Sometimes you just want something warm, filling, and easy and Yang Guo Fu Malatang in Flushing hits the spot. I came in just planning to try a little, but (as always) I got carried away. It’s a self-serve setup: grab a bowl, pick out your ingredients, choose a broth, and they cook it for you on the spot. You pay by weight, and at $10.99 per pound, things can add up quick. Mine came out to just over 2 lbs… so yeah, I went a little overboard.I filled my bowl with all the usual suspects: napa cabbage, fatty beef, lamb slices, mini sausages, fish tofu, egg tofu, quail eggs, konjac noodles, and a few chunks of Spam. If you’ve ever had malatang, you know it’s all about texture some chewy, some melty, some crisp and this combo really hit all the marks.Malatang (麻辣烫) is a street food favorite from Sichuan, known for its spicy, numbing flavors. It started out with vendors serving skewered ingredients in communal pots of broth, and evolved into this more modern, customizable version. Yang Guo Fu is actually one of the biggest malatang chains in China, so it’s kind of cool to see it pop up in NYC.I tried two broths: the Classic Herbal Beef Bone Broth and the Sweet & Sour Tomato Broth. The beef broth had a mild kick not super spicy, even with my high spice tolerance but still warm and cozy. I didn’t taste much of the herbal notes, though. The tomato broth was sweeter and more tangy, but honestly had a slightly artificial vibe. Not bad, just not super rich or layered. What made up for the average broths was the sheer fun of choosing exactly what I wanted and everything was fresh and cooked well. As a bonus, they serve a tiny bowl of 冰粉 (bing fen) at the end, a cooling jelly dessert from Sichuan made with sweet potato starch, topped with dried fruit, brown sugar syrup, and nuts. It’s light, sweet, and a nice contrast to the heat of the soup.Overall, it’s not the most unforgettable meal I’ve had, but it’s definitely a fun and satisfying option if you’re in Flushing and want something comforting without the fuss. Just be careful at the ingredient bar it’s way too easy to go overboard. - Kimberly Lim Legaspi
