and "Over The Rainbow Cake." But the most famous creation of all is, without a doubt, the "Frrrozen Hot Chocolate." This iconic, gigantic frozen drink, served in a goblet piled high with whipped cream, has become a legendary part of the New York dining experience. It is a signature offering that has drawn crowds for decades and is a "must-try" for many first-time visitors and returning patrons alike. The restaurant's reputation for its desserts is so significant that it has even held multiple Guinness World Records for the most expensive desserts ever created.
The atmosphere at Serendipity 3 is often described as historic, cozy, and casual, but also "cramped" and "busy." This is part of its unique charm. The decor is whimsical and eclectic, filled with Tiffany-style lamps and vintage bric-a-brac that give it a timeless feel. The bustling environment is a reflection of its enduring popularity, particularly among tourists and groups, as well as being a popular spot for college students and families. The restaurant is notably "LGBTQ+ friendly" and a "transgender safespace," creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all diners. With its focus on being "good for kids" and even "good for kids' birthday," it’s an ideal spot for a family celebration.
Due to its legendary status, Serendipity 3 is almost always busy, and a "wait" is a common occurrence. The restaurant strongly recommends making a reservation, particularly for brunch, lunch, and dinner, to avoid disappointment. The staff is often praised for being "super friendly" and "impressed by that," ensuring that despite the crowds, the service remains quick and attentive. Serendipity 3 also offers a range of services from dine-in and takeout to catering, making it a versatile choice for any occasion.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We loved Serendipity!!! I made a reservation online about a week in advance, thank God I did. It was so busy! My husband and I and our 2 girls (ages 6 & 9) loved all our food and desserts! My husband got a bacon cheese hot dog and I got the truffle burger. Both amazing. We all had more fries than we could eat. We also got the frozen hot chocolate to share, and each daughter got 1 scoop of ice cream with a topping, which was also more than they could eat. Despite it being packed and needing a reservation, our food came out super quickly. I was really impressed by that. And our waiter, Leo, was SO friendly, which made the overall vibe amazing. We hope to be back next time we visit the city!!
June 27 · Samantha CyrI booked a table at the Serendipity 3 Upper East Side restaurant for dinner on my wife's actual 60th birthday this evening as we really enjoyed our last visit there 10 years ago for her 50th birthday.Although we arrived 20 minutes earlier than our 5:15pm slot that I'd booked online, we were shown to a table within a few minutes. There's very little space between tables in the very small & cramped restaurant, so don't expect any privacy as we could clearly hear and follow the conversations of the diners on both the tables either side of us.Our super friendly server Randy asked if we were at the restaurant for any special occasion and my wife told him it was her 60th birthday without realising I'd already put all this in the 'what's the occassion?' section of their online booking form. He also asked if we had any allergies, which again I had already said we had none in the 'Any allergies or restrictions?' section of their online booking form. So clearly the servers don't see or don't bother to read the information provided online by their customers, rendering it a complete waste of our time!!!The birthday girl had the American cheeseburger with fries, which was OK. I had the Grandma Holt's fried chicken sandwich with a pot of tea. The fried chicken was a bit dry, the bun was a bit stale and I found the fries to be a bit too salty. My wife was really looking forward to the superb peanut butter cheesecake dessert we enjoyed sooo much on our last visit. However, it was no longer on the menu so she had to settle for the Ultimate Creme Cheesecake, which came with side servings of hot fudge & strawberry sauce. Our fabulous server Randy put a candle on the top of my wife's cheesecake, lit it and encouraged everyone in the restaurant to sing happy birthday, which made her feel special. Whilst we were dining in the restaurant there were 4 other people celebrating their birthdays as well. There's a photographer at the restaurant now, who went around every table taking photographs of customers and returning later trying to sell commemorative prints, which I found a bit tacky and touristy - not something I'd expect at a high end restaurant. The decor in the restaurant looked very tired and we certainly didn't enjoy our meal there this time, compared to our exceptional experience 10 years ago. I feel sadly it's more of a tourist trap now, feeding off the embers of its former glory days, which have long gone. We didn't have any alcoholic drinks with our meal and I left feeling the $100 we spent there could have been better spent in one of the hundreds of exceprional restaurants in NYC for the special occasion of my wife's 60th birthday.
September 17 · Hong LeeExtremely fun for a Nightcap. Helps when you love the movie that featured it....but it was just an overall fun experience that c takes an adult back to childhood. The sliders, fries, and frozen hot chocolate were all wonderful.
September 06 · Rory FiszerSuch a fun and unique treat if you’re going to experience New York! The atmosphere is one-of-a-kind, sure to make you feel like a kid again. Then throw in the over-the-top desserts and it’s hard not to have a good time here. And such a friendly staff! Randy greeted us at the door, making us feel incredibly welcome (not always a common experience in NY). Super grateful I finally got to experience this, it def lived up to the hype!
June 13 · JJ BarrowsAbsolutely amazing food and a fun atmosphere! We actually have reservations at the time's square location but showed up at the wrong location and the staff was so accommodating and were able to get us seated within 15 minutes. I highly recommend this particular location, you will not be disappointed!!
