Japanese restaurant ★4.0 (50)·$30–50

One of my favorite spots for sushi if I want to splurge a bit for a special occasion but not break the bank. I like the sashimi no shellfish platter, and their yellowtail carpaccio (I forget the exact name on the menu) has tiny portions but is so good. I enjoy the house salad and the green tea as well, it compliments the meal. - Kai Liana

Yama Introduce

For decades, Yama has been a fixture in New York City's vibrant dining scene, serving as a go-to destination for Japanese cuisine since its founding in 1988. Located in a quaint brownstone near Union Square, this Japanese restaurant has earned a loyal following for its commitment to both quality and generous portions. It presents a unique dining experience that balances traditional Japanese flavors with a distinct New York sensibility. The atmosphere is casual and cozy, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed dinner or a quick bite after a long day. Whether you're a sushi connoisseur or simply in the mood for classic Japanese comfort food, Yama offers a menu that caters to a wide variety of tastes.

Yama is particularly known for its "long sushi," a feature that has become a point of distinction. These pieces are notable for their size, offering a substantial amount of fresh fish per serving. While some might find this a stylistic choice that doesn't necessarily translate to a better value, others appreciate the unique experience and the generous amount of fresh ingredients. Beyond the sushi, the restaurant also provides an extensive menu of kitchen entrees, including tempura, teriyaki, and udon, ensuring that patrons who may not be in the mood for raw fish still have plenty of excellent options. The variety and depth of the menu, from classic rolls to specialty dishes, are a significant part of what makes Yama a staple in the neighborhood.

As a women-owned and Asian-owned business, Yama contributes to the diverse and inclusive fabric of New York City’s culinary landscape. This identity, combined with its long history, gives the restaurant a strong sense of character and community. The focus on fresh ingredients and healthy options, paired with a selection of alcoholic beverages like beer and wine, makes it a well-rounded choice for a memorable meal. The presence of outdoor seating is also a welcome feature, allowing patrons to enjoy their meal in the fresh air when the weather permits, a highly sought-after amenity in the city.

Yama is located at 122 E 17th St, New York, NY 10003, USA, in the charming and bustling Union Square area. This location places it just off the park, making it a convenient stop for locals and tourists alike who are exploring the area's shops, markets, and attractions. The restaurant is easily accessible by public transportation, with the major Union Square subway station (serving the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W lines) just a short walk away. This proximity to a central transit hub means that getting to Yama from almost anywhere in the city is a straightforward and easy process.

While the restaurant’s provided information does not explicitly state its accessibility features, its location in a well-established urban neighborhood suggests it is well-integrated with the city's public infrastructure. The availability of outdoor seating also means that patrons with dogs can bring their pets to enjoy a meal, which is a rare and welcome feature in New York City dining. The fact that the restaurant has been in business for so long in this location is a testament to its accessibility and convenience for a wide range of customers.

When choosing what to order at Yama, the standout feature is undeniably the **sushi and sashimi**. The restaurant's reputation for its generous portions, often referred to as "long sushi," is a defining characteristic. The **Sashimi - No Shellfish** platter is a popular choice for those with dietary preferences, and the **yellowtail carpaccio**, praised by a customer for being "so good," is another highlight, though the specific menu name might vary. For those who enjoy a classic, the **Tuna Roll** and **Spicy Tuna Roll** are consistently popular. The menu also features a variety of other rolls, from the standard to the more creative, like the **Crispy Shrimpy Roll** or the **Lobster Tempura Roll**.

Beyond the raw fish, the kitchen entrees are also worth considering. The **Chicken Karaage** and **Pork Gyoza** are excellent appetizer choices. For a main course, the **Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura** or the **Salmon Teriyaki** offer a taste of classic Japanese cooking. The unique **Soba Salad** with shrimp and asparagus provides a healthy and delicious alternative. While some reviews mention mixed experiences with service and the quality of some dishes, the overall sentiment points to a place that, for many, offers a solid, high-quality, and reliable Japanese meal that is well-suited for a special occasion that won't "break the bank." The pleasant house salad and green tea, noted by a customer, also add to the dining experience, making Yama a recommended spot for anyone in the Union Square area looking for fresh and filling Japanese food.
