Introduction / Overview
New York City's dining scene is a world unto itself, and finding a restaurant that feels like a quiet, coastal retreat in the middle of Manhattan is a rare treat. The Otter, a seafood and American restaurant located on Thompson Street, is one of those unique finds. More than just a place to eat, it offers a magical and serene dining experience that feels like an escape from the city's frantic pace. Situated on a tree-lined street and offering a charming outdoor dining area, it brings a fresh, coastal-inspired vibe to the heart of SoHo. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely meal, whether you're a local looking for a new favorite or a tourist seeking a tranquil, high-quality dining experience.

What is worth choosing
When you visit The Otter, the menu offers a range of compelling options, but what truly makes it worth choosing are its specialties and core offerings. The seafood is a definite highlight, with the raw bar being a popular starting point. Customers rave about the freshness of the oysters and the quality of dishes like the "Tuna Tartare" and "Scallop Crudo." The "Simply Prepared" section is where the restaurant's philosophy truly shines, offering dishes like the "Faroe Islands Salmon" and "Whole Spanish Branzino," which are prepared with an emphasis on clean, pure flavors. For a heartier meal, the "Whole Lobster" is a classic choice, and the "Fish & Chips," made with beer-battered Spanish mackerel, is also a highly recommended and satisfying dish.
Beyond the seafood, The Otter’s "American restaurant" side of the menu is equally impressive. The "Double Cheeseburger" with a buttery brioche bun and the "Lobster Roll" with its saffron coleslaw are both standouts that have earned high praise. For those looking for something a bit different, the "Parsley Root Agnolotti with Buttered Crab Meat" is a unique and creative dish that showcases the chef's expertise. The drink menu is also a must-explore, with a great wine list and cocktails that are creative and perfectly executed. As one review noted, the drinks are where the restaurant truly shines, offering innovative takes on classics. The fact that the restaurant offers a happy hour with specials on drinks and small bites from 3-6 PM daily makes it an excellent choice for an after-work unwind. The combination of excellent food, a fantastic drink program, and a warm, inviting atmosphere makes The Otter a place to visit for a truly memorable dining experience in SoHo.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1First of all thank to their hospitality that we brought us champagne since we’ve been celebrating our anniversary, They started with brioche and 3 different butters which was so delicious! Oysters were so fresh and the main course halibut had such a clean taste and great broth. Clams were so good too. All lovely and the atmosphere is great. They are so friendly too. We ordered ice cream for desert which was extremely sweet that the sweetness sticks in your throat! The whip cream and grapes were not good too, so I’m guessing probably they don’t have pastry chef so eat any food and they are great, save the dessert for later!
March 30 · ShiThe Otter: right in the front yard of The Manner Hotel like a little secret garden—is one of those rare outdoor dining experiences that nails it without trying too hard. On a warm summer evening, the setting is magic: string lights, cozy seating, and a kind of quiet charm that makes you forget you’re in the middle of Manhattan. It has that Euro café vibe without the jet lag.The menu itself is surprisingly simple—no gimmicks, no twelve-word descriptions—but every single thing we ordered was on point. Perfectly crisp fries, a standout burger with a buttery brioche bun, and a grilled peach salad that hit that sweet-savory balance just right. It’s not the kind of place you go to be dazzled by molecular foam; it’s where you go to actually enjoy your meal and your company. The service was warm, present, and not remotely pushy. They let you linger, which I appreciate—especially when the evening air is just right. Add in the fact that you can drift right back up to your chic little room at The Manner after dinner, and it’s a full-circle win.In a city where “outdoor dining” often means a plywood box on the street, The Otter is a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. Five stars.
August 01 · Paul Mark MorrisThe atmosphere here is, I think, the point. It's incredibly sexy and quite unique-nautical with a 50s feel. Think lacquered navy walls, white wood-paneled ceilings, curved banquettes, wicker bar stools, marble accents, and a striking, Gauguin-ish mural wrapping around the back corners. The food is very good, although certainly nothing out of this world: inventive but reliably good dishes. And they source perfectly crisp lettuce (which is frustratingly rare).Despite the Otter's tremendous charm it's a bit empty! I suppose that's one of the perils of being a hotel restaurant.
August 14 · Elijah H-RWe had a great brunch here- got a deal on Pulsd but will go back for sure. The lump crab salad was perfectly composed and refreshing on a hot day. The scrambled eggs with roe was decadent and delicious. And the patio was a lovely place to sit, surprisingly quiet and comfortable considering it was August.
August 14 · Caroline OliverI was staying at The Manner Soho and had dinner at The Otter several times. Each night was exceptional. The martinis were perfectly mixed, the fideo clams were a standout, and the NY strip served on a hot plate was simply unforgettable. Warm, elegant atmosphere and top-notch service. I’ll definitely come back.
