Bitter Monk Introduce
Nestled within the vibrant, sprawling complex of Industry City in Sunset Park, **Bitter Monk** stands out as a unique and intimate destination for New York cocktail enthusiasts. More than just a bar, it operates as the official tasting room for its micro-distillery and spirits brand, **ATHERAS SPIRITS**. It's the Brooklyn sibling to the critically acclaimed Sugar Monk in Harlem, bringing a similar seductive, artful, and elevated approach to mixology down to the waterfront.
Bitter Monk focuses intensely on crafting cocktails that highlight their own **house-made Amari, herbal liqueurs, and bitters**. Their signature style involves incorporating a fascinating array of herbs, spices, wild plants, roots, fruits, and flowers, many of which are foraged, creating multi-layered, inventive, and exquisite drinks that guests consistently praise. Reviewers frequently describe the experience as watching an artist at work, noting that the drinks, particularly the clarified cocktail selections like the 'Ugetsu' and 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,' are perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious. This dedication to the craft and house-made ingredients sets Bitter Monk apart in the competitive NYC bar scene.
The ambiance is key to the experience. Designed with a distinct 'ecclesiastic' feeling, the space is **Casual, Cozy, and Trendy**, featuring dim golden lighting, soft leather seating, and a stunning stained-glass window that casts beautiful light patterns—a nod to the long history of distillation often associated with monks. It’s an ideal setting for **Groups** looking for a unique evening, and a proudly **LGBTQ+ friendly** and **Transgender safespace**, welcoming all members of the diverse Brooklyn community. With a focus on **Fast service** and expert knowledge from the staff, Bitter Monk provides an unpretentious yet sophisticated cocktail journey.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We had an incredible experience at Bitter Monk. The bartender who served us (his name was Ryan) was outstanding. He was friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about his craft. Watching him create the “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” cocktail was like watching an artist at work. The drink itself was perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious. You can really tell they put thought and creativity into every detail. We had such a great time and will definitely be coming back for more. Highly recommend!
July 01 · Breanne GarrisonAmazing experience that lives up to the Sugar Monk lineage! Inventive cocktails with an especially exquisite clarified cocktail selection. Ugetsu and the Between the Devil et the Deep Blue Sea are highlights! Will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu. Food is also thoughtfully executed! Kudos to the staff!
May 12 · OmiGreat new spot in Industry City. Secluded and feels so very special, with seating for only 15 or so people. The drinks are wonderful; I had a spectacular smoked drink among other selections my first visit. Clearly crafted with skill and good taste. Highly recommended!
April 16 · Eric BThis place is amazing! It is the most peaceful cocktail bar/distillery in Industry City and it's absolutely beautiful as well.Service was knowledgeable, friendly and just overall incredible.Only thing better than the atmosphere and service were the cocktails and their house made amaris and herbal liqueurs. If you visit and it is slow enough that they are offering the tastings of the amaris, liqueurs and bitters make sure you do it.
May 12 · Seth MellinSister bar of Sugar Monk, Harlem’s finest. It’s hiding in the factory style building at Industry City among few other bars and distilleries. The bar has its own tasting room and amaro distillery. The drinks are amazing given their specialty in bitters and amaros.
