Zul Cafe and Grill Introduce
For Connecticut residents searching for a truly authentic, home-style culinary experience, Zul Cafe and Grill in Norwalk is a premier destination for traditional Filipino comfort food. Birthed from a simple desire by Norwalk residents Rob and Gladys Luz to bring the flavors of their culture closer to home, Zul Cafe and Grill fills a vital void in lower Fairfield County's dining scene. This establishment is more than just a restaurant; it’s widely described by patrons as feeling like a "warm Filipino hug," offering dishes crafted with family traditions and secret ingredients that are intended to make every bite feel like home.
The menu at Zul Cafe and Grill is a celebration of classic Filipino dishes, prepared with careful attention and using genuine flavors. They specialize in serving Pinoy Comfort Food At Its Best, covering all the favorites from traditional morning meals to savory dinner entrées and popular desserts. Their philosophy emphasizes quality and freshness, noting that everything is prepared fresh and never frozen. This commitment to fresh ingredients means that some dishes may take a little longer to prepare—up to 20-30 minutes for certain items—a minor wait that is well worth it for the made-from-scratch taste.
The culinary stars of the menu are found under "Zul’s Favorites" and "Grilled Specials." Dishes like Pork Lechon Sisig (crispy pork belly with onion and pepper), Lechon Kawali (deep-fried crispy pork belly), and various Adobo preparations are consistent crowd-pleasers. For those who enjoy breakfast staples at any time of day, the 'silog' combos, such as the Beef Tapa & Tocino combination, are excellent choices, often accompanied by the highly recommended upgrade to savory Garlic Rice. Customer reviews frequently call out the Lechon Sisig and Tocilog as "A MUST TRY!!," reflecting the authentic and satisfying flavors.
While the food is consistently praised for its authenticity and quality, the unique structure of the Norwalk location—which is described by one customer as literally "someone’s house that’s been converted into a restaurant"—creates a distinct, Casual and Cozy atmosphere. While this setting contributes to the warm, homey vibe, it leads to a service style that is heavily geared toward Takeout and Delivery. Dine-in service, while available, may be an "afterthought" for some, with food occasionally delivered in takeout trays and served with plastic utensils. However, the friendliness of the owners and staff consistently shines through, enhancing the welcoming, family-friendly experience.
The menu also features beloved Filipino appetizers like Lumpiang Shanghai (deep fried spring roll with pork), satisfying noodle dishes like Palabok and Pancit Bihon, and classic vegetable favorites such as Sitaw & Kalabasa (Sautéed String Beans & Pumpkin in Coconut Milk). To finish the meal, the colorful, icy party in a cup known as Halo-Halo, a Filipino classic dessert, comes highly recommended, along with Taho (soft tofu pudding with caramel) and Turon (deep-fried banana and brown sugar spring roll).

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Zul is the kind of place that feels like a warm Filipino hug.Tried the sitaw and kalabasa, homey, comforting dish that tasted like it came straight out of a Lola’s kitchen .Paired it with lechon kawali, I love the lechon sisig and tosilog. ITS A MUST TRY!!TIP Upgrade your rice to garlic rice. Trust me, plain rice is nice, but garlic rice is the main . The Palabok was ok but maybe ask for extra sauce it was a little bit dry but overall the flavour was authentic.Finished strong with the halo-halo—highly recommend adding one to your order. I’d maybe go lighter on the beans next time (unless you’re pro-legume), but overall, it's a colorful, icy party in a cup.Zul. Highly recommend !
September 24 · MN CThis was my second visit and for our first time here would have rated this place 5/5. Maybe we visited on an off day but I didn’t enjoy our experience as much the second time around. Came in with my kids, ordered three boba teas (one strawberry and one taro and passion fruit black tea)…my kid’s strawberry milk tea wasn’t sweet at all, my passion fruit tea was too sweet to the point that I couldn’t drink it). They do have a nice selection of Filipino snacks, tried the shrimp chips and the crispy fried chicken skins, both of which were delicious. Ordered the grilled shrimp with rice for my kids to share and the pancit Bihon for me. My order took 40Minutes, by the time it was ready my kids had finished eating and were ready to go and I had already had some of my kids’ shrimp and rice (which was delicious and quick to arrive) so I ended up taking it to go/ not eating it. The restaurant is literally someone’s house that’s been converted into a restaurant, so you come in order downstairs and then head upstairs and your food is delivered to your table. It is delivered in takeout trays and they bring you foam plates and plastic utensils. We were the only people eating in on Friday around 12:30 but the restaurant seemed to be busy with takeout orders. I thought the food was good, but the service was just ok and the drinks were a miss. I wish someone communicated that it would take 40 minutes for my dish because I would just have ordered something else from the menu in that case. I feel like I wasted $70 on a lunch and ended up sharing a few pieces of shrimp with my kids, not ideal! I would visit again because I think the food is good but probably just get takeout!
May 24 · Laura B.Fantastic! Haven’t had lumpia in over 6 years since I lived in San Diego. Best I’ve ever had. Also had pork lechon sisig delicious. Can’t wait to try their other dishes and specials
January 09 · Evan WickstromIt was fun to try a new cuisine! The food came out very quickly and it was delicious! The appetizer had lots of flavor and complexity, while the main dish was much more simple but still good and part of the experience. I definitely recommend and will be back
August 10 · NateAuthentic Filipino foods at its best. Serene atmosphere. Nice-smelling and clean restroom. Prompt and friendly service. Highly recommended if you’re craving for delicious Pinoy foods. My favorite? The grilled pork belly and eggplant tofu sisig! Will come back very soon!
