The Independent Introduce
In the vibrant and bustling landscape of Midtown Manhattan, where every street corner offers a new experience, finding a place that feels both comfortable and special can be a real treat. The Independent, affectionately known as 'The Indo' by its regulars, is one such establishment. More than just a restaurant, it's a cozy American bar and lounge that offers a much-needed respite from the city's relentless pace. Situated just steps away from major landmarks like Times Square, Bryant Park, and the Theater District, it’s the perfect spot for a quick lunch, a pre-theater dinner, or a relaxing post-show nightcap. The atmosphere is a blend of casual and trendy, making it feel stylish yet unpretentious. It's the kind of place where you can genuinely relax, whether you're dining solo or with a group of friends, all while enjoying a menu that's as creative as it is comforting. The staff is known for their attentive and friendly service, with reviewers consistently praising their patience and welcoming demeanor, making guests feel right at home.
The culinary offerings at The Independent are a delightful exploration of American classics with a creative twist. The menu is thoughtfully designed to cater to various tastes and occasions, from the hearty main courses to the tempting small plates perfect for sharing. Start your meal with a selection from their 'Snacks and Shares' menu, which includes unique items like the Crispy Chicken Bao Buns or the popular Sticky Tofu. For those looking for a more substantial meal, the 'Mains' section offers standouts like the Chicken Schnitzel and the classic NY Steak Frites, which one reviewer described as "so good." The menu also features a variety of Handhelds, including their signature Angus Prime Rib Burger and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich, both of which are perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner. The food is complemented by an impressive beverage program. The bar is a highlight, boasting a great beer selection with local draughts and a variety of bottled and canned options, as well as an extensive list of handcrafted cocktails. This combination of well-executed food and drink, all served in a casual and trendy setting, is what makes The Independent a standout choice in a crowded market.
The Independent has also become a go-to destination for its excellent value and appealing specials. The 'Combos' menu, for instance, offers a fantastic deal for those looking to pair their meal with a drink, such as the 'Burger & An Old Fashioned' or the 'Burger & Any Draught Beer'. For those on a budget or looking for a special dining experience, their "Debut" and "Headliner" combos are a great value. The late-night menu, available Thursday through Saturday, is a game-changer for anyone looking for a quality meal after 9 pm in an area that can often feel devoid of good late-night options. This commitment to convenience and value, combined with the inviting and lively atmosphere, makes The Independent a place that appeals to a wide range of patrons, from locals grabbing an after-work drink to tourists seeking a delicious and reliable meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Nice atmosphere. I went there during restaurant week with 2 friends and 2 of us were late but they were still patient and nice. Steak frites were so good. I would definitely go there again! My server was also nice and other servers were constantly checking in. For some that might be a tad overwhelming but it was okay.
August 17 · Ashley EastmanHard to find a nice setting for lunch in Midtown that's reasonably priced with good food and isn't so noisy that you can't easily talk to your lunch partner. This was such a place. Shrimp tacos were excellent. Especially fine was our service. Thanks to Ciera for not rushing us as we talked, for always smiling and checking in that we had all we needed. You really made the lunch a notch above.
August 21 · Barry SchilmeisterAmazing food, service, and atmosphere. I was pleasantly surprised to find a spot like this in Midtown, where it’s usually tough to come by. The espresso martini was the best I’ve had, and the food was fantastic. My only gripe is that the portions are quite small
September 12 · Mehri GulamovaA perfect hideaway from the chaos of Times Square. The interior leans stylish and dark with tufted benches and cozy lighting. Unfortunately, the menu changed just two weeks ago, so many of the most talked-about dishes were no longer available. But all is not lost—the chicken wings are fantastic: juicy, saucy, and balanced with just the right spice. Drinks were another highlight—generous, bright, and well mixed. A highly recommended spot to unwind with good cocktails and bar bites.Update: I find that I often order their burger for lunch, reasonably priced and absolutely flavorful.
May 30 · Yunong ShiI came in to catch up with other friends so we were not in a big rush. The young server was pushy and kept pressing for an order. We ordered from Tthe restaurant week menu. The good- Pinot noir wine- lovely, strawberry burrata- tasty balsamic strawberry with soft mozzarella, pistachio and bread, the chicken schnitzel, crispy hot it had good flavor, and the butter toffee cake- sweet but not overbearing. The Bad- the calamari- portioned like pretzel sticks lack flavor and crispy texture. The bao buns, the salmon- baked or boiled lacked flavor and crisp texture. The burger what happened to the outer char? So soft and mushy. Oh and the food runner was rude- tossed our food on the table without eye contact. We stayed for after dinner cocktails-the espresso martini is good a bit dry in taste but strong coffee flavor.I won’t be back because there is simply so many other better options with friendlier service and better food.
